Title: Steam winter sale
Post by: Elmuri on December 19, 2013, 07:18:39 pm
From 19th of December to 3rd of January

The last sales just ended, the same games again and again. I'm not very excited at least, just waiting if the new AC would be 25 euros or less. Discuss.

CS:GO super cheap, get it, if you still don't have it for whatever reason.

I have soooooo many games I still haven't gotten through yet. By the time I get around to some of these they'll be in the public domain

I don't know which is sadder, that there is nothing in the Steam sale I actually want to buy that I've seen recently or that I shouldn't really buy anything anyway because the money I got left is for survival, i.e food and bills, fucking Christmas is expensive.

Any cRPG'ers up for some CS:GO matchmaking? I'm not that good but it's fun

I hope I'll get lucky and have a huge discount on Space Rangers HD.

it's only 20% so far, we'll see. 75% would be awesome.

Not too much excitement here either. Used to buy stuff at the sales cuz "cheap!" but only played a few of them actually. NOT ANYMORE STEAM!

Overplayed CS (1.6 mainly, Source just a bit) that I cba with GO...

Bulletstorm is on flash sale atm: http://store.steampowered.com/app/99810/ (http://store.steampowered.com/app/99810/) ~3 hours left

Hilarious game, truly loads of fun to play, the voice acting is especially fun, story isn't too bad either :D What more could you want.

100% recommendation.

Only on LAN parties.

I don't get this trend of calling a game dead if it doesn't hundreds of full servers, I've never had any trouble finding games on NS2.

is XCOM worth it for 10 bucks?(the base not the expansion?)
Title: Re: Steam winter sale
Post by: zagibu on December 21, 2013, 09:07:33 pm
Absolutely. I am a die-hard x-com classic fan (first three original games), and even I must admit it does many things right. It IS simplified compared to the originals, and it has a few problems with annoying enemy movement and spawn, but otherwise it's a lot of fun.
Title: Re: Steam winter sale
Post by: BASNAK on December 21, 2013, 10:33:02 pm
The game XCOM was all right. Campaign was interesting but those abductions become so boring and repetitive after a while it really put me off. Multiplayer wasn't too fun either. It's worth 10 dollars tho.
Title: Re: Steam winter sale
Post by: Leesin on December 21, 2013, 11:18:37 pm
You would be better off just playing the older games than buying the new Xcom game, it's pretty shite after playing for a few hours IMO. There is also an indie game being made called Xenonauts which aims to simply improve off of the original Xcom games whilst retaining all the decent features, something which the new Xcom game didn't do, I think you can get early access on Steam but I don't know the price.

Heard it's mediocre.

The fights are actually fun. Classic hexagon turn-based combat with nice effects on spells and stuff. Unfortunately you can't actually run around or anything but just hop from one location to the other... bummer really. You can't explore anything which wasn't evident when I checked all the trailer and stuff - at least those I found.

I enjoy it though cuz it's nice to have a game you can get in for half an hour and then just close it and be on your way. I kinda miss that with today's games: you can't just play for 10 minutes and stop w/o somehow missing out.

I wouldn't recommend to buy it tho - I enjoy it for very special reasons and probably barely anyone else will.
Title: Re: Steam winter sale
Post by: LordBerenger on December 26, 2013, 07:19:24 pm
I've picked up this so far.

Witcher 2
ARMA 3
ARMA 2
Tomb Raider (2013)
Rising Storm (RO2 Expansion)
Mass Effect 1
Mass Effect 2 (plus bought all DLC)
CS Source
Garry's Mod
Sleeping Dogs
Natural Selection 2
Battlefield 2

Also bought Crysis 3 from Origin.

Gifts: Dead Space 1
         Medal Of Honor 2010
         Burnout Legends

And thinking bout getting Day Z Standalone as my last game tho not sure yet. COD Ghosts is also tempting
Title: Re: Steam winter sale
Post by: Molly on December 26, 2013, 07:38:50 pm
Yea, I am still thinking about DayZ but from what I've heard it doesn't even sound that fun.

Rust on the other hand seems to be the better DayZ with building when it's finished.

Dont buy neither yet, wait for easter steam sales, until then both games will be 10x times better , if not complete, than they are now.

Never really played ARMA 2 before so ARMA 3 in Wasteland mode was basically this.

- Spawn with a crappy pistol
- Even on full servers you walk around for 2+ hours and find nobody and then get shot down because you have a crappy pistol vs their ARs.
- Weird overall

Also just got Anno2070

I have pretty much everything I want from Steam now

Wut, Wasteland is one of the mods where it's easy as shit to find ARs. You might want to take a look into cars. Not that that has anything to do with ARMA 3 itself.

I have yet to try Breaking Point and Wasteland. But the main reason I got the game was because of the life mods that were really fun in Arma 2. I made a couple of people buy Arma 3 to play the life mods but the mods ended up being extremly grindy and the map being huge and every server full with french moonspeaking twats. Now thats the mod related issues with the game.

The game related issues:

- All the random unpredictable death causes from glitches and vehicles breaking down for absolutely ridiculous reasons. Example: We drove a car, and a APC crashed into us and our car broke down and their APC was untouched - Fair enough. We later on get the same APC-type and crash into an ATV, and our APC completely breaks down, engine and wheels broken. ATV is unharmed and drives away. Vehicles simply break down very easy, which is an issue since Arma 2.

- There's no holstering pistols anymore. Which is very important in Life mods.

- Maybe it's only me but the performance is shit, some of my friends experience the same thing. I can max out many other games but Arma 3 on lowest graphics I have 30 fps and it feels very unsmooth.

- The animations haven't really been improved that much, you still do retarded things like holding invisible pistols and other things, and the movement feels very boxy.

Perhaps the mods will improve by time or more mods will come out. I never bought the Arma games to play them vanilla.

no comment on this one, never had something like that happen though

- There's no holstering pistols anymore. Which is very important in Life mods.

You could holster pistols in Arma 2? What exactly do you mean by holstering? Lowering your gun? Because you can do that (double CTRL)

- Maybe it's only me but the performance is shit, some of my friends experience the same thing. I can max out many other games but Arma 3 on lowest graphics I have 30 fps and it feels very unsmooth.

This is multiplayer yes? Multiplayer performance is largely up to how the mission is made (80% of wasteland missions have shit performance) and how the server is. Find a good mission on a good server and you won't have any FPS problems.

- The animations haven't really been improved that much, you still do retarded things like holding invisible pistols and other things, and the movement feels very boxy.

Invisible pistols never happened to me, not that I recall. This might be subjective, but movement feels tons better than Arma 2. A lot of people think it's much much smoother. Of course it's never going to be perfectly smooth because they want to keep some of the unsmoothness for dat realism feel.
Title: Re: Steam winter sale
Post by: BASNAK on December 26, 2013, 11:14:45 pm
Might have been a little harsh comment when I said nothing has been improved, because it has, but not as much as I hoped for. We're just mostly annoyed over all the minor frustrations that added up after some days of playing the life mods, ARMA 2 life mods were hilarious to play and this was a huge letdown.

Currently downloading Breaking Point however, and will try Wasteland also. Not giving up on ARMA 3 yet.

Post by: Andswaru on December 26, 2013, 11:31:10 pm
Okay i find arma 3 to be an epic improvement on arma 2 in every sense possible. Play the single player demos thru, look at just the different the sitting/crouching options we have now for shooting. The whole experience is vastly smoother and makes you realise what pure **** dayz is compared to what it could of been, if its truely just a standalone version of the mod using the arma 2 engine.

Rekt,  You should have read the steam hub before buying it, the MP is just as bad as on Mortalkombat 9 (pc) aka unplayable laggy. Most people can't even find other players to play with and if they do, they get connection lost or play a super laggy unenjoyable game.

Yeah spec ops is a great SP game, dont even consider the MP though. Its a piece of BS stick on shovel ware.

Max payne is more of a film which occasionally asks you to play out a little bit. I think theres more interactivity in shouting at the projectionist at a cinema.

The only game mode that survived seems to be free mode, which can be fun for a few hours. If you know other people with the game however, you can organise cops & crooks games, which can be really fun.

If it was featured in ZeroPunctuation, you should probably not buy it. There are exceptions, though.

I like Dark Souls but for some reason after spending hours getting it to start I can't get over 30 fps (yes I have dsfix) and that kinda kills the game for me

Well, he kinda said in the review that SR4 reached the peak of sillyness which makes it a good game. And in his Top/Flops 5 of 2013 he nearly gave the top 1 to SR4. Considering I enjoyed the 3rd one... I would probably have fun with it.

Question is: is it worth 20€ to me? :P

Think about it in terms of what fraction of the playtime/price ratio of Warband SR4 will achieve at that price.

But let's not forget the elephant in the room HOW CAN YOU NOT LIKE DARK SOULS

Yea, decided to pass on Sr4 for now since I still have lots to play... I kinda wanna clean out my HDD first before taking on another "long" game.

And Dark Souls... well, it might be a good game if it wasn't just such a horrible, buggy, insufferable and infuriating bad bad bad bad bad fucking console port. That thing is seriously the worst console port I ever encountered and nothing is going to fix that.
I had all the fixes and tools on and it was still so crappy... beyond believing.

I actually have a hard time to understand how anyone can bash on EA, Ubi or w/e bad big publisher is targeted right now and at the same time actually like that piece of garbage!

I am playing Dark Souls with mouse and keyboard and still having a blast. I fall down legdes a lot due to poor aiming, but apart from that the locking system fixes most of the problems that come with an extremely hard to move camera. I don't like many action games these days but Dark Souls is just a brilliant game. I am curious what bothers you so much about the port Molly, because I don't see any considerable issues with it apart from the control issues which are completely fixed by using a controller. Suit yourself anyway, but Dark Souls is an amazingly well designed game, haven't seen such a good triple AAA game in forever. Which is also why nobody gives them shit for the very quick port. The game is just that good and people are just glad that they ported it, which they did as a favour.

Yeah, FROM soft never intended to do this port, and it shows, but it the end it has proven extremely beneficial to them. Demon's Soul's was already one of the best games of the PS3, ever. But it fell under the radar of too many PS3 owners. I think they realised the average console uneducated swine is simply too dumb to appreciate their games. Or maybe they simply are japanese and do not understand the concept of playing on a PC, who knows.

I got Dark Souls too, because everyone hyped it in these forums, but no matter which fixes I tried, I never got it to work okay with mouse and keyboard. Gonna give it another try with a gamepad eventually, but the 30 FPS lock kind of sucks, still.

I use an Xbox360 controller and play Dark Souls, didn't had any problems with it, worth getting the pad. Game is awesome, however, without guides or a person leading you by hand you're gonna have a hard time.
Unless, of course, you're lucky or you listen to the NPC's (the good ones)

Just one thing. Dark Souls is designed for 30 fps, if you lift the cap there will be glitches. Everything else in the fix works fine. You can play with 60 fps fix just make sure to disable it when you start to experience glitches. Glitches are rare but can be very annoying.

Sale was ok. Of course, I'm spoiled with Amazon sales in US dollars and Humble Bundle, Bundlestars and such. But the real reason why I didn't buy anything is, I don't play anything except cRPG. Why waste money now when I can do the same next winter.

Was thinking about Rust, but it's a current fad and I don't like that. So I'll skip it for now, hopefully won't completely die in next six months or so.

I can't get into the immersion of Rust...seems like a cool game, but it seems like you go from banging rocks with your fist and having no clothes, to other people running around with sileneced semi-automatic rifles.  it seems all over the place.

I don't see why people complain about Steam sales being bad - were there really any games you would've bought, but they weren't on sale?

I just feel like there haven't been many new games, that are worth buying...
Title: Re: Steam winter sale
Post by: Overdriven on January 04, 2014, 10:51:45 am
They aren't bad. They are very good. It's just most people have been on steam long enough to buy every game they actually want in one of the bazillion sales a year so now it's getting to the point where they may only see 1 or 2 games they even remotely like the look of during a sale.

I agree though that the issue is the quantity of good games being released rather than an issue with the sales themselves. But then there are usually only a few big games a year. People just expect more now they can download things instantly.

They do that every sale...

Usually the first sale isn't the best one so you can take a gamble and wait to see if later in the sale a game comes on at a better discount.
