CTRL-J instastops and rears your horse. Why is that even in the game? It makes no sense to be able to do that and it's actually a really useful tool especially to 1h cav.
-
because cav was missing fancy features
-
u mad because king mircea just used that 10 minutes ago to get behind you which didnt help at all.
its very useful to stop before you bump teammates with a heavy horse
-
Why is that even in the game?
Because you can get rid off the annoying horse-lag. Warping around like crazy, Ctrl + J is the only really viable option to get rid off it. Also, I've played a ton of 1h cav and I've never actually used it except for removing the lag. Might try it if I get back to playing it and see if it has it's uses.
Edit: I remember killing 1 or 2 lancers while fleeing and using backswing and Ctrl + J, but nothing big. :P

i find it pretty useful when being chased by 2-3 cav :P ctrl J and most go past you. I usually get rid of horse lag by double tapping w O.o

you already ruined a few maps, why are you trying to ruin the game even more??

Ah yes, I use it to do that as well of course. I can imagine the Warband devs implenting it solely because they were unable to actually fix the horse lag bug.
I like that my post is getting minused while nobody has posted me a proper reason for its existence. It's just a mechanism for saving your ass after you fuck up. If it wasn't in the game already I assure you there would be no one making a post suggesting a button to make your horse stop on a dime, because it is a ridiculous idea. Sure being able to rear your horse is way cool, but they could've required you to stand still in the first place. With WSE 2 you can even rebind it to an easier button and it allows you to stop when you are about to run into a pike or throwing weapon for a huge reduction in damage, it allows you to dodge chasing cav, it allows you to stop and block cav coming from the side, it allows you to fuck up the timing of an incoming lancer and stab him.

What makes you think that a rider can't rear his/her horse? At full gallop it wouldn't be possible but at a trot it works. Why wouldn't it be in the game?

Because as you say, you cannot make your horse rear at full gallop. Perhaps I should've stressed that I find the insta-stopping at any speed a problem, not the rearing itself, which is obviously awesome.

A lot of stuff isnt "real" in this game. Why are people dying from arrows in their hands? Why can players run at full speed after receiving falling damage? How can someone with a 3m pike stab a person right in front of him?
-
I like the that I can make horse whinny with CTRL+J. If the rearing is ever removed from the key-combo, please keep the whinny noise in, thanks.

Because it is desirable for gameplay to have things behave unrealistically like that. Is it desirable for gameplay to allow players to stop their horse instantly when moving at full speed? I don't think it is.

For me it is. Puts another element in "dog fights", I like it although I hardly ever use it. Also the rearing simply looks cool. I'm just happy that this feature isnt map dependant :P
For you it might not be, as much as I hate this completely stupid sky-stabbing, its still ingame and you know very good how to (ab)use it.

Stop trying to MKFAC the game more Teeth.
FFS it's been around for at least 2 years!!!
I've only ever had total joyous fulfilment playing c-rpg twice.
The day I realised I could use ctrl-j with my 1h can to rape lance cav via decapitation.
And then the 3 weeks only used siege gear on siege which resulted in an explosion in it's use and it's removal for like 2 months from the game, such a proud moment :3
But fuck off from ctrl-j it's great!

What is this, a post from Teeth that does not have some kind of dry argument in it?
-
Most of the time when someone rears their horse it is a death sentence. Unless of course the enemies are stupid or there are no enemies around. This is like saying why should kicking be in the game, no one would do that and it probably wouldn't make someone stagger back.

Except it's not as kicking has clear intended functionality, it allows you to punish people that stick close to you with very fast weapons and to be able to hurt turtles who stand in a corner or are otherwise very hard to hit with regular attacking.

This sounds more like a rage post that anything else. Did you just get killed because of it?
Should be moved to the The Chamber of Tears.
-
It did happen when I made the post but it didn't really hurt me at all, but it reminded me of making this thread which I have been intending to do.
-

Rear horse was in native as well I believe. CTRL+J sucked so it was never used. With WSE2 we can map it to whatever. I used to be in the habit of jumping whenever I was about to run a teammate over, now I'm starting to get used to pressing my "rear horse" button.
I have never seen a friendly cav do that. :|
It's very difficult to overcome the urge to jump instead of rear (due to having to press ctrl+j for years), but when I remember to do it, I'm thankful. Because instead of jumping down a hill, I will rear the horse and not take damage to horse, or to teammate.
Also being able to bind a key to dismount has saved me so many headaches as well. I used to always pick up items on the ground instead of dismounting.
I think you should also be able to dismount while moving (a la GTA style jumping out of moving vehicles). You should take damage depending on how fast the horse is moving, and obviously should "roll" or otherwise fall to the ground (or stumble if at really low speeds).
About "insta" stopping, your horse rears and you are stuck on the horse for a good full 2 seconds before can dismount when you rear. It's a pretty pointless act to do for any sort of offensive attack.

rearing a horse from the side is also very unrealistic, fix that polearms can only rear from full frontal stabs, and im fine with the ctrl j tweak

I think it's a good and needed feature for the game balance. If they ever add collision damage for horses - that would be even more necessary. If you speak about impossibility to rear a horse like that - why don't you think that rearing a plated charger roaming on full speed while glancing from a bad angle is any kind of realistic? I would start changing rearing mechanics from that point so you need to deal some certain damage to stop the horse (so you can actually glance without rearing it like you do against players).
If you really find it that necessary - I can suggest something like a skill check: i.e. if you have (riding requirement + 1) or more - you can rear a horse, it would benefit dedicated riders with high riding amounts. But then again - it would only benefit horse ranged, who would need that?
-
Rearing has one niche function also.
If you get slowed for any reason, hittin rubble, glancing a tree or wall, etc... and see that pesky crossbower or thrower lining up the killshot.
You can rear the horse at the right moment. And the horse will tank the dmg or die instead of you getting hit.
Protip! :D
