In real battles people would loot for better weapons, and supplies. I think for cRPG perhaps it could be suggested a Loot option 1 time per game but that weapons degrade a 99.9% of the time when dropped. Then increased disrepair for the items would keep newbs from using the high end gear. This would be interested to begin an economy of sorts for people who could pickup broken weapons and sell them back for income.
For Example:
I drop my Katana but is degraded that anyone who picks it up would have to pay 99% of it to use it unless the .01 check rolls on the item when dropped and it is fine. The person would pick it up and place it in their inventory if they meet the requirements for the item to be picked up. Then the client would update the cRPG Database of a new item that has been added to the users inventory.
