The Swiss militia has assault rifles at home, but no ammunition.
Not anymore. It's ridiculously easy to get ammo, though, if you need it, because you have to do your yearly marksmanship test in civil, and those guys from the shooting clubs handing out the ammunition don't really care if you get a large amount of practice shots and only use a few or none at all. You can also purposely fail your test and get another round of ammo. You can fail and retest all day long, since shooting ranges are usually very crowded on the official test days, so you can just switch lane and do everything over again.
With that said, the rifles are not a big problem in Switzerland. There is the occasional wacko shooting around, but it happens very rarely. Suicides are more frequent.
The reason why we still have the rifles at home is due to the lobbying of the shooting clubs, which would die out very fast if people had to get their gun at an arsenal before going to the shooting range.
