""Warband Shuts Down Computer
« on: February 18, 2011, 07:43:55 AM »
Greetings!

The other day I was in a game and did a save and exit.  Relaunched Warband literally 5 minutes later and clicked to load the game my computer shut down immediately.  Not a graceful shut down or BSOD, immediate power off to where I actually had to push the power button to start it back up.  The same behavior occurs when I click "Start New Game."

I've loaded several other games and run video benchmarks on my system and there have been no crashing issues.  I'm running the latest patch of Warband and I have the latest video card drivers as well.  I've also tried an uninstall/reinstall of Warband.
Any assistance would be appreciated and if any additional information is required I'd be happy to provide whatever I can."

this description fits also my technical problem , its something really similiar

maybe anyone got some crashes like that or know some possible way to resolve it ...  ???

First of all, for these kind of problems, we need to know the intimate details on the hardware in your computer, until then, it's hard to suggest things to help you. Also, a link to the other thread which reported the same problem would be helpful. Also, does your PC power off when running Native?

I don't claim to know a lot about computers, but in order for any more help beyond "update your drivers and reinstall the game," you need to post your PC specs.

I used to have this issue with Warband when playing it for sustained periods, and it turned out that the stock cooler on my graphics card was a POS. I'f overheat, and it'd shut down. Often when I re-launched it'd shut down pretty quickly too. Do you have any temperature or voltage monitoring programs installed to check these things out when Warband is running and while idle?

Indeed.

Get a heat-monitoring software, there are many good free ones.

Check what your stock temperatures are, play for a good ten minutes and check it again.

Also, give specs, to speed things up.

This could be a lot of things imo, I can't tell what, especially from so little detail.
I had fps-problems once, but that was a loose cooler that wandered off a bit when I carried my PC box to a friend's house.

I had no idea why the game was stuck at 2-5 fps with 20 NPC-s on the battlefield,  :)

Turned out that the CPU cooler came off loose. It was so hot that you could probably make an omlet on it.

lol.

Try monitoring your temperatures and see what you get on idle and load/in-game. The stock coolers on Geforce cards are pretty puny (I know my 9800gt was terrible), and the 8600 one doesn't look very effective. I use EVGA Precision which is also a simple overclocking tool, try that or CPUID Hardware Monitor (which is nice because it also shows temperatures outside of your GPU).

http://www.evga.com/precision/

http://www.cpuid.com/softwares/hwmonitor.html (download on the left, not top left fyi).

Can't go anywhere without temperatures, both idle, and under load.

Specs should be fine.

A component overheating is certainly one possible (and most likely) cause that comes to mind (and has been suggested to troubleshoot).

The other thing that comes to mind is your power supply may be just a little too weak.  Typically in my experience a power supply that isn't strong enough for the components will just prevent the computer from turning on. But I suppose in theory if the power supply was enough to power on the devices, but once your graphics card starts being maxed out it will be using more power than when it's idle.  So in theory if your power supply wasn't quite powerful enough it might turn off after being pushed over the limit.

Can you tell me what your power supply wattage is?  I'm leaning towards a component heating up past the threshold and it shuts off your system, this is most likely the processor, not the graphics card heating up to this point (if it was the graphics card it would probably just turn your display off, but the computer would still stay on).  Try downloading some monitoring tools to monitor the processor's temperature, also you could check the heatsink/fan that's on the processor and verify it has a good seal (or maybe re-apply some thermal paste to the heatsink/processor).

yeah duh, i suppose I could have given the guy the first and easiest step you should always take when troubleshooting overheating...

Bodhiman - glad you found/fixed the problem.
