Title: Nostalgia! Games of our Past!
Post by: Tom Cruise on March 26, 2014, 07:24:31 pm
So I think one of the best feelings in the world is nostalgia. Being a gamer that can be many, many great games and memories. This thread doesn't have to be necessarily about the oldest thing you remember playing, but rather the one you enjoyed the most. For example my "golden age" of gaming was probably with the PS2. Now I could say tons of other games on tons of consoles and PC (Im pretty much a PC mainly kind of guy now). Like back in the day when I first started PC gaming, it was on Age of Empires 2: Age of Kings, and Rome: Total war. But the best time for me, like I said, the "golden age" was for the PS2. So please share your childhood with me, and relive some of these great games and memories with me!

I actually have a PS2. I wanted to acquire one and a bunch of old games just to relive all of the great games I played as a wee sperg lord. So I did. Here are some games that I currently own and some games I will be getting soon.

Games I currently own:
(click to show/hide)

Games I will be getting at some point (hopefully)

(click to show/hide)

Now there are a few exceptions on games that I really love, and played that shit out of when I was a kid, but got them for something else. Two examples are the Jak and Daxters series as well as the Ratchet and Clank series. Me and my friend got the HD remakes of the first three games for each series.

Here they be.

So many it'd be impossible for me to even give you a break down of the old school games I used to enjoy playing, but I'll give you a sampling

NES games (there's probably 50 I love, here's a few):

Super C
(click to show/hide)

Tecmo Bowl
(click to show/hide)

Rush'n Attack (aka Russian Attack!)
(click to show/hide)

Jackal
(click to show/hide)

Ikari Warriors
(click to show/hide)

Gun Smoke
(click to show/hide)

Mega Man 2
(click to show/hide)

Sega:

Jungle Strike
(click to show/hide)

Madden 94
(click to show/hide)

ToeJam & Earl
(click to show/hide)

Skitchin
(click to show/hide)

Pitfall: The Mayan Adventure
(click to show/hide)

Sonic the Hedgehog 2
(click to show/hide)

Golden Axe
(click to show/hide)

Zombies Ate My Neighbors
(click to show/hide)

NBA Jam
(click to show/hide)

Super Street Fighter II Turbo
(click to show/hide)

Streets of Rage
(click to show/hide)

NHL 95
(click to show/hide)

Playstation:

Resident Evil
(click to show/hide)

Clock Tower
(click to show/hide)

Metal Gear Solid
(click to show/hide)

Gran Turismo 2
(click to show/hide)

Grand Theft Auto 2
(click to show/hide)

Command & Conquer: Red Alert
(click to show/hide)

Games like San Andreas for PS2 are still always going to be some of my favorites.   I can honestly say that at the time of me playing any game that had been released up to any point when I'm playing a game, San Andreas was my favorite game ever.  So many nostalgic things about the game, and time of my life.  Put so much time into that game it's ridiculous.  Even played the Cops n Robbers mod for SA on my computer years and years after playing the game on PS2.

Then there's games on my PC from the late 90s and early 2000s I love.  Such as Ultima Online, the first Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six game (spending so much time prepping your team to go to check points and do certain things, only to have one get fucked and have to go back and modify it).  By far the most enjoyment I got from a game was Half-Life and all the free mods that I got to play because of it, most notably team fortress classic being my first baby, and then Counter-Strike being my next (but also games like Firearms, FrontLine Force, Day of Defeat, Insurgency mod, Pirates Vikings and Knights, Opposing Force CTF, the list goes on and on).

Zaxxon: First "3D" game that I saw come out.
(click to show/hide)

Robotron: 2 joysticks? 8 directions to move? 8 firing directions?? = Mind Blown
(click to show/hide)

Defender: Flying a spaceship with awesome firepower, all while saving humankind from alien abduction with the map bigger than the screen and a mini-map? ZOMG!
(click to show/hide)

Tempest: Geometric shaped maps with weird enemies in weirder shapes climbing up from the bottom of the geometric map like hellspawn bent on destroying you and your control is a flywheel like spinning knob with a fire button? Who comes up with this awesome shit??
(click to show/hide)

Galaxian and Galaga: And of course the first games that I made it past level 255 and caused the machine to freak out when it tried to go past the largest number that an 8 bit machine could handle, causing it to reboot but still keep my high score! Woo!
(click to show/hide)

I don't think that modern hardware has made any games better than these. Games nowadays are just different with more "realistic" graphics and a different idea of what is fun. But the gameplay of these old arcade classics was lost somewhere in the last 3 decades. I would like to have an arcade room in my house with cabinets that can choose between various old school games. I miss them

Those were great games! I remember Rainbow Six too, it was amazing how you could spend like half an hour prepping that team, just so that one group would end up failing at first door and got everyone killed.  :D

My golden age of gaming was around early 2000s too. Baldur's Gate 2, Nwn1, AoW:SM, Halo, CS:S, DoD:S...

But here's some of my favorites before that time:

Haha pipe game and ski-free, nice!

Forgot to include Wolfenstein (my first PC game, besides maybe some IBM computer games we had).   Age of Empires games, or even Sim City 2000.

In the 80s at school we had Apple computers (believe they were IIe) and loved playing The Oregon Trail, and games like O'Dell Lake, Murphy's Minerals, and some other classics.

Well does anyone actually still play these games? Cause like I said I bought a PS2 about a year ago and got a bunch of those games and still plan on buying some. Whether you have the actually consoles and old games themselves, or remakes, or emulations, idk, what errbody be doing?

Oh, man. Here's some games that I had countless hours of fun on. I wasn't allowed to play anything with violence or magic, so part of the experience was obtaining these games and playing them secretly. I can barely remember the first games I played- things like Electro Man and Jack the Jackrabbit. There was some top down rpg or other that had a hammer in the title screen that I remember fondly. Never could figure out what it was called.

I knew every single NFS II map by rote, and it was probably the first game that really turned me on to multiplayer.

Descent was the first thing I played in multiplayer, though we never quite knew what we were doing- this continued to be a theme in my childhood.

We saw the older kids playing Command & Conquer, but the first RTS I really got into was Red Alert, though Starcraft soon beat it out.

Baldur's Gate was probably the single most influential game of my childhood. It led me circuitously to RuneScape and Tibia.

visitors can't see pics , please register or login

Heroes of Might and Magic. We'd pretend we just played board games at sleepovers. In truth, we played a lot of the Heroes series.

visitors can't see pics , please register or login

We'd played some Quake, but THIS is probably what sold first person shooters to me.

visitors can't see pics , please register or login

Team Apache. Such a sense of accomplishment from simply figuring out how to land.

Yeah, Furcadia introduced me to a world that is probably responsible for the furry in me. Also, first time I encountered eRP. It was traumatic.

I was too young, and dumb, to understand Betrayal at Krondor and most RPGs were way over my head because I never read anything or paid attention.

I had about 20 of those "50+ games in 1" CDs.

"Shareware" was great. Came with PC magazine and such and it was always the first full "episode" of things like Shadow Warrior, Duke Nukem 3D, Doom, Wolfenstein etc.

First games I played were on a TRS-80 -- Pacman, Frogger, etc. Never really was a console guy, played DOS games growing up (X-Wing, Star Wars Chess, Corridor 7, Wolfenstein3D, SEAL Team). I'm only 24 but I got into at a young age. Didn't become a proper nurd until Half-Life/Counter Strike/Day of Defeat when I was like 12.

There was a point that crossed a line where consoles were as good or better than arcade games. I feel sad that the arcade didn't maintain that edge over anything you can do at home and it looks like most of you were born after that time. Now arcades are like the carnival rides that pop up in mall parking lots. People still go to them, but they are sad shadows of their former selves.
But I can still remember the golden days

You can buy an arcade game machine that is "generic" (i.e. has the screen, and has a joy stick with buttons) and you can put a computer in it that has 100s or 1000s of arcade game ROMs.  My old work had one in our break room.  You will likely want to find an arcade machine that has at least 3 buttons though for each joystick.  I don't know the specifics behind how it worked, but I imagine it can't be too hard to find information online about it.

The late 80s and early 90s are when I was exposed to arcade games, and the consoles were already starting to play the same games at this time (the arcades still had better graphics, but almost all these games were on consoles at the same time, or shortly thereafter).  Also having to put in money every time you died was not as forgiving as starting over for free on a console.  Some of my favorite arcade games I remember though, were:

Even up til the late 90s or even possibly early 2000s they were still coming up with good shooting arcade games (like Big Buck Hunter, and these games below I loved like Time Crisis and the sequels, Silent Scope).  A local pool hall had an old school shooting game with 2 plastic pistols that just featured certain games of skill, I don't even know what the name of it was.  And I was playing Golden Tee arcade game from probably 2001'ish up until close to 2010.

Silent Scope is one of those games that consoles still can't touch.

Agreed, same with Big Buck Hunter, or even a game like Golden Tee (which I still love).  Silent Scope was probably my favorite arcade game I ever played...time crisis games were really fun too (and I haven't seen a good replica on a home console/system).

I suppose you could even say games that have a motorcycle type of thing you sit on and race (and lean side to side) aren't easily replicable on a console, but that's not really my cup of tea (nor do I think they are really that great).

I remember a giant Jurassic Park shooter where you sit down and the whole thing shakes.

I could never afford to play that one more than once.
