Kajia, I really like your first picture. As you said it's calm, but lots of maps consists of waiting before that initial clash.
Thomek suggested more arrows dropping in, which would make the scene more dramatic. For good and bad I guess. I think not showing the enemy is a clever move nonetheless.
To convey all the different aspects of cRPG, rather then having a regular shieldwall you could have lots of different fighters in the scene (weeaboos, ninjas what not), and place them in the and around the shieldwall (basically what you have done but mix up up with different kinds of characters).
Regardless, I hope you enter cause I can't wait to see the finished result!
