Hitting faster?

So other then the speed rating on the weapons, what els determens the speed of the weapons, it just seems that who ever I meet can hit much faster then me even with huge two handers.

Is it weapon skill or atheltics that does it, or both?

It's the weapon proficiency (WPF). The more, the faster you will swing. Athletics only helps your attacks with speed bonus (attacking while moving in the same direction).

Weapon speed and knowing how the animations work.
Weapon skill adds some for the speed too, but thats not the main reason someone hits faster than you.
Left side swing is the fastest hit and overhead slowest via animations.

you can play with unloomed weapon too and be good. Loomed weapon gives you one pont in speed of weapon, and 3 points in dmg. Not a big difference.
Armors are different story, that shit gives you longer life. You can always loot loomed weapons in battlefield untill you grind some gold or generations.
I am gen 6 and i have 2 mw items. looms are reward for those who play longer this mod.

wpf effects the speed of the attack, which overall creates the ability to get more swings in....however this difference is minimal, i think waltf4 said it was like ~0.64% increase in speed from a STR build with low wpf to a AGI build with high wpf....so....

other than that just take a fast weapon, get it loomed, learn the different swing animations and their reach/timing and how they lead from one to another (stab is slow and gets you "stuck" in it sometimes)

Athletics does make quite a difference I think if you turn through your swings, it will make them connect faster and do more dmg.

It's mostly the player facing you.

Any decent player needs to be good with sweetspots, footwork and timing. Don't look too much into numbers, in this case the speed rating. while it's most definitively noticeable when you're wielding a fast vs a slow weapon a good player can, and will make a slow weapon look "fast" while a shitty player with a fast weapon will still be slow.

That said, EU3 is king. Practice there and you'll find yourself getting better much quicker.

Turn into your swings/stabs, be mindful of you and your opponent's relative positions (and hence the speed). And don't listen to me. I don't know what I'm talking about.

1)Turning into your swings and 2)swinging in the opposite direction your opponent is moving around you do MUCH more to increase the 'speed' of your swings than WPF, speed bonus from heirlooms, etc.

Also, certain swings have delays added to them, such as 1h right swing/thrust, so don't use these when you're trying to hit someone before they hit you. I reserve these attacks for unaware opponents.
