Yes we wanted to pay upkeep so the soldiers can feed their families.

We at the Fallen Brigade are proud of our very good care of mercanaries. If they die on the field their corpses will get send back to their home villages for a proper funeral. Since this is costly, as an alternative we offer a years pay to the widow. No corpses have ever been returned from the battlefield.

But that is a hilarious choice of wording considering what position of the steppe your only fief is in.

Actually, the whole idea that using a large number of troops to attack when a smaller number could have sufficed doesn't really mean anything. It's obvious laziness and pretty much every clan would do the same unless they were significantly financially responsible
