Title: Inherent weakness of tickbattles in open fields.
Post by: Tristan on June 17, 2011, 11:00:14 pm
Hello guys.

I was thinking about class when it hit me that there is a single reason why ranged is so popular. Generally I regard the game to be somewhat balanced right now (Ok, throwers got nerfed hard, but you know what I mean).

When playing with ticks if you attack in melee you risk getting swarmed when the players spawn again. With ranged you can be at a safe distance from your spawn while fighting.

The result of this, is, that unless you can spawn-rape the enemy, the melee attack is too risky compared to the ranged fighting and a final melee push.

Because of the ticks the melee push has few advantages. This would never change as long as ranged exist. Would hardly matter even if they got nerfed very hard.

I don't know how, but there must be a better way for melee to make sense with ticks. Or completely rethink battles in strat so ticks is not the way for it to work.

I believe this is why there are now spawn flags in strategus battles, that can be captured. AFAIK, they will be there in field battles as well.

This would make a whole lot of sense.

Does that mean if you capture them all, the enemy loses?

But what if you beat them so quickly that they still have most of their army?

Will the enemy lose like half of their troops of more due to the "full scale retreat" ?

Yes.

Don't know exactly, but i think the latter might be possible.
