Post by: Fredom on January 30, 2014, 09:41:33 pm
Hello guys, I need your help.
School is fucked... Because of cRPG.
When I play cRPG and GTX coz a fucking noob nudged and stabbed me, I feel like playing something else but when I return to my desctop, I rejoin crpg because I do not dind a game I could play.
Any1 here could tell me how I could play less cRPG or get away from it for a bit?
PS: I got many good other games which just wait to get played like the Total Wars but cRPG keeps me away from them...
PS2: I do not have looms.

Get Friends, go Party, make out with girls (or boys) and enjoy your life. There is so much more to discover outside of this lame visual world.

Dont forget that cRPG will not fulfill your dreams (If you dont have dreams, then you should create some as soon as possible), it is your real Life what you have to master.
It doesnt help you at all when you are the best player in cRPG. Better concentrate on doing the best out of your life and when you think you got something that its worth working for, then you can come here and enjoy some cRPG, but dont play it all day long or your dreams will fly away and you will neglect all your friend from real Life that can help you reach anything.

Just go a step back and stop caring about cRPG. Playing is for spare time, not to fuck your RL up.
Always remember that you miss nothing if you don't play, this game is repetitive as fuck.

You can either do your homework and become a boring lawyer, or you can play cRPG and become a famous weapon master. The choice is obvious.

I have dreams etc it's just that cRPG costs me way too much time, other games should be played as well but cRPG keeps me away from them. :/

Start by getting other hobbies like fitness, plan in daily time to study and study at a friend's house, in the library or under your parents' nose.

For me it's also the only reason that I managed to study for these exams, my gf slept over all month and we studied together. Last year I played 24/7 and didn't even go to any of my exams in january. Did only one single exam in june and one in tuhe third period. Shit was not fun, but like you I couldn't stop even though I hated myself for being so stupid.
Also go ask for help at the psych of your school/university. It can only help.

No probs xD I think I probably was a bit unclear... Well I did invest tooooo many hours in a single game... I am studying etc but there is not enough time for studying cRPG AND/OR another game/s. So if I would.play less cRPG I'd have more time to workout, study and/or play other games.

There is a big difference between hobbies that keep you in good shape and busy and hobbies that boost your self esteem because you make progress and become a better person, both inside and outside.
Yes, I'm talking about lifting or atleast advanced calisthenics where you will see progress where there never was any and your confidence will go sky high.

Actually I don't :)
I used to do gymnastics so decided to give 'overcoming gravity' a try.

Not shitting you, you might not look that much bigger but adding some more weight or moving up to a little harder progression, it's awesome. It boosted my confidence so much I basically went feom a guy scared to even talk to girls on parties to one who had the girls begging for attention (little overstatement, but basically that's how it felt).

Lolwat, so this part was referring to lifting? Surely lifting is exactly the type of thing that falls under the hobbies that keep you in good shape and busy? Please explain to me how lifting makes you a better person.

As someone who is a lazy fuck without any ambition or dreams or any drive whatsoever I can tell you that it is probably not cRPG keeping you from doing important shit. I have probably been technically addicted to cRPG for quite a while and it was my go to procrastination device whenever I had to do something I dislike. Now I can't be arsed to play at all anymore, but half a dozen other procrastination devices have taken its place and I still can't be arsed to do anything important. Now my study isn't suffering that much from it because I am brilliant, but I do feel like I could be doing a lot more. If you actually have problems doing an education because of being a lazy bum you should probably try things like making to-do lists everyday which you have to finish before doing anything else, or set time clocks to create time for cRPG and for other stuff. Tell me if any of that works, because I couldn't be arsed to do anything like that.

get a better hobby with which you can spend your freetime, drawing, producing music, sports, etc...

dun worry, we´ll all be in mab2 again

I'm not talking about saving the world from getting destroyed by humans or something. But yes, setting yourself a goal and actually making it for the first time in your life can fix your problem atleast.

It all comes down to this:

Some of us needs these dudes often and cant handle longterm waiting (hard work, longterm goals etc) to get them. Teeth is smart, he thinks he can do much better but he doesnt get these "guys" in the picture to shower his brain when he tries, so he goes back to quickfixes that gives him what he needs "he cant be arsed" as he says - however fast achievements and small almost constant "showers" is what keeps him running. I have the same setup, I use to call it a problem but I dont anymore. I excell in critical situations that needs rapid actions, or new thinking or ideas to solve problems - but "I cant be arsed" to execute them  thats for the other type to do. I cant do longterm jobs, I cant "carry" a business for a long time - but I can start shit up or help other people get started or solve problems when they do.

I think both types are needed in society

If you reward yourself to much to often it can "drain" the resources of Dopamin and it will be hard to recover or you may even need meds to cope. It may lead to a state that gives you these issues:

I am not claiming I know all this by heart, I have read some about it and since I have been working with people that has different kinds of addictions I sort of picked it up along the way. Food, games, nicotine, sex, drugs - all are nice if used with balance.

Someone perhaps studying these things that can elaborate the shit I just posted? Would be fun

I am not very found of the 12-step program, allthough it ofc helps some people I found other programs more effective for most clients

Damn that sounds like me, altough I'm kinda recovering. I can't enjoy video games any more tough, instead I've started to enjoy social interactions, cleaning, cooking, working out, working in general and stuff like that.

get a gym pass dude :P

(seriously, lifting solves everything)

edit: oh i see saxon already suggested this. well, it's sage advice. lifting solves everything.

it is amazing how much your confidence goes up after you've been lifting for a few months/years, and you play games less (not to stop altogether! :D ), gives you an outlet for frustration you might otherwise take out on crpg

I'm having a personal trainer and train with him every saturday. But I will not get a pass for gym, calisthenics is better and oh, street workout ftw <3 Got a street workout park 30 min away from me in another part of my city. That's good because you can do good shit without paying just a single dollar.

Holy fuck I didn't think anyone had it that bad! I mean I miss lectures but never exams :o

well that's good, set an alarm for yourself for about 9pm so you turn your PC off at this point, make sure you get up by at the latest 9 30am every day and do at least 1 productive thing in a day (work out, read a book), just don't spend too much time on crpg is what i'm saying :P

i only say lifting because i used to be really heavily addicted to games a few years ago, found lifting a really good way to spend my time more productively

Always click the folder that has the truth in it's name. Don't lie to yourself.

Create a folder on your desktop and call it 'free time', then create another folder in it and call it 'I've been doing school stuff today' and 'I haven't done anything for school/studies yet'. In 'I've been doing school stuff today' place a folder with the time periods like: 'It's past 17:00 and before 23' and 'it's other time'. In 'it's other time' place a not for yourself 'Go do something else', there is always something to be done! Book to read or dishes to wash or sth. On the other hand in 'It's past 17:00 and before 23' you should place your cRPG launcher.

You should be a parent to yourself who is guiding you and a kid who is guided and can have a reward when job is done. Be both to yourself and your selfcontrol is k!

I placed there the time-factor because often when you get mad in cRPG whole rest of your day is fucked. You just want to make them ranged pay for this or instantly not give a fuck about anything. That's why if you don't want your whole day to be wasted, you should play in the afternoons & evenings.

It worked for me for quite a while but my studies keep my lifestyle chaotic. Eating dinner in the middle of the night, going to bed in the morning, waking up in the evening, not eating for quite a lot of time.

Had the same problem. Went on IRC and got the devs to lock my account until exams were over.

Also, I have a lot of fun with the game now because I refuse to take it seriously anymore. Problem for me was the grind. That was addicting to me. Reason yourself out of *needing* heirlooms, retiring and generally leveling up.

If anything, just play with a skip the fun, and it'll become just another game.

Also, play the game only with friends/socially, and not by your damned self. It's like drinking alone behind a closed door. No matter what you tell yourself "it's just a game," it's still an addiction and a problem.

Good luck, you fucking nerd.

I wonder why nobody posted that before:

Btw I believe the one I should be talking about with this bodybag business is Jarlek, not Razer. You 13 year olds confuse me.

my "Id" is about 3 or 4 times larger than my SuperEgo, but I've been working on that my whole life.  Getting better lately, but it's not fun.

This is my Id:

I always believed doing things that make you happy and finding enjoyment out of life is the "meaning" of life.  I know it is selfish, but I believe it.

Pretty much sums up my view on life :D ( And I do my best to avoid upsetting other people, as long as they are friendly )

Not even sure what's going on in this thread, but i guess if it reached the point of sharing our "life philosophies", i can join the fun  8-)

Yeah I didn't say that, but I also try to avoid harshing anyone else's mellow if I can while I'm trying to find happiness.  I try not to find happiness for myself at the expense of others (especially if it's avoidable).

Also dat pic is great

Also ironically just found this pic on the internet (which seems to sum up life pretty well), just stumbled on it while searching for your pussy lyrics in your sig online:

Greetings , this might not help you , but i'd like to take some time for you and share my own experience of quitting the ladder with you dude , who knows maybe it could have some positive effect !

So listen,  I stopped that game like 5 months ago, planned this action during the whole summer where i was completely stuck to strat and missing a lot of working days in the shop where i work at (on free times) ,as i was also playing late-night NA battles sometimes and so waking up at really early hours ( was hard to explain it to my boss , and so i got severely menaced of being fired). Then Had such sick-ass holidays when i was far away from my computer , that when i got back home i already felt less attracted towards the game (it was the right time to move forward, until i'd fall into that addiction engine back again) , and then some other elements made me completely quitting it , as my gf and my mum for instance who really started to nag me about this , and so pushed me to make this decision . In the meanwhile i achieved some unexpected success in music (which is so far one of my greatest escape to  this world.) that completely made me thinking about the use of my free-time. Moreover my studies are now a way tougher than what it used to be, playing crpg now would have made me running towards a complete failure according to the time i was dedicating to it !. So i' gotta say that i chose a great timing.

ABOUT THE ACTION :
I just uninstalled crpg with warband and gave all my virtual worthing objects away (looms etc). Though the last act isn't that useful as i could borrow all the gear that i want from my clan's armory if i feel like getting back, but at least it felt like an achievement a step towards my separation and moreover i made some nice ppl a bit happier for a while through that.

CONCLUSION:
Had a great time in this mod, missed a lot of things cuz of it , but still it was all good , and i had the luck to meet some really awesome ppl , in my strat faction for instance , and so that's also why i still and i will play for them through my internet browser and chill when possible on TS with them to not especially speak about the game but just life and the way it's going.
PS : I have hundreds of games too , and i can assert you that i wasn't playing them at all, crpg was my only focus , and so stopping it , almost meant to me , the end of gaming at 99%

My advice ?
World is full of shit and also full of great stuff , the first quest is to find addictions in different domaines than videogames, it ain't easy but when you're done with it , it could really start to help you, second point is the ppl around , interact with them , dig further in your relationships and also spend more time with your family, if you have this luck , if they have a least of conscience they may help you a lot to come over this challenge mate , last point , when you do it (leaving the game) , do it seriously , strike hard , give all your looms away , get rid of all the potential stuff that could make you going back to the game , take it as a challenge, for example, each time i'm tempted to get back to the game , i remember Jarlek's quote about the complexity of leaving cRPG , and then i say to myself , 'You ain't gonna give reason to this dirty Norsk asshole (love ya) ' and hell it feeds me with a lot of motivation , and now by the time i'm getting more and more distant to the game , and time after time getting rid of the last  ashes that could bring me back to the game.

NB :BE careful crpg is an addiction for sure, that makes you less productive , but it ain't the only , some around are even worse ( , phone, girl , drug, alcohol ,  social networks checking obsession) i experienced all of those and i can tell you that they 're a way harder to get rid off , and are an evil pain in the ass for your productivity. winning against cRPG would be a first victory but you'll face tougher for sure. By the way you can still play cRPG while doing a lot of other things and focusing on your core life's stuff (studies, social etc) , though that would mean that you'd play iy with something called "moderation" ..."moderation" is something i never got , it's out of my range ( too hard !!)

Good luck m8, cheers from France.  Hope you'll take time to read this post properly as i did to write it for you.

I do not mean to be rude.

But am I the only one who thinks it is akward that a bounch of nerds (myself included) are giving eachother advice on how not to be addicted to a game?

It sort of resembels an AA meating; people who all have (or had have) the same problem helping eachother out :D

Anyway, nice to see some "love" and caring in this community for a change :D

I'm still amazed by the fact that people could be addicted to this game especially after playing it for so long. Sure I've played it alot but mostly when I have nothing to do, and I've barely enjoyed playing it.

If you're having issues with grades in school don't blame games. It's your fault. Need to work on your motivation.

Of course I have taken the time to read your advices! I am very thankful that you have spent so much time 'for me' and I think.I'll try it when my exams are starting again. As you so said I think playing games is not a real problem, being able to control the time you spend on them is one. Again thanks for your amazing text.

LoL is fun, if he enjoys it let him do it, noone is getting hurt by it and its a pretty good game once you get into it. DOTA is also a good game, not saying anything about it, and since you can play LOL entirely for free (only advantage to paying is looking cool) it is a nice way to hang out with friends. I play LoL with my RL friends, my GF, my brother and such, and once you manage to reduce the toxicity (people play the Blame Flame Game too much in it, but you must remind them: Its a game, were friends, why you are yelling at each other) its a nice way to spend time.
