It's altered here.

It won't protect you from melee attacks, or ranged attacks.

The shield will absorb 50% ranged damage, though, when you get shot in the back.

Pretty sure there's also a huge weight/speed penalty for having a second shield on your back.

stop making stuff up. and this is the wrong forum to be asking general info about the game.  this belongs in beginners guides

shield armor is added to your body armor when you are hit in the back by ranged

stop making stuff up.

Oh sorry mister.

This was the information I knew about the subject.

I didn't make this up, this was widely accepted information.

Diggles is rude but right.

The shield on your back just adds 50% of his armor value when you are hit in the body from behind you (not the head nor legs). It will never break because it doesn't get damaged that way.

Yes it is. A shield still slows you down when sheathed (on your back). You may also note that bucklers don't protect when they are sheathed as they are shown on the side. Or it's bugged (I doubt this would be called a feature).

yes there is a speed penalty for having a shield, putting on your back doesnt lower or negate it.  speed penalty is something like 10-20% movement speed penalty or if I had to guess it multiples the weight of the shield by 2,3 or 4'ish?

Oberyn was talking about having a second shield on the back. As far as I know there is an additional penalty for having 2 shields with you, more than would be the case if you used the same amount of weight in weapons.

I don't know the exact values, but my best rule of thumb is that having two shields is only viable if you are on horse, use a light shield then when you get dehorsed you drop it and take the heavy shield on your back, just like Phazh used to do (I don't know if he still plays like that). Having two shields on foot is more or less suicide, at least in battle mode.

yup, as in the total weight for both shields is more than just the addition of both. Man we really need to get someone to document this shit, if I hadn't seen most of it develop from early on I'd be totally surprised when someone tells me these seemingly random rules. Must suck for new players.

Ssh, spreading my secrets around like it's common knowledge. Thankfully you didn't blab about my ninja 'sheathe sword - drop shield - unsheathe sword - select secondary shield from back' trick when my horse goes down.

Oh drat.

Never use a second shield on back on foot. It slows you down too much. But on a horse, it's viable, although a bit useless. I like it and i'll keep doing it, possibly because the 'sheath sword - drop shield' is a reflex i do every time my horse dies, even when i don't have the second shield on me...

Actually that sounds like the first thing I would turn into a macro if I had to do it.
