Title: The Forest

Well, all right then. This could be interesting.

I have to say this horror game looks pretty interesting, a bit more "adventures" than most horror games out today. Kinda like Miasmata, though the monster there wasn't that scary.

Love the survival genre and the forest/jungle looks really nice and dense, but it's so spooky

Why no co-op ? That would be interesting as hell, even for someone like me who dislikes horror/zombie crap......  :(

Necrorave was talking about this awhile back, and it looks good, but why are the mannequins attacking people?

Co-op always takes away the main core of horror games, to be afraid. I've rarely played any horror game that actually worked in co-op, there is something about playing all by yourself that makes the experience so much greater.

Take Dead Island for example, there was some half-scary moments and I played it all solo, then I replayed it with a friend, we were laughing instead of being scared in that exact same scene.

Co-op would have been cool but I'm still going to enjoy the fuck out of this game when I get to play it.

reminds me of The Descent:

heard about this before on haven forums, but after watching those videos my penis is erect.

this is the sort of game that is forming in my mind when I play other "survival" games like state of decay.

thanks for posting defo on my radar. altho it might be best to save games like this until occulus rift comes out ;p

The novel ‘I Am Legend’ is also a big influence on the game

I know right. I bought Outlast when it was on sale and I played it for 15 minutes. 10 of which I used to get into the first corridor. Guess horror games in buildings is not my thing.

The game is pretty much finished, as is obvious from the fact they're showing alpha gameplay. Everyone knows that you use "pre-alpha" otherwise.

because it´s fun
this is the best example for it: Some friends let the most scared dude play a scene from "Condemned 2", one of the best scary-gameplays I enjoyed so far
and he dies so friggin often, he makes every mistake you can possibly make in that small level
"That´s not a normal bear! Thats, like, a jaw-sized bear!"
"Dude, you wanna play instead?"

Title: Re: The Forest

Trailer 3 wasn't as good as the other 2 IMO, but that's just because it seemed more like a gameplay demo than a trailer to me, which I was hoping to avoid with this game. The first two trailers just had me like "oh shit man I can't wait to play this game and see what it has in store", but they just showed me most of what it has in store. Not saying it looks bad but they just ruined the suspense for me :(, oh well still gonna play the shit out of this.

Also, them feels when his son is sleeping in the plane, knowing that he's probably dead considering what the game consists of. like dis if u cry evry time

yeah the AI looked a little sloppy here. but the trailers were so well made and hype inducing that disappointment is inevitable.

That video does not at all capture the situations Kafein was referring to though. They are playing the game together while talking, also, that game isn't the scariest of games. Kafein was referring to people playing scary games alone, with volume turned up and the lights out. Which is not gonna make you laugh, because you are alone, so it's basically just scary. I don't get why someone would do that either with actual horror games. I don't get what is fun about horror movies or games in general. Getting frightened is about as pleasant as stabbing yourself wth a knife, no reason whatsoever to subject yourself to that. This game doesn't seem so bad in that regard though, it seems extremely atmospheric and intense, which I can dig. But a game with scripted jumpscares, I really do not get it.

Horror genre is more than scripted jump scares, it´s about facing fears and dealing with them in an environment where it can´t really affect you (but you still sorta get involved to it). Anyways, if you want to know why people like it: google it.

btw, why are you answering to messages from january?

Yes.  You will be able to play the game as a more traditional survival/exploration simulator, with the horror elements effectively disabled.

I enjoy it. And playing 'horror' games in coop makes 0 sense as it takes away all sense of the horror.

I still remember playing AVP2 when I was a kid on the marine path and being scared shitless.

It's the adrenaline rush that gets me on it. Mind you some games like Amnesia I just can't take. I managed about half of the first one, mostly playing in the dark late at night on my own and just couldn't force myself to continue it was to much stress.

Played the alpha (on steam), looks superb.

It's full of bugs and incomplete (nothing game breaking, just flora, AI, swimming and some inventory stuff).
Can't save atm though, so I'd advise waiting for awhile (not sure how the price will change though).

I see it becoming a nice 10-50 hour 'use' of time :P.
Title: Re: The Forest
Post by: Leesin on June 01, 2014, 07:29:16 am
Yeah I played it for a while and for an alpha release it's not bad, it has a lot of potential, it does have game breaking bugs though, memory leaks and as you said, saving is broken, which is game breaking considering you don't really want to invest too much time unless you don't mind losing everything ( or crashing if and once memory leak destroys your game ). But they are aware of these issues and are looking to fix them ASAP.

It will be especially fun in the future once they finish the core of the game and then add in co-op.

Lol, personally I didn't find it scary at all tbh, night time is a little creepy but it's certainly not as scary as the trailers make out, yet, I say yet because I assume in the future they'll work on the whole "pant shitting factor".

I made my shelter and stuff on this tiny little bit of beach below some rocks, none of the island hillbillies seemed to be able to find me there when I wanted to be safe, the only time that was close was when a bunch of them chased me through the forest in the day to my camp, but once I got down the rocks to my shelter one of them came to the edge of the rocks above and just stood there watching me, then ran off.

Getting frightened is about as pleasant as stabbing yourself wth a knife

Having experienced both, I just feel like I should point out that they're really not very similar and getting stabbed is definitely worse.
