Title: MGS5
Post by: Xant on December 20, 2014, 10:42:35 pm
Anyone played it yet?

The optimization of this game puts other "next gen" titles to shame. It looks stunning, yet it runs 100% smooth with everything maxxed out. Gameplay seems pretty fun so far, too.

Isn't it just some prelude to the real game next year or something?

Or something, yes. It's short, so I don't recommend buying it. But I hear some people have working torrents..

I didn't get to play the 4th one because I don't own a PS3. Which is a shame because I loved this series around the MSG2 and Snake Eater era.

Gameplay is really fun, I love the attention to detail in everything.

That said, the plot in MGS games sometimes takes a turn for the very weird.

Don't give a fuck about MGO (at least until I see what is it all about), these FOB takedown one on one online missions are more than enough for me.

Can't wait to play this game, seems epic and amount of stuff they put into it and quality of it. Astonishing.

Wouldn't be surprised you skip this one. Already noticed your tendency towards crappy AAA games. Rest assured, this game will be GOTY 2015, despite Witcher 3 being awesome.

Yes, well. The only thing ruining MGS games is that it's made by the Japs, and they insist on making everything as weird as possible. And thus we have fucked up storylines and fucked up characters in a game that at times seems realistic, but then suddenly turns into anime, and back again.

It's harder than I thought :o

And I am having - as always with open world games lately - the problem of choosing the input controller.

For movement in general, gamepad is great. Having more than just 2 digital movement speeds is great but...

...shooting is ridiculous with it. So, m+k or gamepad?! D:

What's the deal with the lack of mouse support in menus. That makes absolutely no sense.
Also navigating tabs you need to press 1 and 3. This is not remappable? I use arrow keys so that's miles away.

Post by: Molly on September 05, 2015, 04:23:27 pm
I had no relation to the series before this and yet I do enjoy the game.
It's very well made, top optimized, fun, challenging (at least for me as newby) and entertaining.
R&D is fun, Mother Base management adds a fun layer on top.
Haven't been that far yet but having "buddies" around who you can order around during mission seems cool.

I'd say 9/10 is warranted. Probably more for the fans of the series.
Title: Re: MGS5
Post by: Mr_Oujamaflip on September 06, 2015, 12:58:32 am
I'm not that far but I'm not liking it so much. It runs wonderfully, I haven't seen it skip a beat on maximum, 1440p 60FPS. Not even a blip.

I don't like the controls much and it's very, very cutsceney and stylised, even getting on a horse has some weird minicutscene that's overkill. Mechanics-wise I haven't seen anything too special, pretty standard TPS but a lot more stealth orientated.

And the lack of mouse control on the menus really, really annoys me.
Title: Re: MGS5
Post by: Asheram on September 06, 2015, 01:55:58 am
LoL yeah I agree that horse thing should've been a 1 time thing not every time you mount up. Also Miller is pretty annoying over the radio or is it Ocelot? And the credit rolls after every mission lol. Theres a lot of annoying stuff mixed in but overall I am really enjoying the game. Wish they would have given zip ties to use on tranq/stunned mobs as sometimes they wake up on their own and if there are a lot of guards capturing the post is a pain.
Title: Re: MGS5
Post by: Molly on September 06, 2015, 09:34:49 am
Playing with a gamepad. It's way easier to move around the rubble with it since it simply allows for a finer movement.
And don't find the no mouse in menu thing that bad. WSAD and space replace it well enough. Still, a very odd thing to do.

I do like the mini-cutscenes tbh. Gives it some epicness just to mount D-Horse :D And it's short enough to amuse me every time

And one thing I really enjoy by now: planting all the C4 even on not required tech. The world is completely persistent. So blown up stuff stays broken the next time you come around that certain outpost or village.
Since you detonate over RF in the order you planted the C4, just get comfy on some overseeing hill and watch chaos unfold when you detonate  8-)

Asked for a refund/10.

After the weirdest, most nonsensical, worst written and longest tutorial in the history of man, I thought maybe the game was done with being gay. But instead it chose to spring some ghosts on me in the middle of normal gameplay. Yeah, not paying 60 euros for that.

Title: Re: MGS5
Post by: Xant on September 07, 2015, 11:39:51 pm
Yup. The gameplay itself is nothing special either. I mean, it's pretty fun, but it's nothing revolutionary, the AI is dumb, and after a while it gets rather boring. Seems like a 6-7/10 for me if you ignore the story and Hideo Kojima wanting to spam his name everywhere because Konami got rid of him.

FYI, kick a stunned/sleeping enemy to wake them up, and then just aim a gun at them. They will then go into surrender mode and wont get up unless they're found by another soldier or the base goes on full combat alarm. You can also do this by sneaking up on an enemy and aiming a gun at them (hold Q and tell them to "get down"). Also lets you interrogate them. If you want the permanently gone, just fulton them out, but kick them first so they don't scream for help.

You get a bandana for snake, or you can just use one of your minions.

Although playing with female chars is really annoying as they got this horrible, super loud wheezing everytime you end a sprint.

From what I read it's unclear.
Some claim there is a minor difference in recoil, shake, sprint time and so on but mostly people state that it's barely noticeable if even that.
Afaik you can only replay the story missions with minions tho. First play-through has to be Snake. Dunno about side-ops.

This is the most manliest game ive ever played in my life.

The main character is a bearded, eye-patch wearing ex-military grumpy badass with a robot arm that smokes cigars after every mission. He has a dog who is so badass that he carries a knife. His so manly that even his dog has an eye-patch. Lets also not forget about the killing commies, giant robots, explosions, helicopters, armybrocoding and armytalk part. And also lets not forget that every female character is a hot murderer babe with tits who wear so little clothing that all asses and tits are showing.

MEN!!!!

On FOB missions it's a big difference between chars depending on their skils, but I haven't noticed any major differences in freeroam/normal missions.

Ofc, a lot of your combat unit got special skills that affect them anytime you play as them. Like, longer reflex mode, higher fulton recovery chance, quicker weapon aiming, faster sprint etc. These skills can be seen when you choose a char or in the staff management screen.

Oh, and most of your combat units (especially the females) breathes more heavily than snake after sprinting. Sounds like they all got asthma.

Also: some fun with the broken weapon customization.

It's by far the best, unless they did balance changes since a couple months ago. Literally walk around invisible and start shooting people before they realize you're there.

True but only when they come from behind. They are rather easy to spot with this heat wave emission thing look they have in stealth. If they come from the front.
Of course it's perfect for backstabbing.

I have to admit tho that I haven't even played Infil yet and I won't for a while. Don't wanna temp myself with cheesy tactics :D
That's no problem actually cuz I do enjoy Enforcer and Scout too. Both have very distinctive roles and it works. It takes a bit of playing to make the Scout work nicely tho.
I have 2 loadouts I switch between on my Scout: Auto-Sniper and Plushy Snares or Assault rifle and those tracker balls for marking.
Plushy Snares are awesome for camping  Put one behind you far enough away at the entrance of a one entry spot and snipe away. Instantly turn around and shoot pistol when you hear the *meeeooow* sound :D Works great...

Bought it from steam sale and I liked it . The ending and the fact that chapter 2 has mainly just extreme difficulty replay missions from the first chapter was pretty disappointing. People thought some later patch would fix that and give those missing episodes but at this point I wouldn't be too hopeful. The Truth reveal was a nice touch with all those Moby Dick references, but it still feels like it wasn't supposed to end there (there is even scrapped footage of a mission 51 on youtube from the people who bought the collectors edition and saw the unfinished cutscenes). Even if that mission was added it still feels like it would have been unfinished. Rumors say there was supposed to be a complete chapter 3 called "Peace". Some rumors even so wild that to unlock that chapter all FOB nukes have to be destroyed (what a load of BS). The side OPs get repetitive and annoying very quickly. Just unnecessary filler material if you don't count some of them that drive the main story forwards.

With all that said I still really like this game. It adjusts the difficulty against you according to your play style. For example if you headshot everyone all the time, people start wearing helmets etc. The fights with the mist units became very intense during the first play through because you are constantly underpowered against them for not having good enough weapons developed. You had to think of some imaginative way of defeating them and fail miserably multiple times (I guess you could grind better stuff from side OPs but I really didn't feel like doing that while not being sure if it would help all that much). Sometimes frustrating but mostly just made me try harder and think faster and better. All so much more rewarding once you got it right in the end. Many of those "FUCK YEAH I DID IT!"- moments. Kind of spoils the feeling if you look some strategy up from youtube tho. I did that once with some extreme level because I wanted to get to the end of story and was bored of replaying that mission. What it lacks in story it makes up in the game play. It's not ground breaking or perfect but in my opinion it works pleasingly well as a whole. I also like the soundtrack. I thought I hated The Final Countdown with passion, but when I heard it in the game I didn't. It seemed to fit in well. Solid 9/10 heh. I just can't hate this game even with major issues with the plot it still has it's moments. Kind of like in Far Cry 3 if you were able to ignore the fact that the protagonist is annoying fucking piece of shit douche, you enjoyed that game very much even after all those radio towers :D.

despite the cringey, juvenile premise/story/characters, the gameplay is ok. not even that great but decent stealth shooter. so I stick with it and start to enjoy it somewhat.

Then I get to mission 11 or something when I am rescuing guy with robot legs whose diagolue that reminds me of budget voice acted and translated ps1 cutsenes. I spend ages capturing tons of enemies, get discovered blow up 2 mechs and make it out with the hostage.

then after more cheesy D movie cutscenes I have to get away from giant mech controlled by cliche mc cliche skull villain. and cant get in helicopter until I lose the mech. So get on my horse and ride away sticking to cover. then next thing I know the game says "fine have it your way mission aborted", I was going so fast that the "warning" was like not even fully pronounced before it told me I was aborting.

ppffft uninstall trash game, came here to rage post necro :D

I cannot understand how this is rated 9/10 - 10/10. even if didn't rate it way down for being extremely uninspired and cheesy af, the gameplay has alot of flaws and would still only be an average game.

Yes, the game is a 6.5/10 at best, decent gameplay, but everything else is fucking shit. And even the gameplay becomes retarded at times.

I do like the freedom to just go around and stealth around the world and stealing shit for base management. Kinda feels like a more enjoyable sandbox version to Splinter Cell. Its main strength imo is that nobody did it like this before. I somewhat understand why someone would rate it a 9-10, if he was retarded.

The open world crap was just pointless, there was nothing to do, and it made the missions themselves less interesting and unique.

The original playstation MGS is still my favorite and the most fun to play through for me, even though I've done so dozens of times now.

The only MGS I played was Snake Eater on PS2, and I really enjoyed it. So much that I'd replay it until the disc was so scratched that it either took ages to load or didn't load at all. Some time ago I watched a full playthrough of the game and it was still good. Maybe I'll buy a used PS2 and get a bit nostalgic this summer
