Truly it is the middle of the country that is superior.

I have to visit illinois once a year for the inlaws, it is a truly harrowing and terrifying experience. The midwest has its merits: Flat featureless plains make it hard to stub your toes, mindnumbingly harsh winters and ten foot snowdrifts make it easy to make snow-cones.  But there is also the bad side: Batshit crazy repressed fearful christian conservative right wing bible thumping tea-party neocon freaks, and a insidious pervasive bro culture of popped collar polo shirts and conformity.

I get off the plane home, drop to my knees, and kiss the filthy airport carpet, thankful to be an Oregonian.

Then I thought about it and started crying. I remember one time I saw a news reporter in the mid-west talk about a flooding and the resulting severe damages and deaths. He then proceeded to explain why the victims had the catastrophe coming and how it was all their fault, because it happened in an atheist community and god needed to punish them for not believing in him.

I'm from Orange county California. We moved to Arizona since I was about six so that my mother could be closer to her border hopping family members. I envy you for having been able to live life over seas and back.
