Title: See where this quiz thinks you're from (based on linguistics)
Post by: CrazyCracka420 on December 31, 2013, 04:58:11 pm
http://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2013/12/20/sunday-review/dialect-quiz-map.html

Would be cool to see the Euro's take the quiz too, seems to be pretty accurate for 'muricans.

It pegged me 100% accurately (I'm from Minneapolis/St Paul)

Taking it now :D some of the questions are hard to answer. you have a word for the day before halloween? O.o and stuff like drive through liquor store :D and you apparently have names for bits of grass next to a road etc that ive never thought of or heard of, roads are different names but lets see what it says.

What do you call it when rain falls while the sun is shining?
Answers

Makes sense it would see you being from that area of the the US if you're from England.  I've heard people speak who grew up in NY, but moved to Boston for years, come to where I live and they sound like they are English :P

Yeah some of the questions are weird.  I've never heard of a drive through liquor store, and we don't have a name for the day before halloween where I'm from.  In a lot of places in the country on a suburban street, it will be road, then a strip of grass, then a sidewalk, and then the grass in the main part of your yard.  We never had a name for that little strip of grass.

The first 15 or 30 feet in your yard (at least in the state I live in) is called the easement, and the city technically owns it, even if you are responsible for the upkeep.

Some of the possible answers they had were definitely rofl worthy.

I pronounce all 3 the same, I believe the answer that I choose is what the majority of the US did (most of the country was red)

I'm from North Carolina according to this test. Greensboro to be more precise but pretty much the whole area was dark red.

I can see how Mary and Merry can sound similar but Marry and Mary? :D Interesting how it varies so much in one country let alone across the pond

How do you pronounce Marry?  Is the vowel the same way you'd pronounce something like "tar"?

From Kent England :P

I got exactly the same, from Essex, http://nyti.ms/KiZo4E.

I did another test like this a while ago and it had the same result, it makes sense considering the British colonies were all up the east coast and populated by the English. The further you go west, the further you go into a mish mash of dialects and accents crafted from all kinds of europeans mixing with the British.

Made the test twice (to have some different questions). The one location that popped up twice was Santa Clarita, CA.

Doesn't make much sense if you're not a native speaker of course, but it's really funny and some of the words are really interesting (a drive-through liquor store? I still can't believe it)

Indeed. On the other hand, selling alcohol at gas stations (and I'm not talking of beer) is not that much of a difference...

get out of my state!

mine was accurate to a degree, however my county in particular is rather rural, and has quite alot of similarities with the south.  Where as if you were to drive east or west, you would drive in to counties which are much closer to cities, and they end up having such talk.  My county is also very republican in a rather democratic state, though like i said that has more to do with the counties culture.  Its why my county was given the nickname Ceciltucky, rather then its original name of Cecil.

So in turn, i could see the inaccuracy coming through lol, but it was close enough, kind of funny though, considering most of those words were interchangeable, like lightning bug/firefly.  Also, really, nobody calls it sunshowers? or summershowers?  just us i guess lol.

My significant lifemate: http://nyti.ms/JsyabE lived here since age 1.

Also we don't have drive through liquor stores here. I was as surprised as you EU guys. Each state has its own alcohol laws.

It did get my city right, cool quiz.

This test is pretty stupid for people that don't have a mother language level in english. I absolutely had to answer "baguette" at some point.

I lost the image but I roughly had Wisconsin and New York blue.

It was odd to me when I went out west, they also sold liquor and beer in pharmacies.

My state also had some blue laws up until recently where we couldn't buy booze on Sundays or after 8pm, although we still can't buy it after 4pm. I found out yesterday I guess you still can't buy it on certain holidays.

Newark, Yonkers and Baltimore, wut?
Was expecting some combination of PA and MD cities

I'm from Baltimore, so I guess it's correct.
When I was young I spent a lot of time up in cape may, NJ, so I guess that's how Newark showed up?

Don't know where NY came from

Probelm was I used a lot of these terms interchangeably, and the quiz didn't let me select multiple answers.
I seem to pick up accents and dialects quickly

I'll give you a hint. I'm not south eastern.

It also picked those cities based off of questions that I couldn't answer...
