So I'm reading "The Red Badge of Courage" written by Stephen Crane and I encountered a mysterious word that keeps on popping up. "Cracker Box", I tried to google for it but it just brings up a ton of boats and restuarants. Can anybody explain this to me? It's taking the piss.

Sounds like it might be a box containing crackers

That was my first tought, I quickly realised it would fit in extremly weird into the context.

Like all good stories this one starts with... After the war, millions of brave American soldiers returned home. They were young and about to start families, therefore many homes had to be built. Suddenly, houses started popping around every major city in USA, today known as suburbs. Typical house looked like it was made from cardboard, was incredibly dull looking and therefore known as cracker-box.

its talking about a box people stood upon to get higher then the crowd, its kind of like a milk crate, but made out of wood. You can see pictures of kids standing on them selling newspapers normally, or people shouting to crowds to tell them an announcement.

they were normally much smaller then say the milk crate, and could also be made out of metal, like tin.
