Title: Italians, tell me what to get when im in Rome. Food.
Post by: Thomek on May 08, 2015, 01:20:37 am
Ok, so I'm heading off to Rome for my cousins wedding for a week. Yes people, be jelly!

Anyway, I love to cook nice things, and I thought to get as much food as I can with me back to Poland! (Here italian food is expensive, limited selection and overpriced luxury imports..)

I'm talking cheeses, salamis, pancetta, olives, sun dried tomatoes and other condiments.

Where should I go to get it? What brands? You have any favourites? I just expect to be hustled by tourist shops that sell me expensive crap, so I'm asking :P

I'm not rich, so I'm looking for affordable, but relatively high quality stuff. :)

This is probably not the best forum to ask this, but nevertheless, some of you might be sophisticated gentlemen well versed in the better Roman foodshops?? who knows right???

I'll take the chance.

Ask around where a local market is, they usually have good stuff, and there probably are some specialised delicatessen shops.

k this thread is racist

k, like, there's no particular brand for what you've mentioned that you should get; the thing is, in italy food it's sort of culture, therefore the average level is pretty high, especially for the everyday things such as olive oil, tomato sauces and so on. so for olive oil just get the extravergine one, that is the best and probably the only one we eat here, as for the brand even those at the discount should be good enough tbh, maybe bertoli should be a good choice for you. as for cheese and "affettati" it depends on what you're looking for, i'm no particular lover of cheese but meat is my jam; honestly salame and pancetta aren't seen as fine cold meat, they're very cheap compared to the rest, and, tho i like them, i'd suggest you try something like bresaola (expensive indeed, but it's beef and it has very low percentage of fat) and prosciutto crudo (now you can buy the boxed one which is a bit lower than average or get it directly from the butcher, wether is good or not depends where he takes it from, if he just started slicing it it won't be extremely good (actually is shit almost), if it's the end of the prosciutto and it's close to the bone, it will taste sweet and my goodness :Q ). prosciutto cotto ("di parma" is the best), mortadella and coppa for cheap but very tasty affettati.
i don't know if you like vinegar too, cause we do, and if you'd like to buy some take the aceto balsamico (possibly from modena), love it but just few drops (it's very strong flavor), and only with salad.
and one thing for god's sake, there's one thing you cannot forget about italian food: fucking. red. wine. do NOT, i repeat DO NOT leave italy without tasting red wine (problem is we have hundreds of red wines, brands and vineyards and shit, but the three i would suggest are montepulciano d'abruzzo (very cheap but quite nice taste, especially for the price) montefalco rosso (do not mistake it with sagrantino di montefalco, one of the best wine in the world and as such very expensive lol ) and chianti ofc), or if you like light and quite sweet wine refosco dal penducolo rosso.)
if you need anything just ask, but i believe other italians should know things better than me (i don't usually do the grocery shopping). the last thing, about olives; honestly i prefer the greek ones but that's my personal preference. oh and ofc pizza, try the one with pomodorini (cherry tomatoes, they're smaller but much more tastier and sweet tomatoes), it's my fav these days.

prosciutto cotto ("di parma" is the best)

wat? parma = crudo

lol ye dunno why i confused that with parmacotto, which isn't the best for sure; must have made some confusion when i was writing there; again, no particular brand stands out for what i know, as i said it isn't a fine meat thus finding good one shouldn't be hard at all

As Darmaster wrote, Breasaola is one of the best affettato (cold meats, sliced meats),  the taste is good imo, and it has a lot of proteins and a low fat percentage
(click to show/hide)
The Bresaola produced in Valtellina ( Lombardy) is considered one of the best quality of Breasola( i'm quite sure there are also other very good kinds of Breasaola produced elsewhere, sometimes using horse meat or deer meat instead of beef).  The problem of affettati imo is that, on average, they have a lot of salt, so if you eat a lot of them, you are also gonna eat a lot of salt.
Other kind of meat worth to mention is  the Fiorentina steak imo, (if you haven't tried it already) I ate it a few times in Tuscany, it's very good.

I don't eat cheese and i rarely eat tomatoes, most tomatoes imo don't have a great taste,  I agree with Darmaster that the small kind, the pomodorini, are much more tastier than the regular one. I'm not much into olive oil, but if you intend to buy it, only buy the one stored in dark bottles, the light accelerates the oxidation of the product and therefore the rancidification of the oil.

If you like  vinegear with a strong sour taste, red vinegear from wine is quite good, in  supermarkets it's quite cheap, so you could buy serveral brands and see which one you like the most, the aceto balsamico of Modena has a bitter-sweet taste, personally i don't like it.

Regarding red  wine, if you want a quality product without spending  a lot, Teroldego is probably one of the best  red wine you can get (quality-price wise), one bottle (75 cl) here costs around 5 euro( i guess in Rome it's gonna cost a bit more).   The reserve of Teroldego can be ~4-12 times more expensive ( 20-60+ euro) but it's not worth it imo, the regular Teroldego  is very good.
"Among the red wines of Trentino, Teroldego is the most famous, as to be called the "prince of Trentino wines". The Reserve of Teroldego is produced only in great vintages from grapes carefully hand-selected in the best areas of the Piana Rotaliana"
There ain't no red wine like the good old Tiroler Gold(not for that price, imo it's actually much better than more expensive wines),  some sources say  that this was the name given to this  wine in  the court in Vienna, then the name changed into Tiroldico and later Teroldego.

Anyway, regardless if it was appreciated or not by some noble cunts, try it yourself and see if you like it.

All the ancient pictures seem to indicate that the Romans consumed nothing but olives and wine.
And we all know that Italy's performance during both world wars indicates just how slow the country advances in progress.

So it's safe to assume that you will find nothing to eat or drink in Rome but wine and olives.

I realize you can't bring it back but if you simply want some gelato the dark chocolate ice cream was my favourite flavour. "cioccolato fondente". If I ever remember where the wonderful gelato shop with no sign, no name, in a residential street with a big ass line and a door plastered with awards I will tell you.

And you should get whatever the cheese is required to make "cacio e pepe". The sauce for the pasta is slowly melted cheese and butter. Its awesome.

? are you saying that since the roman empire italians  (intended as italian peninsula inhabitants)  consumed food that couldn't let them progress in history? Wut?

Do not take me for some follower of post hoc logical fallacy, my good man. i shall demonstrate to you.

As you can see by the following pictures, all of which are paintings dating back to the time the Roman empire ruled half the known world, so this is nothing if not historical evidence:

The Romans depicted themselves of consuming nothing in their cave painting art, but olives and wine. both of which are very important to Italian culture, even in today's times.

now, Look towards both WWs that savage this great universe. judging by the Italians performance during WW1, and sub-sequentially, the the fascist black shirts in WW2. we notice how poorly the area performs against the modernize opposing sides during that time period. Not only that, but take a look at the arms and weapons the Italians used during the conflicts, poor materials, poor craftsmanship. outdated weapons, tanks outclassed in many respects. is a clear indication that the pizza-eaters are slow to advance, whether its technological or cultural

so, now that we have concluded the people of Mario-brothers ville are slow and stubborn, We can safely assume, that

A. Italians have not progressed culturally enough to expand into a wider palette of cuisines
B. Drawing from Conclusion A and the above shown primary evidence, that the small palette of available will consist of nothing but Olives and wine.

This is the only logically explanation, and frankly, anyone who disagrees is nothing but a moronic twat and a non-gentleman.

Yes because absolutely nothing happened in italy during the 14th and 15th century, the peninsular is definitely not the home of the renaissance and the birth of the modern world.

On topic, its quite expensive but i went with my friend to the eataly in rome, such an amazing selection there but of course the prices are quite high.

My dear sir,  when Jesus Christ came back from America in 1492, he brought tomatoes, pumpkins and beans in Rome, so it is  safe to assume that nowadays, you will find nothing else to eat or drink in Italy except beans, tomatoes, pumpkins and ofc wine and  olives.

In WW1 Italy didn't perform  as badly as some may think, at the end, them italians soldiers defeated my ancestors  and conquered their land  (central powers got ganked). They won , probably using some black magic,  you can't possibly win against the most agile and  better looking people of the alps  without using sum dark spells.  I tell you, they summoned ündead and shit . Many  historians think that some high priests of the catholic church made a secret deal with the necromancers sect  of Rome, apparently the priests  promised them that they  would not be persecuted by Jesus Christ  anymore, if  the necromancers convinced the sneaky undeads (who at the time lived in the dungeons) to steal weapons  from the Austro-Hungarians and German soldiers; some people believe  that's why today there are many necromancy schools in Rome.

Seriously,  Italy's army in WW1 wasn't that bad, the soldiers had more or  less the same weapons technology-wise of the other armies. It  also was  the  the biggest army Italy has ever had since  the unification in 1861, almost twice more soldiers than in ww2.  Around one third of  Austro-Hungarian casualties in ww1 occurred on the italian or alpine front.  In ww2 the italian army was indeed a total joke.

Alright so I'm back with a kind of follow up

.. Spent almost 100 euros in http://www.volpetti.com/

:D serious food heaven there.. Got Bresaola, salami, some goat cheese, Pecorino, olive oils.. some olives and sundried tomatoes. In that shop they throw food after you, let you taste anything, but ofc. charges plenty for their excellent goods.

Generally had a very nice stay in Rome, altough I got a serious cold and had to sit alone in a small hot room for 24h with just my phone and italian tv.. (ok, and my penis.)

Anyway, was good. 10/10
