Let's have it. We hear it often from new players. Is it worth for me to retire?

Under which circumstances would you recommend a new player to retire, and wouldn't you?


My opinion:
I wouldn't do it if I was gen 1 unless you want to respec and know you are going to play a lot.

For those poor souls that like the gameplay types that aren't encouraged by this mod at all (heavy armor and cavalry mainly), retiring is a forced choice, in order to get enough money.


Retiring also helps staying flexible when your build and/or heirlooms are screwed up by a patch.

Simple: Retire untill you feel your gear is loomed enough.

If you dont want looms at all, retire once in a while if you want to try out a different playstyle.

The only real benefit you get are the looms, so if you don't care for looms, don't retire, easy as that. If I had never retired, I would be more than half way to level 35 now, I think. I now have 5 MW items, which isn't bad either. And I won't retire anymore.

I see retiring kind of like prestige mode in call of duty.

The leveling system is what makes me play so much to be honest.

I would also suggest trying many different builds. Playing other classes helps you understand how to defeat them once you find your preferred play style.

For example, while playing Cav I understood better how to avoid Cav charges by seeing how some experience players reacted to my mounted attacks. Retiring also gives you the opportunity to tweak your build and improve it after each generation. It also hurts less to respec: if your build is broken for any reason (patch nerf, bad decision or else) and you're level 35...imagine to shitload of lost XP.

Looms and leveling up are also great for the gold income. After first gen, I made a lot of money just wearing crappy gear for the first 20 levels.

I'm gen...something...and I plan on retiring until I've loomed my heavy lance. My horse is already fully loomed. Once you've got the heirloomed items you desire, there isn't much point in retiring anymore. By then you'll have a decent xp/gold bonus, and will be sick of the 1-30 grind.

There is no such thing as a +gold bonus. The xp bonus only improves your retirement rate, which is pointless if you don't care about looms. In theory, it could also improve your overall leveling bonus, but 3% is not enough. Also, max XP you can get per minute is capped, which means you won't ever catch up in level with someone who doesn't retire.

It's really only about the shiny looms.

In my opinion retiring is only worth it until you get your desired mw weapon that you use alot. I'm always thinking that I won't be retiring but then I do it anyway because I get the sense of native once you're not leveling anymore. Just a thought.

If you're going to play this game a LOT, retire away.  If just playing casually, it might be to your best interests to just stay at level 30/31.

Retire because you enjoy leveling up, i'd say. Don't do it for the 'looms, they aren't worth it if you hate being <30.
I made an alt for every build i like (2h, pole guy, archer, STF HA), so i can switch to those anytime i like. Quite a luxury, i think. When a cav map comes on, i switch to my main 1h cav guy or do a few rounds as HA...  when a cramped infantry map comes on,  i bring out my 2h guy or pole guy or my archer.

I would recommend making 1 main character and start with one or two alts. If you are a casual player, i would recommend not retiring and making a few alts instead.

In short: make main -> level to 30 -> make alt -> make alt -> make alt -> reach level 25+ with alts -> consider retiring main.

Something like that anyway... but just do whatever you like!

i'm gen 19, with the armor heirloom bonus nerf, being 35 with a couple of purchased heirlooms is WAY better.
