Like Spinal Tap it started out only as a joke band for the cartoon, but due to popularity has actually written and recorded 2 (3 now?) albums and goes on tour as a real band.  In the cartoon, it's pretty much 1 main guy that does all the writing and recording of the musical material as well as the voices of the main characters.

And yes the Dethklok albums are actually fucking good.
