Title: On 9gag now
Post by: Daunt_Flockula on December 05, 2014, 09:59:28 pm
Here is the link: http://9gag.com/gag/aNoRRp0

Somebody already commented and received info from me about the Kickstarter. Check the link out occasionally if you want. If this makes it into the front page, you may expect more spotlight. Some of you may not like it, but it's still a good place for getting some attention.

We can't know for sure. I know there are a shitton of self-absorbed teenagers in there, but there are also people who would be interested in the KS.

Seems like the gif post is receiving booming attention already. Last time I checked, there were only 60-something upvotes and 13 comments. Now it is more than 5k upvotes and over 100 comments. I still don't know how much of a contribution this will have on our publicity and KS revenue, but at least it didn't turn out to be an effort in vain. Also, the fact that it has already reached 5k means we may expect the post to still be under spotlight and probably even make it to numbers above 10k.

$0 backed so far today, so possibly not a huge impact, but it's good publicity anyway.

Half the comments seem to be likening it to LoZ: Skyward Sword. Unexpected.

That, Die by the Sword and possibly Clang. All I am hoping is that at least some of those people went on and checked the Kickstarter page. Genuinely interested people will possibly spread the word and might lead to a better impact.

Also they compare it to Zelda Skyward Sword, really ? I never played it, but looks like childish crap for young japanese and koreans

Can't say 9gag members are by any means the ideal audience for this game. I kind of expected downright weird and irrelevant comments right in the beginning. At least I tried. I thought it wouldn't hurt giving them a gif, because gifs were implemented not long ago and they love to check it out when they see one. Just ignore the shitty comments. There must be people, even if they may be few in number, who may be genuinely interested :D

Yeah, there's not even a link to the kickstarted, if I'm not mistaken. People are lazy, most won't bother to google it because of a simple Gif.

It could have been done better, but great initiative regardless.

Well, I tried to not make it look like a direct attempt at advertising. Still I paid enough attention to provide a link to the Kickstarter as soon as the first comment arrived. Later I did it again in another reply. In my experience, if you act too explicit in your efforts to promote something in there, it backfires almost immediately.

Ok.. yeah probably you are right :)

Was just frustrated cause it must have gotten a ton of views with so many comments. :) But I do see nice working being done in comments to make things right.

Holy, fuck I browsed through 9gag again for the first team in 3 years or something.

Great exposure though, just a lot of negative comments from some really ignorant people.

I would have already bashed a lot of them real hard by now, but I'm just keeping it cool because being the poster, I pretty much look like the crew's representative. Otherwise, I am barely holding my anger back.

This a thousand times

This board is already enough like those three sites.  Advertizing at any of them isn't the best of ideas and will produce the opposite effect of what was intended.

Post by: Daunt_Flockula on December 09, 2014, 09:48:15 pm
You keep saying that, but what kind of negative effect are you even talking about? You are offended by the retarded comments? Go check out the Youtube videos or any other media where advertisements took place so far. Retardation is everywhere. Not everyone has to know about or is interested in this kind of game. The ultimate goal is to reach out to however few interested people may be out there.

Seriously, there is no need to go on and on about this "it will hurt the publicity" nonsense. A bunch of stupid teenagers and their equally stupid comments can't harm anything. Most of the 18k upvotes (this was the latest number I checked) probably didn't even give much of a damn about the game and just pressed that upvote button. Go do better stuff yourself if you have such a good opinion about publicity and public affairs.

Pretty much that - the opposite effect of publicity is no publicity. There are no negative effects from publicity.

Also, those comments are hilarious, it shows that it's important to really spell out everything.
A fifth believes this is clang.
A fifth believes this is a WII game.
A fifth believes you have to drag your mouse all the way.
A fifth believes "it's been done already" (as in "there was already a game where people fight with swords")
and then a fifth is just random comments or our fellow community warriors

But it doesn't matter, what matters is that as many people see it as possible - for every 30 ridiculous comments, one actually googles it because he thinks "hm.. looks interesting, actually". Mission accomplished.

You did really good here.

Nice share, much ty really.

There's been a big increase in YouTube subs (was wondering why I suddenly had a full page of youtube emails :P), so it does have a very good effect :) we're in it for the long haul here!
Check a lot of the new cool indie games on steam, they all tried Kickstarter/Indiegogo too, because why not, and they suffered through the same, some had it more rough than us and still they're doing amazing on Steam afterwards. We should hopefully be quite alright despite being far from our goal.

Also don't let the negative or troll comments bother you, it happens to every game -- imagine working on COD or Battlefield --  and as chadz wrote, any PR is good when the alternative is no PR.

However judging from those comments it would seem clarity is a must, some sort of way to condense 'MELEE' into an explanatory image or gif.

why does everyone think the game was cancelled lol?

as far as I understand it seems they think it's CLANG for some reason... Don't ask why :D

A lot of people have lost trust in indie developers on kickstarter. People want to see a near finished game or a playable alpha/beta, and that's what the Donkey crew are probably working on

The exposure is needed! keep posting!

That's not the problem, people don't even know we exist. Far fewer have even seen the KS vid or page. 22k Views on that youtube vid.

Now. That's a problem. Not enough hype, simple as that.

I would say its far from pointless.. its the most successful advertisement (viewer wise) that we had. Hell its maybe the ONLY successful one we have had. I personally think daunt is a (semi)hero for at least trying something instead of sitting on his hands crying about how terrible shit is. Of course it went sideways its a thread, even we dont manage to stay on topic for more than 1 page and we even like the damn game. Its all about exposure anyone truely intrested can just paste the gif title into the magical google and find the project. The best you can hope for from the rest is that they tell their friends and spread the lords message.

That advertising campaigns on infamous ass ends of the internet are doomed to fail.  You expect them not to rip this game to shreds?

Main reason we have been "Slowing down" in the campaign recently is just we are too busy cooking up something cool that can hopefully go viral.. It's a risk, but we can see the light now. We are just too low on manpower to be really active with you guys, and we are very sorry for this. Hopefully we can remedy this and go for a real sprint near the end of the KS :)

Anyway, that your kind of attitude lombard is not productive.. We might as well just give up right? :)

At this point, all PR is good PR. People need to know about us. We are not nearly famous enough to create any controversies.

Title: Re: On 9gag now
Post by: MeevarTheMighty on December 11, 2014, 12:44:12 am
Have you played it?

I have. It's not the solution at this stage of development. Even in the final months before release, a playable version is one thing that actually can generate bad publicity, because most people want to play finished games and don't have the enthusiasm, patience or emotional control to judge alpha/beta versions sensibly.

For the Kickstarter, the game needs to be sold by showing as much good potential as possible, while showing as few imperfections as possible. Open access achieves almost the opposite of this.

That's exactly what I meant, I saw at least 1-2 sensible posts by him. Do a leshma = good post against the odds. (though as with most 'bad guys' in here, the reasonable posts of leshma became more frequent over time  :()

Not that I actually wanted to compare the two in terms of quality or fuckeduptedness.
