Title: Learning German for fun and profit
Post by: Plarbis on March 22, 2016, 12:20:28 am
Hallo. Ich kann ein bischen Deutsch sprechen, aber nicht viel.

Recently, someone (Kais?) made fun of meine Fähigkeiten.
I'm looking for an internet acquaintance who speaks German
and won't mind if I ask questions from time to time.

Basically I am

I have a question:
Why on Earth would you want to learn German?
Seems a pretty useless skill to me, tbh :P

Knowing a second or a third language isn't bad. For you, or as just something to do.

Generally speaking that is of course true. I merely question the choice here.
Spanish, French, Chinese for a challenge, Russian maybe, Arabic, Italian for the dolce vita... all of these seem more useful than German

Well, what you are devaluing because of familiarity is properly exotic to an outsider.

German, French, Spanish and Italian are all good choices for someone in or interested in Europe to learn.
It is also the language of the powerhouse of eurozone economy, so it might be useful to know in that sense too.

But Germany is nowhere spoken outside of Germany, Austria and partly Switzerland.
While especially French and Spanish are wider spread.

I mean, if he wants to, go ahead by all means...

True, Spanish is extremely wide spread. Not far behind English in the number of speakers. French is spoken in some interesting places as well. They would be great choices for someone interested in travel.

German is very useful, it's just that I can't stand it (try not to take offense please). For me the list: English (need to work a lot on it), Spanish, Italian, Japanese, French, Portuguese, Russian, Chinese. In that order. Rest can come after. Would probably never attempt to learn Finnish or Hungarian. Will try black tribe languages from central Africa before any of those two.

Forget Finnish :D

Khorin taught me a little about the basic concept behind Finnish. That is stuff for nightmares

He's a cuck that's been trained to never, ever show any sort of positive feelings towards his nationality and culture, unless it's to praise how unationalistic it is. He can't help it.
