Nation specific political stuff should go in the off topic section.

Nation specific?

LOL

This will affect everyone.

Today, it's US law. Tomorrow it's UK law, day after that it's EU law...

it's more than just a "lol stop piracy" act..

Of course it's not just stop piracy thing...

For those who don't believe it, I won't go into details trying to explain why. I'll just say that Microsoft is against this law so therefore it can't just be "stop piracy" act.

Yeah with Obama's "hopey-changey" logo in front.  Fuck him, he's a corporate whore.

The left looks too right.

BTW, was going to call my rep, but this was on his website:

“I am not a co-sponsor of this bill, and do not support the legislation because it fails to maintain the freedom of expression provided by the Constitution and infringes on our liberties".

So at least he has his priorities straight here.

btw there's a website, sopaopera.org (or something like that...google it) which shows who's for and who's against the bill.  Dem's and republicans are basically split down the middle in both parties (i.e. half dem's are for/against, half republicans are for/against).  Pretty obvious to see who is a corporate whore, and who isn't.  It's also easy to tell who is up to date on their facts, and who isn't.

Quote from: Google
Members of Congress are trying to do the right thing by going after pirates and counterfeiters but SOPA and PIPA are the wrong way to do it.

1. SOPA and PIPA would censor the Web

The U.S. government could order the blocking of sites using methods similar to those employed by China. Among other things, search engines could be forced to delete entire websites from their search results. That’s why 41 human rights organizations  and 110 prominent law professors  have expressed grave concerns about the bills.

2. SOPA and PIPA would be job-killers because they would create a new era of uncertainty for American business

Law-abiding U.S. internet companies would have to monitor everything users link to or upload or face the risk of time-consuming litigation. That’s why AOL, EBay, Facebook, Google, LinkedIn, Mozilla, Twitter, Yahoo and Zynga  wrote a letter to Congress saying these bills “pose a serious risk to our industry’s continued track record of innovation and job-creation.” It’s also why 55 of America’s most successful venture capitalists  expressed concern that PIPA “would stifle investment in Internet services, throttle innovation, and hurt American competitiveness”. More than 204 entrepreneurs  told Congress that PIPA and SOPA would “hurt economic growth and chill innovation”.

3. SOPA and PIPA wouldn’t stop piracy

To make matters worse, SOPA and PIPA won’t even work. The censorship regulations written into these bills won’t shut down pirate sites. These sites will just change their addresses and continue their criminal activities, while law-abiding companies will suffer high penalties for breaches they can’t possibly control.

There are effective ways to combat foreign “rogue” websites dedicated to copyright infringement and trademark counterfeiting, while preserving the innovation and dynamism that have made the Internet such an important driver of American economic growth and job creation. Congress should consider alternatives like the OPEN Act , which takes targeted and focused steps to cut off the money supply from foreign pirate sites without making US companies censor the Web.

It is more republicans than democrats pushing this bill, and the ones fighting against it in the senate are Democrats.

So blaming this on Obama in any way is pure propaganda (and I'm no fan of him since he appointed the same wall street crooks as Bush had), then on top adding the cute puppy, laugh. Big thumbs down.

Even though this is ULTRA creepy, I don't think the US government would ever shut down any big US website. How much tax money does Facebook pays ? Now you understand that actually using this legislation against US business (which have, obviously, US websites), is like shooting yourself in the foot for the US government. But of course this isn't a reason to accept such a ridiculous law. It is basically infringing like the whole constitution, especially with the privacy and the innocence presumption parts. And even though a court would never shut down big, mainstream sites like youtube, it could shut down more subversive ones, heavily threatening freedom of speech.

If the law ever passes, the first thing I expect is a sudden increase in server uptime price outside of the US. What makes a website "american" ? The servers or the company ? Either way, goodbye american internet startups, hello to all the clones from around the world. And what if they ban the DNS entries for all those "rogue" sites ? Lol... that's what Lybia did. Not long before the old man was killed.

Nation specific political stuff should go in the off topic section.

its not nation specific.
if the law passes they can take google down on account of it linking to copyright material.

this is not a matter of IP blocking the US which you can bypass with a proxy. The site will be taken down 1st, and then the owner has to appeal in court. So everyone will be affected.

infact one of the people that supports SOPA. (Rupert Murdoch) called Google "a piracy leader"

and if you dont know anything about this man then you better look him up.

sopa= no google= no internet

Internet without google could work. It's only the web that is heavily relying on it afterall. But the web is nearly everything internet-related.

The web without DNS to the known american websites, and things get much more complicated. At least for the poor sobs that can't reach other DNS servers. Lol, imagine some "underground" people selling books with possible IP adresses of DNS-forbidden websites.

But anyway, really closing a website is that, closing it. Forcing the ISP to end the contract and don't give IP adresses to the servers. Nothing to do with DNS.
