Title: Promoting Events/Competitions
Post by: Tydeus on May 16, 2014, 04:41:34 pm
I'd like to reorganize(read: introduce organization), to increase accessibility. What I'm thinking, is to only have the main "Events" section be for actual events and general discussion(pertaining to events/tournaments/leagues, of course), and have Tournaments and Leagues with their own Child Boards. That is, each League should have its own Child Board, so people can easily set-up times for their matches. On top of this, I think it would help a lot to standardize thread titles as well. Something like what is done for the marketplace threads. Some examples of what I mean, would be:

[Region(s)]Event name[time, including time zone|date]
[NA/EU]Tydeus' Rock Throwing Contest[18:00 GMT|May 16]
[NA]Tydeus' 5v5 Tourney(No need for a date, if it's a larger tourney that can't be completed on a single day)

What else needs done?

Edit: Also, I'd like to get Leagues going, where we use the the duel/rageball servers for fights. We should see the return of EU_6 as soon as chadz/cmp get around to copying over the appropriate files from NA_6. I'm not certain what requirements should be, I'll probably make a thread specifically to discuss that.

A support from devs (giving heirlooms and gold to winning teams in events like 4vs4 or duelers in duels) would increase a lot the participation tho...

Considering the rather low population crpg has by now, I think you're too late.

Nonetheless, I like to be proven wrong.

Count me in as referee at whatever league/tournament/fun-event - hit me with a PM.

Yeah. It would. I had thought about giving League/Tournament winners unique items(Crowns?) that they can use until the conclusion of the next tournament/season, but I'd have to be rank 10 on the website, so that's a no-go(chadz/harald only, not even cmp can do this). I know chadz has been in support of loom rewards in the past, the issue is simply how to reduce his involvement to only giving approval, so we can have someone else handle distribution.

Anyway, I DO plan to make something happen here with tournaments/leagues(I don't think single day events justify these types of rewards).

Perhaps, we'll see though. Panos' tournament made me think otherwise, though.

I have an idea, unfortunately not many people are signing up for the NA clan league, so what if we did something like the EU Nations Cup, but instead there would be a team for each region like the midwest, southeast, canada etc.

pleeeease

Too few teams for a league, that way. Ideally, you'd want a minimum of 8 teams. I think, with proper organization and promotion beforehand(and rewards), we can easily achieve that for NA.

I'm finding that strategus is a major conflict with any events. The dedicated strategus players shun their friends for missing their battles and subsequently make event populations drop. if there was a way to keep event times from conflicting with strategus battle times it would increase the participation in events greatly I would imagine.

Indeed. Events take a hit, but Tournaments and Leagues can still go unhindered. Trying to figure something out with events, although I'm not sure anything can really be done. I think they just require a larger playerbase, or an inactive strat tbh.

one thing that Panos's Tournament was a huge prize pool, couple that with a duel tournament and you get participation.

All other tournaments have lacked a sufficient prize pool, this needs to be helped out by the Devs

chadz> giving looms for tourney npnp

So we will be having LPs as official rewards for the larger events, although we can still do other things on top of this as well.

You could try giving away CD keys.
I know quite a few community members would be very interested in that.

I think rather than having a "Tournaments" child board, it'll be more beneficial to just have a "Scheduling" section, although Leagues could still have their own child boards if deemed necessary. This way people can quickly, and easily, look for scheduling info in a single spot, rather than having to sift through information elsewhere. How it would work, is every "Match" would get its own thread with a simple formatting structure like so...

[Amurrica League] HoC vs Scumps

Here, not only scheduling would be discussed, but also results and any disputes as well.

Honestly, I'm not a big fan of loom rewards.  The best duelers in the game aren't the ones who need more looms, while events and all are a great idea, the rewards need to be thought out.  And while Crowns and such are a neat idea, again, its not the top duelers in the game that you need to make events for to encourage them to keep playing.

Or, alternatively, there need to be events that don't reward just twitchy combat skill.  Maybe something like Tuttenseppe's (I think that's him) obstacle course race map, or the stone throwing event that Tydeus and I discussed.

There have been a lot of duel tournaments in the past. At the moment, I'm more focused on tournaments that are at least a 3v3 in size(not including bench warmers). The rewards I talked about above, are just another way to get more people interested, since we know not everyone is stimulated by competition. It's worth mentioning though, that you don't have to get first place to get any rewards, and we're also looking into other things like raffles that match spectators can participate in.

A betting system would be fun.

Plsplspls, get harald to give you the rights and have this done, nothing would be cooler than an extra special crown, horse or sword!
