Modern American dragons are usually cheesy. Chinese, Japanese dragons of folklore are pretty interesting, and so are the Nordic wyrms from the sagas.

Realtalk

One time when I was a kid my mom was Christmas shopping in the nerd store (pen & paper RPGs, tabletop games, Magic the Gathering, etc.) she picked up a book about dragons. An employee approached her and asked "Do you like dragons? I really like looking at illustrated books of dragons..." and my mom said "yes" and they stared at each other and shared a moment of acknowledgement, that dragons fucking rule.

Then the guy walked away and she bought some dumb nerd games for me and my brothers. That's my dragon story pls share if u like

Nerd stores were the best thing ever as a kid. The nerd store I sometimes went to sold Warhammer stuff, fantasy novels, RPGs, stuff like that, it was like heaven.

I love when games/stories make Dragons intelligent beings, not just some firebreathing birds.

That being said:

Seath the Scaleless (because what's better than some Dark Souls lore!)

A dragon that due to jealousy betrayed his immortal brethren (he was not immortal himself) by giving up the secret to their immortality. Was later driven mad by his research of immortality and sorcery.

Onyxia (WoW)

One of Nefarian's mightiest supporters is his younger sister, Onyxia. A clever, highly intelligent dragon, she delights in corrupting the mortal races by meddling in their political affairs. To this end, she takes on various humanoid forms and uses her charm and power to influence delicate matters between the different races. Onyxia has even assumed an alias once used by her father: the title of the royal House Prestor.

I like dragons with long necks and small heads. A little like this:

But overall dragons are IMO pretty overrated and and appear in too many fantasy series.

Mathew Mcconaghey is the axe guy. For a 2002 movie the CGI still is better than some recent stuff like got dragons cough

I guess we're doing both dragons and wyverns *adjusts glasses*.

Smaeuueuuueuug from hobbit was really sick in the movies, his voice was overwhelming and great, definitely the best they couldve done with him. Too bad he was killed off rather quickly and abruptly. I think they also goofed in the making, and at first he was a wyvern, but had to be edited to become a dragon, not sure if theres still a version which shows him as a wyvern, but still kinda funny.

Seath is pretty great, but Kalameet is best dragon in dark souls.

(click to show/hide)

FromSoftware knows their dragons and wyverns, and is definitely the game to have pulled them off the best to date. Not like, ugh, skyrim. Dragons were weaker than the average fucking npc there. Junk.

Obviously my post didn't get upvotes and laughing gif replies because no one got the pun, so allow me to explain.

It's a reference to the fact that Smaug names is close to smug, which means to feel content about oneself. In the image showed in HESKEYTIME's post, see, the dragon named Smaug is depicted with a large grin on his face, surrounded by his so coveted treasure, haha, so one could say Smaug is being smug about his actual "predicament", get it?

Lofwyr is pretty cool. He is a German megacorporate leader in the Shadowrun universe, the wealthiest individual on Earth, and also a Great Western Dragon. He prefers a metahuman form of a Caucasian human with long steel-grey hair and golden eyes.

Dark Sun is a cool Dungeons and Dragons setting. It's "post apocalyptic" but not modern. Just take your regular fantasy world with elves and shit, then nuke it into a sandy barren waste. Kind of like Dune. The hobbits there are cannibals and eat other intelligent beings. It's hard times. Anyway they have one of my favorite dragon varieties: the dracolich.

Once you reach the peak of your power as a human (or whatever standard race) wizard, you decide "hey this planet is circling the drain already, not like anything I do will make it much worse" and you sacrifice a couple thousand people/drain the surrounding miles of terrain for every last ounce of life and vitality to turn yourself into a motherfucking dracolich.

Congrats! You are now immortal, and nearly a god. Some do-gooder adventurers will probably kill you when they get to level 20, but meanwhile you can do whatever the fuck you want on this dying planet!!

Their myths are so complex and there are so many types of dragons, it basically has nothing to do with the western dragon, the obvious difference is they consider them celestial beings devoid of earthly traits such as good or evil, they are above those concepts. It has to do with buddism and their quest to traverse Samsara where good evil and such earthly concepts don't exist and are irrelevant. To put it simply the dragon can't do wrong or good, they just do what is right/correct. In some myths a Dragon will flood the village killing everybody but saving 5 other villages with that action, it is not considered good or evil but the right thing to do on a cosmic level.

On the other hand dragons in the west in view of christian church were always considered evil and demonic (same as serpants), there are even hero saints slaying dragons.

On the look of eastern dragons, they typically have the head of a camel, horns or a deer, eyes of a hare, scales of a carp, paws of a tiger, and claws resembling those of an eagle. In addition it has whiskers, a bright jewel under its chin, and a measure on the top of its head which enables it to ascend to Heaven at will. It's a general description and has many variations.

About Oni, the same thing goes for many other deities, Oni, Fudo Myo of a Hannya mask would look like devil/satan to a western christian, yet it has quite different meaning and symbolism in eastern culture. I have a Hannya mask tattoo and have been asked several times why did I choose to tattoo a demon or a devil on myself and even once how do I go to church with that thing

Stolen? More like an inspiration thing. Everything is influenced or inspired by something else, afterall.
