The rest of the crew died, they found him whilst pulling the bodies from that boat.
I can imagine that this job isn't the most pleasant one. But having one of your "clients" grabbing you must be quite of an experience.

now we are talking about rescue swimmers/divers: The Guardian, one awesome movie, a bit the top gun of the coast guard.

I watched a full length video of it and i'm wondering why the divers sound like they're on helium when they speak!?

I remember reading in situations that cause the body stress and adrenaline is flowing that a person's voice generally gets higher the more "excitable" the situation becomes.

Heliox is a breathing gas composed of a mixture of helium (He) and oxygen (O2).
heliox is most likely to be used in deep commercial diving. It is also sometimes used by diving enthusiasts, particularly those using rebreathers, which conserve the breathing gas at depth much better than open circuit scuba.

Judging from the pictures the only black guy didn't die first in this movie.

Because at that depth they are breathing a mixture of oxygen and helium I believe, look it up.
I liked the part in the video where the South African guy on the support vessel is talking to the survivor:
"Whut waas yur rink?" (What's your rank?)
very squeeky "Chef sir"
"The cuk? dey always survive"
Made me chuckle and made me sad: this guy is having a joke to cheer up the survivor but also...his job is to pull dead bodies from ships, what a job...

I'm wondering now, 30m isn't that much, even I can swim that and more in apnea. Maybe he should have done that if of course there is a way to get out of the ship and also if he knows the actual depth.

u can swim 30 meters down in apnea? 30m is the height of an apartement, lel

I can do 2x 25m horizontally without any push in apnea without much preparation, and you can probably do the same. Apnea champions have techniques to extend the time they can survive consciously without air, like intensive breathing right before entering the water. As swimming up is not considerably harder than swimming horizontally (or even easier actually, depending on your body), 30 meters up doesn't sound like a challenge. The only real problem would be pressure.

at 30 meters you dont need any special mix of fancy gases

Yeah, if a/ he had made it out of an upside down ship in total darkness and b/ was a proffesional swimmer, he still would have drownd because the bends would have made him unable to swim as he went up
He was a fat nigerian cook. I doubt he has access to a depth pool and training to make sure he is always ready to swim up 30 metres...

Im not Jacues Cousteu, but I'm sure those guys who make it their living to survive where others have just died and recover their bodies know best.
Fact is, the gas mix you choose depends on the depth you plan to go and how long you plan to stay underwater. When it goes to technical diving its quite common to have 2 or 3 bottles, sometimes with different mixtures, with you.

Yes, we all know that.
LETS BREAK IT DOWN:
THOSE MEN, WHO DO THAT FOR A LIVING, ARE PROFFESIONAL DIVERS. THEY DIVE, AND THEY ARE ALIVE. THEY DO IT A LOT. I DONT THINK THAT THEY WOULD BE USING THE WRONG BOTTLE, AND IF IT WAS NOT NORMAL FOR THEM TO SOUND SQUEEKY, THEY WOULD NOTICE, OR THE SUPPORT PERSONAL TALKING TO THEM BY RADIO WOULD NOTICE.
I hope I have made it clear now what we are discussing, since maybe english is not your strong suit.

STOP THE ROUNDABOUT WE ARE GOING IN CIRCLES HERE!
EDIT: Look, the point I was making is that their voices are squeaky, VERY squeaky. Maybe that is an effect of radio transmition underwater, but I doubt it, since I can find no evidence of it. You say that they would not be using helium at that depth.... and I don't WANT to disbelieve you, but there is no other gas that can safely be inhaled in any amount by humans that has the right density to produce the squeak.
So, if helium is not making them have squeaky voices: WHAT is?
