Kind of expected that myself since its the first movie. They're just setting the stage with it so everyone knows who everyone is and some of their background along with whats currently happening in middle earth. Same with the first LOTR.

^ This. It's a standard formula for trilogies. Star Wars Original Trilogy did it, too. First introduces characters and establishes setting and things can get rolling after that. God, Empire Strikes Back was so damn good.

Not surprised since return of the king was really bad. Plus I can't believe these guys broke it into 3 movies it's a 200 page book lol, that would be like 60$ to watch all 3 in theatres fuck that shakedown. I re-read the hobbit easily over 2 days on vacation.
