Title: Anyone musically/lyrically talented w/ access to decent recording equipment?
Post by: Jeade on March 06, 2014, 05:24:18 am
A few of us in the cRPG community have taken up the task of collaborating together on an original song (cRPG related of course).
It's just a few NA guys at the moment, but I'd like to extend the offer to you EU guys as well!

I'm doing about a third of the recording myself and have a couple short demo tracks put together using Audacity please don't make fun of me it's all I have

Perhaps you don't play an instrument or you can't write for shit (like me) but one of your clan/faction-mates does, send him here! I'd love to see this get a bunch of people involved.
So, if you or a friend or you and a friend want to get involved, send me a message!
I'll link you the track in its current stages, so long as it doesn't get passed around or posted anywhere.
We'd all like it to be kept mostly under the radar until we think we've finished with it.

Thanks!

Any info about the style and genre? What instruments are you planning to add to the mix?

I could be interested in recording couple guitar tracks for you if needed . Maybe even some help with mixing and mastering if you don't have better people to do it...

Hrm. Good question about the style bit. I'd say it's following an indie folk trend? Sounds weird but I think it works.
I've been mixing the demo stuff in Audacity, so if you have a better way of doing it, you're more than welcome if you want to take up that task. haha.
I'll send you a link to it. Check your messages and let me know!

I got a Standup bass and I can play it but it's in California and I'm in Hawaii now. :(

Shame I love good folk/bluegrass music.

I hope to see the fruits of yer collaborations soon! post links

Okay I'll check it out and think about it!

Would be a good idea to set up IRC channel for this project. Easy way to exchange ideas and discuss stuff if everybody is on the same channel

We've just been using Steam chat but yeah, that could work. I've never really used IRC, but I'm open to that for sure.

I'd love to use it but I doubt my poor old PC could handle even the shiny interface. haha

Cubase still works wonders on intel  machines.

I probably could help with the drums part, but currently it's hard for me to get a place for capture on my acoustic drum-set (mic'ing drums is a fucking pain). Probably using the electronic drum-set would be easier at this stage.

Anyway good luck. :)

http://www.image-line.com/flstudio/ (http://www.image-line.com/flstudio/) is easy to use , i used audacity only for pitch/volume and cut options but if you want to control every single aspect of the song you need a software like that.

HAHAH, I think we are not spending 700 bucks on this project :D. And I would rather use Cubase if I had the money to buy such software.
http://www.steinberg.net/en/products/cubase/start.html

Pirating it is not an option in this case...

I use this for recording an putting the tracks together http://www.kreatives.org/kristal/. For sound editing I use Audacity because it has pretty good variety of stuff if you know what you're doing.

Shut up Jeade you have some pretty neat original stuff.

If I were to make a 12 track album with only original work, at my current rate, it would take me 12 years to produce something.
This would make me something like 80% less productive than U2, however, this means nothing because U2.
But thanks, I do appreciate it, Teeth. :3

Countless talent coordinators and not one has produced a lead to a musician with such aptitude.
Please... please, we need you, Porthos.

Unfortunately today I've got a cold sores. My lip's condition is so bad, that it is now impossible for me to use it in my daily professional manner as I usually do. I think the recovery may take a long time, so I'd suggest you to move ahead without me. I know, it is a big disaster, but yet I can't help you at all. Good luck!

I'm producing progressive - trance up to techno and more on a DAW called Fruity Loops for 7 years now , i can also make a good use of Logics 9. Maybe my genres don't fit to your expectations :) , nevertheless i still can play piano and have many different synths in my range, moreover i love to write chords, whatever the genre. I can also help you with the mixdown/mastering part of your tracks. I have some good hardware at my disposition so feel free to ask if you think that i can help you. (PM preferred)

Awesome!
While trance and techno is totally, totally different than what we've got so far, maybe this will turn into some weird experimental song.
I'll send you a PM with the links and all! We could probably use some help mixing and mastering at the very least!

I can play the piano, guitar, and violin fairly well, and I have a decent knowledge of music theory. I don't know much about music software and all I have to record is a crappy microphone. Maybe I can help? If not that's ok

I play electric bass but don't have any gear to get it on my computer. I'd still like to see what you have so far if you care to share :)

Audacity is nice for quick edits, but i feel like it's the mspaint of audio software. I haven't ever done anything using multiple tracks with it.

Bass usually sounds fine even if you use direct line in method. You don't necessarily need much gear to record it :)

I could probably pick something up without breaking the bank but right now my only way of recording anything to my computer is a 5 dollar mic for teamspeak. I could record to casette and mail that to Jeade in the meantime... :P

I may add harmonies or even write a chorus (don't quote me on this) but I don't wanna step on any toes. :3

Chosen1, Witchcraft, absolutely!
SP1N, don't even worry about stepping on toes. We totally need help with lyrics. That's the part we really need help with first and foremost (I think).
The whole point of this thread was to turn this into a collaboration, and I fully expect this to get a little too ridiculous by the end.
Should be a good time! I'll send you all a message with links and whatnot!

Also, Witchcraft, if you mail me a cassette recording, I'd then have to go browse thrift stores until I found something ancient enough to play a cassette.
I'll side with Odin and suggest you try the direct line. Only if you want to though!

Yeah and since you play electric bass I assume you have an amp. Then I'm assuming that amp has a headphone output. That way you can plug your bass amp directly from the headphone out ---> your PC's soundcard input. You can also use some fx pedals to do the same thing (if you have them).

You just have to learn to adjust the levels correctly (loudness and EQ) so the sound doesn't come in too loud or too silent.

If Audacity is the mspaint of DAW's, I've found the winrar . Unlimited full version trial "for 2 months" :P. Enjoy http://www.reaper.fm/index.php

Of course if you happen to like the Reaper, it's cheap to license. 60 bucks is a fucking bargain if this DAW is as good as everyone says. I just found it yesterday so I don't know if it is. I'm going to find out tho because Kristal audio engine crashed on me the last fucking time (and I guess their last update was released in 2004 lol).

Do you have a harmonica in C#?

Planning on re-recording everything and getting new links and stuff to everyone whose involved themselves pretty soon.
I've had a ton of reading to do. I guess they're piling everything on before spring break. :\

You're the one that plays mandolin right? I play a bit of hammerclaw banjo. Let's do this. I have an SM57 and a simple ADC preamp to my computer that I use for all mic purposes.

Nah, I'm a standard guitarist like everyone else. haha
Thalion from WFA (WoM or something now) plays mandolin.
I'll send you the links to what we have so far.

Also, Jona has graciously donated 50GBs of dropbox space for us, so that should help out once we get this show on the road.

I also have a Martin 00015m but you probably have enough guitars lined up already  I have my own NAS that I don't use much.. it has 1TB of unused space if need be so space shouldn't be an issue (though my upload rate is probably less than ideal) :P

Your herpes scared everyone away.

Doesn't matter if you already have them, you dirty slut.

Nah, I've been all over the states since my summer break started.
Really, I've just been a bit lazy. And I don't have a quiet place to re-record everything.

I know Thalion is still up for mandolin.
Hopefully we can convince Armpit to do another drum track for us in the near future, too.
Zaal was going to do some production work on it, but I'll have to see if Jona still has the 50gb of dropbox space available.

The biggest setback at the moment is not having lyrics.
We need talented (heh) writers for this masterpiece! And I can't write for shit.
