Looks good!

You're tanky, strong, and a little bit slow (which is fine). A light lance or ashwood pike will give you plenty of reach to make up for your lack of mobility and will help you perform your primary goal, infantry support.

(More on infantry support here)

Get used to using your defensive NUDGE key to shieldbash enemies away and interrupt their attacks on allies. The hitboxes are a bit wonky until you get the hang of it. You pretty much have to be within kissing range of an enemy at the instant you hit nudge, or you will miss.

Speaking of wonky hitboxes, here's a quick read on the way this game handles long weapons.

As I understand it:

There's an initial "dead space" at the beginning of each attack animation, a split second where the weapon is in motion, but it will automatically glance if it hits anything.

If you're standing right next to somebody, and you jab them straight on, you will hit them with the dead space and automatically glance.

But

If you're standing right next to somebody and you start the attack by stabbing the air next to them, it will hit only empty space during the dead zone (thereby avoiding the glance). After the attack is in motion, and has avoided the deadspin, grab your mouse and swing it to face the other side of your target. The weapon will magically stab them because the animation is now in its "active" phase (eg, not autoglance dead space).

Also you'll get a little damage boost, since this spear wiggling counts towards your speed bonus.

edit: whoops, I misread your original post.

Aim to the right, release attack, suddenly WHOOOOSH mouse over to the left side.

It's the same motion as some cartoonish boxer swinging a wildly exaggerated right hook. You have to pull wayy back (aim to the right) and then follow through (WOOSH to the left). The more exaggerated your pullback and WOOSH is, the closer you can bring the active phase of the animation to your character, and the closer you can facestab people.

Just remember that your weapon MODEL itself has nothing to do with scoring a hit. Focus, instead, on manipulating the invisible hitbox that DOES determine whether or not you hit.

edit2:

I'm bored and worked up a shitty infographic about wigglyspear facestabs for any new players who stumble across this thread.

I hope this helps a bit, good luck!

(Surcoat over mail, Steppe horse, Nomad bow, Tatar arrow, Espada Eslavona, Light Strange helmet, Black leather gloves and eastern lamellar greaves).

Quick suggestion:

Most horse archers don't bother with a melee weapon at all, opting to use the slot for more arrows.

If you prefer to have a melee option, though, I'd recommend replacing the Espada Eslavona with a different sword. It's quite expensive for a backup weapon (535 gold per repair), and isn't really suited for use on horseback (You don't really benefit from it's high thrust attack, and you definitely suffer for its short, weak, slash attacks).

Cheap backup weapon for cavalry use:
The Arabian Straight Sword has greater reach (+10) and greater damage (+2 on slash)  and only costs 148 gold on repair. It's so cheap because it has an absolutely worthless stab attack. BUT, you're on horseback so you don't really care about that.

There are plenty of other weapons in that cost range that would make perfectly serviceable weapons for self defense when dismounted. Pick one that looks cool and go for it! (I used a 4 upkeep club on my archer)

Personally, I find the donkey's unnatural proportions to be a little bit.

As much as everyone likes to bitch about it, the progression is fun. Hitting 15/x or y/12 and feeling like you can contribute when you're low level is pretty fun.

But fresh players should definitely get a boost. I'd like to see new players get a bonus whereby they start at higher levels.

Gen 1, Level 20
Gen 2, Level 15
Gen 3, Level 10
Gen 4, Level 5
Gen 5, 0

Obviously we'd have to tweak the numbers and figure out a way of implementing these buffs without having douchebags exploit them for a marginal leg up on looms.

The only other problem would be the abundance of points causing noobs to do the classic/useless 1h/shielder/archer/horseman noob build.

HA arrows that hit the ground now deal damage to the shooter's horse, to simulate the hazards of firing sharp, pointy objects willy nilly into the field where your horse grazes.

Totally realistic!!11

I'm 12/27 on my alt right now. It's a bit overspecialized IMO.

I'm too much of a noodle-armed schoolgirl for frontline duty, but I'm great at running down smelly archers!

Nothing wrong with having a small collection of 1hers in your inventory which you choose from depending on the enemy class breakdown.

My 12/27 bucklerslut's toolbox consists of a Nordic War Sword, Espada, and Light Axe+Longdagger to let me focus on Archers, 2H/Pole, and Shielders, respectively.

I'm impressed with the longevity of this shitposting marathon, but my heart aches for the deleted picture of Jake Gyllenhaal.
