Title: Best dueling polearm?
Post by: PieParadox on June 20, 2011, 07:37:48 am
What is the best polearms to duel with? The bec?

Are two handers the best dueling weapons or can polearms keep up?

I honestly love the look of the poleaxe and want to use it but I don't want to be disadvantaged in a 1v1 duel...

i hate dueling against it, i cant see it, its fast and deadly with its pierce damage.

a Polearm from Hell

p.s. loved using it

Mostly a matter of personal preference. Just try out all the weapons.

2Hers are cooler in duels. Polearms can and tend to be more powerful, especially the longer ones, such as glaive, LHB and GLB, but 2h are waaaaay cooler for duels, anyway.

I use the regular poleaxe as my main wep, and yes, it is indeed usable in duels. It is abit slow, but makes up for it in reach and pure damage (:hint:stab:hint:). The reach is enough to keep up with the greatswords on the swings, and allows you to outrange the other poleaxes (the Elegant one is pretty common nowadays), and swords without stab (nodachi...). The damage of the weapon is also a very powerful tool for duelling, not just in the sense that you can two-shot almost everything (even tho that is good ), but in the sense that it allows you to strike at odd angles without glancing. If you aim for their feet (less armor, also rarely will you see ppl with loomed boots), you can often hit with sideswings at an angle where you can't even see your opponent (the perfect tool for getting behind him!).

Be aware tho, you will be outranged on by the stab of most twohanders due to animations, and you can be spammed by the faster ones if you don't pay attention. Points put in WM really pays off with the poleaxe, as it helps compensate for ping/lagg when someone tries to spam you. Ath is very important for effective use of the poleaxe also imo, you will never hit any decent player with it unless your footwork is good. (Not so great players can be easily feinted by it tho). A balanced build (21-18, 18-21) is therefore what I would recomend.

Prediction and defence is king when duelling with the poleaxe, once you accept the fact that you have the slower weapon (and when up against the common greatswords, the shorter aswell), and start to play to the strenghts of the weapon, I think you will find it most effective and enjoyable^^

Sorry for the rant, and eventual vagueness, I'm really tired atm x)

Polearms are kewl, but anyone with any sense of dignity would use another weapon for dueling because polearms have stagger :(

^^this. Dueling with a 1 hander no shield is the coolest of the cool. Using a 1 hander with no shield is the most fun I've had in a long time.

^^also this. I wish they'd hurry up and implement WSE so we can get rid of this terrible mechanic.

Although polestun is an ok feature on its own imo, sadly people are obviously abusing it for spam (even though I've never been stunlocked once, but I guess I'm lucky...).

Although I think it would be sad if the devs decide to nerf poles in other ways (other than for internal balance ofc!) when the stun is really the only issue.

Remove it. It is lame, and as a dedicated pole user, I would not care one bit. (This would also help balance pikes for the better imo)

Never did know what that mechanic was called. I only knew it as "DAMN IT! Stop stunlocking me with a weapon that is already capable of smashing through my "shell" (huscarl) in 3 hits!"

Well now i know :-P

War Spear or Poleaxe are my favorites for 1 on 1 situations.

I've never been stunlocked once.

Stun lock on high tier polearms (speed 93 and down) is a myth. Its just like the "it went through my block".
Yes stun gives you less time to block, but still enough, eventhough the animations arent showing that you are blocking you still are.

Anyway has a lot of people already have said, its a matter of personal preference whicih weapon you duel with.
But I suggest a weapon with at leat 91 speed and 130+ length.

That's what I thought, and that's always been my experience, ty for clearing it up :D

On the other hand: A weird bug that often happens to me is when I see that I get a good hit on my opponent with my poleaxe (i.e the "stun"), and I try to disengage (you know, to reconcentrate), and my opponent tries to spam a counterattack (this is very common), he seems to be just instantly "popping" out of the animation with a swing (making it very hard to block).

Has anyone else noticed this?

Is it because of the same reason you often see your character doing other stuff than it's supposed to (blocking the wrong way etc.), then half a second later "pop" back in into the correct animation?

Yet another reason I wish to see the stun removed^^

The factual length of Bec is akin to one-handed weapons. So if you're a practitioner of Helicopter-fu, stay away, just take LHB or Glaive. You can also try GLA, which is a better flameberge, but it's slow as all hell, so takes great blocking. Well, that's what I think anyway.

Iron Staff, hands down.

The Poleaxe is the best dueling polearm.

It has great damage, and great length. (better length than the bec, and the other poleaxes)
It has a bonus against shields (better than bec)
It has a wicked stab (31 damagee).  This is better than all spears and other poleaxes.  Because if its length, it is an awesome stab indeed.

Btw I have a +1 poleaxe for sale or trade if anyone's interested.  :D
It really is the best polearm, but I'm switching to 1h.

The Poleaxe is the best dueling polearm.

It's a good polearm, but at 89 speed, it's definitely not the best dueling polearm.

Masterwork Warspear, Hands down.

It is a fine, fine weapon. Love using it, even with 1wpf and some PS it's very nice, though I especially enjoy it in 1 vs many situations. Can't wait to MW a Battle Fork next!

Disagree.  89 speed is adequate.  All its other stats are superior!

Most difficult weapon to fight against is Bec in my opinion.
You cant allow more then 2 failblocks vs this beast.

Maybe not the strongest, but it's fast, does a fine amount of damage, and it's beautiful.

It has the french rose on it... equals it's gay. Other then that it's very good, same speed as the great swords abit more length (on paper) more stab and about the same cut damage.

Gay, why? It looks nice imo.

I agree about the second part though, it's a nice rival of great swords, if you get used to it's length.

Actually looking at the stats now I think it should switch names with the german poleaxe.
