Why won't the damn village hire me?

Why do villages not hire immediately? I sign up for zero gold and it takes forever for me to get hired

they hire every hour on the hour. they really need to do a last hire 10 min before a battle though :X

They will actually hire on the hour during the battle as well. e.g. If the battle starts at 7:50, the village may still hire you at 8:00 even though the battle has already begun.
