My best tip from running a lot of clans on different games are:
1. Find people you like (the most important) having a close knit group that accepts new people is far more important than getting skilled players with egos. This builds the most important factor: FUN! If you have fun together you will stay together, I still regularly play different games with individuals from different clans I've been in through the time I've played games.
2. Allow active and less active members. Some people have lives, others play different games. Forcing a superactive clan can lose you good members just because they have other commitments.
3. Not having egomaniac leaders. I've been in clans where the leader actually thinks he is some kind of legend. Allow everyone some input into the team. THE VERY BEST teams I have been in have had an equal power structure but with certain members with more time available doing the admin / reminding, sometimes you do find that one person with the charisma and interpersonal skills to be a source of moral, but that is rare, and no one likes an ego on a power trip.
