Ugh. The people I grew up around in Missouri would have said something like this.
From my experience in the pseudo-South, this is attributed to a lot of rural/suburban stubbornness, and a lack of culture. Completely.
That's not to say everyone is like this, but throughout highschool, being a disgruntled racist was totally acceptable.
The town I grew up in was something like 98% white, so I can understand how this happens.
