Ive recently started loving octopusses. I mean I wouldnt like to pet one, but they are pretty damn cool.  They have really neat skills. Like opening jars, blending, squeezing through very tiny holes and they are very intelligent in general. Look at this fucker for instance trying to be clever and blending with the boat:

No, that's not a centipede or millipede. That's an adult female trilobite beetle. They retain their larval form and end up looking pretty damn cool. Like a thing that went extinct millions of years ago.

Sea urchin that has armored plates instead of spines. Colobocentrotus atratus.

The african hairy frog. During mating season, males grow "hair" that actually lets them draw oxygen from the water more efficiently. This allows the male to stay underwater and guard the eggs for a very long time. They also defensively break their toe bones, creating sharp spines that deter attackers from eating them.

Blind snake? Nightmare sized earthworm? No, it's a caecelian female with her brood. They are limbless eyeless amphibians that live underground. In this species, the female has a rapidly regenerating outer layer of skin (3 days for full replacement). Why? the young eat the mother's skin until they have grown enough to go out on their own.

... it's an ant. So what? It's not an ant though. It's an ant-mimic spider. A spider has two body sections compared to an ant's three, but the ant-mimic is shaped such to resemble an ant. It even holds its two extra legs up like antennae. I've seen one of these in my house before, hiding among some carpenter ants. Cool stuff.

I really like birds, although I don't think I can show one that people never heard of.

That shape and the colors it forms, really nice  :)

Nm, I found some really interesting stuff, and ones that I already knew ofc.

The fuck is that? A tumor* or a tick or something? Nope, it's a parasitic fly, related to house flies, deer flies, etc. It gets between the joints of a walking stick bug and drinks its fluids, just like a tick does to mammals.

More wingless flies. They feed on bat poop and live in colonies near bat roosts. They are social in the same way as bees or termites. Females groom one another, and some males become infertile and live much longer than any other individuals. These elder guardians sit near the colony and emit a very high pitched buzz that alerts bats to stay away from the group of poop eatin' flies.

Most corals live in shallow water, near the surface. Here's a few varieties that live on the ocean floor, thousands of meters deeper than "regular" corals.

A Nightingale. I have one of these around here, it's been singing since May now. So wonderful.

When I'm walking home I can already hear it when I'm getting close. Doing it at night at times too, very loud but beautiful.

Managed to get a glimpse of it a few times, but it's usually hiding somewhere. Saw it on the ground hopping around once.

Really cool birds  :)

I have some magpies flying around here recently. They are not that widespread in this area, so I got a bit surprised.
Last time I have seen one passing by it was fought and scared away by all the bigger birds.

The birds were making all sorts of warning noises so I went outside. Then I saw something like this happen to a random black cat.

These cheeky little bastards

They are very smart so I like them.
But oh boy they are great at trolling

Hat collecting barred owl has joggers on edge in Oregon
http://www.grindtv.com/outdoor/nature/post/barred-owl-joggers-edge-oregon/

"The first documented attack was in mid-January. Tom Jaecks was jogging in Bush’s Pasture Park just after 5 a.m. when he felt a sharp jab to the neck.

The cap was lifted swiftly from his head and Jaecks, a 58-year-old surgeon, stood dazed and in pain, wondering if he might be suffering from a stroke or aneurysm.

“It was like a huge electric shock ran through my body, but also like I got hit in the head with a two-by-four all at the same time” Jaecks told the Statesman-Journal. “Or maybe a strike of lightning.”

I find the Tarantula Eagle wasp a pretty fascinating predator. A huge blue-black wasp with rust-colored wings that hunts and paralyzes tarantula, drags them to its lair, lays eggs in them, and has its larvae eat the spiders slowly from the inside, carefully avoiding arteries and vital organs to extend the spider's life as a living cocoon. Besides hunting spiders it loves intoxicating fruit and is considered as having nature's second most painful insect bite.

Want to move to Socotra (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Socotra) and become a caveman in the alien environment. It has some of the most unique flora and fauna on the planet, it's one the same level as extremely isolated Pacific islands like the Hawaiian and Galapagos chains. It's one of the most isolated islands formed from a continental land mass. Hawaii and many other Pacific islands were formed by sea floor volcanoes that rose above the ocean surface. Socotra is a chunk of mainland continent that drifted off a couple hundred million years ago and did its own thing. Most island chains overflow with unique endemic (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Endemism) species. Socotra is unique even among isolated island chains. It has been described as "the most alien-looking place on Earth."

Botanical field surveys led by the Centre for Middle Eastern Plants (part of the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh) indicate that 307 out of the 825 (37%) plant species on Socotra are endemic, i.e., they are found nowhere else on Earth. It is unique, strange, and haunting. Imagine being the first human to set foot here - the landscape looks like something out of a fairy tale.

Here's some other cool shit for you islomaniacs out there. Dryococelus australis (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dryococelus_australis), a stick insect commonly known as the tree lobster, was thought to be extinct since the 1920s. Invasive rats decimated the population. In 2001 a relict (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Relict) population of the strange creature was found on a tiny spit of land. Read more about its re-discovery here (http://www.npr.org/sections/krulwich/2012/02/24/147367644/six-legged-giant-finds-secret-hideaway-hides-for-80-years). These little fuckers were declared extinct for almost 100 years, then some dude found them on the shittiest most inhospitable island you can imagine.

Next time: motherfuckin' Cambrian era sea creatures. You think there were some fucked up dinosaurs out there? Wait til you see these weird-ass fuckers. Many of them were among the first multi-cellular organisms, and they diverged from our human family tree more than 500 million years ago (before mice, before birds, before reptiles, before amphibians). They have bizarre body plans that resemble no living creature today. Perhaps even more interesting are the descendants of these ancient clades that still exist today. They must be doing something right, since they have existed for magnitudes longer (550,000,000 vs 50,000) longer than the Homo sapiens lineage.

Y'all know that sharks and crocodiles have  lived unchanged since before the dinosaurs. They survived the Cretaceous Extinction Event 65 million years ago, and dominated food chains for millions of years before that. But we can dig deeper. Next time, we will go back to an era before dinosaurs and crocodiles and sharks were a twinkle in their mommy's eye. The further back you go, the more fucked up and alien things become. We goin' full alien next post.

Dat some luna moth (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Actias_luna). One of the largest moths on the continent. I can one-up you though, when I was in 5th grade my dad found a cecropia moth (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hyalophora_cecropia) on a building at work. He brought it home in a cardboard box and I got to take it to school and show my class. They are THE largest north american moth.

Last summer I was picking some apples and came across a robin moth caterpillar in its fourth instar. It was already nearly 3 inches long and it wasn't even close to fall. Would hate to see one of those guys right before cocoon-making time.
