Title: Where to get your favourite cRPG weapon in real life.
Post by: Lethwin Far Seeker on November 25, 2013, 02:52:54 pm
Did you know that most of the weapons in cRPG are based off of historical artifacts and their reproductions?  Below is a list (IN PROGRESS) of all the cRPG weapons (in relative order) that I could find FOR SALE online.  Most of the weapons are sold at KultOfAthena or TherionArms (or both in which case I have listed both; know that sometimes the weapons do in fact have differences depending which site you go to).  This is because both of these vendors sell products made by other companies\vendors; i.e they both sell/resell stuff made by Albion and take a cut from the profit.  I do not work for either one of these vendors.  They are NOT paying me to do this.  They SHOULD pay me for having done this.  Seriously I would love to be paid for all the drool I just spent poring over all these weapons.

I remind you that this list is not complete by any means but I will continue to add on to it if this is actually something the community appreciates (which it should unless it wants to spend 45 minutes poring through 347 nearly identical arming swords looking for THAT exact style of quillons).
If you want to see a cRPG weapon in this list that I have not included, comment below or PM me and I will do my best to find it!

Enjoy!

Now where is the option to buy with cRPG gold?

Don't forget to shop around.  Kult of Athena hands down has the best prices -- but if you like a sword and it's like $800, you can often find a cheaper version (on that site or a different one) that is similar still quite serviceable by a different maker (windlass, cold steel, etc).

You can also find reviews of many weapons online, and sometimes even destructive tests to see how tough they are.

Archery category added.  I'm a bit sparing when it comes to arrows because in the ideal situation, an arrow should be of a length proportional to your arm\draw length.  Also, many of the arrow sets I've seen appeared to come with machine made arrow tips.  Shamefur dispray!

Ever wanted to chop a pig head in half with one swing? Now you can!

Note that the Cold Steel Greatsword is NOT a flamberge as it lacks the "flam" (flame) or squiggly serrated blade.  So far, the flamberges that I have seen have been ornamental which I don't like.  I'm on the lookout for a legitimate flamberge though.

But there is?  It's not exactly identical to the crpg knife granted but there are a lot of knives or seaxs with those features.  I intended to add a more similar one later down the road.

Find me a spathovaklion!

Have never seen a Spathovaklion for sale but I'll try to find one.  The short broad sword looks fine indeed.  There have been a surprising number of reproductions for it so you have a nice selection and price range to choose from.

Shame Arms of Valour is no longer about.

Bought my Gen 2 swords from them, lovely. The cheapest is my favourite, a Gen2 waisted gladius, beautifully balanced and quick.

These were much better than some more expensive swords, bought a Kriegschwert Angus trim handmade sword and its so floppy its ridiculous. Like a stick of wet celery. Plus its grip is nowhere near big enough for both my paws however its quite nice 1h, its very light for a hand and a half blade. Well worth if you can trying out anything you are interested in, see if you can get there and handle a demo model.

Most replica swords from films etc are display only and worth avoiding. Dont buy if made from stainless steel unless you want for decoration only. The first sword I bought was a Narsil film replica, basically it would break very quickly versus a proper sword. Looks pretty though.

+1 for the effort, that's A LOT of copy pasting, though i'd rather spend that kind of money elsewhere, maybe if i'd have plenty of k's on the bank i'd consider it :D

edit: allthough having this hang above the telly would be cool, it's like 1.3m in length, $1,624.95 is just dirt cheap innit.

damn, beaten to the punch...

In all honesty though, if a "real long maul" cannot be found, it would be pretty easy to make. Buy a sledgehammer, remove the head, attach it to a ~5 - 6ft long shaft.

Better make sure that the wooden shaft is sturdy as fuck though. I feel like the one in game should be snapping like a twig all the time. There is a reason that the ones nowadays are made of carbon fiber composites... and those are not nearly as long as a long maul.

EDIT: According to the crpg shop, the long maul is only 125 cm long.. which converts to 4.1015ft. That seems awfully short to me. Coulda sworn the long maul was nearly as tall as a person in game, which I would assume is ~6ft.

I was looking at "battle ready" sword reviews online, and was not impressed at all with the findings.  I did however find a "reputable" dealer that is only about a 20 minute drive from my house:

http://armor.com/

They and cold steel are probably the only two companies I would trust to buy a medieval sword from (and I would really like to get one, some sort of knightly or arming sword).  This one looked good to me (was one of the cheaper swords, but what I'm looking for:  http://armor.com/sword036.html)

Most of Windlass's current offerings are pretty good in terms of battle ready.  In the past this was not so much true, which is why they may still have a poor reputation lingering online.

Cold Steel weapons are almost always tough as hell, but some are of dubious historical accuracy.

If you spend $400 or more on a battle ready weapon, you're probably in good shape.  It's the cheaper ones you have to look out for and be careful.  If you have a high carbon steel blade with a full tang, you are at a good starting place.

If you are ever doubtful about a particular weapon, I recommend making a post or doing a search at sword-forum.com.  It's pretty much what those guys do.

I'm less concerned with being "100% historically accurate" than having a sword that's not going to fall apart if I ever use it.  Durability is my main concern really.

Thanks for the advice about posting on a sword forum (myarmoury.com seems like a good site as well).  Carbon steel with a full tang was the best advice people said to look for online (as well as proper heat tempering).

Sure, that makes sense.  Cold Steel is a pretty well respected company as far as I know.  In terms of historicity, swords like their Italian Longsword look fine, but the warhammer looks a bit modern in my opinion, so it varies.  I've heard most of their stuff is designed to take levels of punishment that no real medieval sword would ever be able to sustain -- so it's a good bet it terms of durability. :)

I have one of their tomahawks, it's pretty awesome.
The sword you linked looks pretty badass as well.

Get yourself a quality knife from a quality brand

Idk about Cold Steels swords, but I find that there knives are a little overpriced

Just collect high-end production and custom knives
Cheaper than swords, just as fun and you can actually use them as a tool

Their swords are overpriced, but that may be because they are very high quality.  I wouldn't buy a knife from cold steel since there's so many other choices available.  They also are known as a knife company, so their swords may be somewhat hit or miss, but I've only heard very good things about the durability of their swords.

I was discussing swords, not knives when cold steel was mentioned.  I'm not interested in production knives personally, all my tool cutting needs are currently satisfied :P

From what I can tell, the Deepeeka blades are not balanced properly at all.  Most of them listed on KoA have the point of balance way out at 7" or more.  Some people may prefer this though!  Many of them are nice looking, so could be a good budget option.

Was the item you ordered back ordered?  I ordered a gambeson that was back ordered and it never showed up but they responded to all of my emails and helped me get refunded and order a new gambeson that wasn't back ordered and arrived on time.

I heard great things about Angus Trim swords, but can't find anywhere to buy them online.

I was at first glad to see there was somewhere to actually buy a danish sword, since it was one of my favorites from crpg, but that one just doesn't really seem to be the sword for me. I can't get past the fact that the pommel is clearly made on a lathe, and looks as poorly-done as the cannon barrel I made when I first used a lathe. The maker of it could have at least buffed/polished it so that the tell-tale lines from the CNC were gone (and come on, he used a CNC? I at least used a manual lathe, it isn't that hard. Put some personality into your creations goddamnit!). Not only that, but I really like the chord-wrapped grip that the model in-game has. This one is supposedly leather over chord, but to me it looks like cheap plastic from the pictures. While I am sure it is indeed leather, and perhaps looks better in person, I just think that covering the metal rings in the center of the grip was a bad decision. Other than that the blade looks fantastic, and I only wish that this was sold at an affordable price somewhere... with a grip that looked more like that in the game, or at least looked more authentic/non-modern.
