Here's what my town looked like today.

Today I spent the afternoon speaking to the matriarchs of either side of my parentage in an effort to track down my heritage. What I can say for sure:

50% unknown/unverified
25% Italian
12.5% Finnish
6.25% German
6.25% English

25% of the unknown is completely unknown (nobody knows where/when my maternal grandfather was born, apparently- though the surname Jorgensen is of course Danish-Norwegian), and the other 25% is a lineage containing the surnames Fry, Smith, and Merrill (which is an old Norman name in origin), so I'm leaning towards assuming at least some of that is English in origin, with some probable French/Irish ties, though we were unable to pin down a clear immigrant ancestor. I'm hoping that the really unknown 25% is actually like, I don't know, something cool like Bear or Moose. Yeah! But more probably it's straight up honky homeland English or Danish-Norwegian.

Fun fact: Every single one of my female ancestors from Cornwall, England are referred to as, "a spinster" hahahaha

I'm 50% irish, 25% scottish and 25% norwegian. 

But I always wondered if there was the possibility I was 100% norwegian.  Since norwegians settled in Scotland, and Ireland, and scottish folks also settled in Ireland as well.  So maybe I'm not "irish" at all.  But at what point do you no longer count where ancestors came from?  My mother's side has been in America since the 1840s (coming from Ireland, How long were they in Ireland for)?     Were they originally part of the English mainland, and got pushed to Ireland in the 11th century?  Would that make me partially English?  So if I move to Australia, would my kids consider "American" as part of their ancestry now?

Geneology always seemed so perplexing to me because of all these possible anomalies.  And aren't we all able to trace our roots back to Africa or Mesopotamia if we go far enough back?

It seems possible if not probable, definitely, and beyond that we can trace our roots back to lower mammals, pre-mammalian reptiles, some damn fish, flatworms, sea sponges, amoebas, and some prokaryote bacteria, probably. I want to shake that single cells non-existing hand for the fine mess they've made.
