Title: Steam Halloween Sale
Post by: Rumblood on October 30, 2013, 04:09:22 am
Lots of games on sale, but I highly recommend picking up The Walking Dead for $6.49 for a single player interactive movie experience.

Oh yeah, you can pre-order Season 2 season pass for 10% off.

If you like adventures, sci-fi or cyberpunk then can't really go wrong with Primordia for £1.74. Kind of like Beneath a Steel Sky but post apocalyptic

There are a decent amount of adventures on there tbh

Darkfall: Lost Souls
The Whispered World
Penumbra collection (half adventure half survival horror)
Testament of Sherlock Holmes
Scratches
Didn't play Dracula: Origin, heard some good things about it though

80% off Sleep Dogs, awesome
50% off Rise of the Triad (didn't play yet)
Killing Floor
Natural Selection
Fallout NV
Zafehouse: Diaries
Vampire: The Masquerade

Didn't play these but could be worth it:
Brothers
Outlast
I have no mouth and I must scream

Sleeping Dogs is a steal for that money.

I would have liked to get Vampire: Bloodlines and Fallout 3 for my steam collection, but both come censored in my country, so fuck it. Valve is really pissing me off. After so many years, still no age verfication system to get rid of market restrictions made for minors...

edit: lol, sleeping dogs comes as "low violence version", too. Think I'll pass.

Guys, pick up God Mode - it is a really fun (AND HARD) 3rd person shooter - with co-op for up to 4 players! I might just be looking for a co-op group for this right now.

I can second this, God Mode is a great game for 5€!

The CO-OP is fun and challenging if you add oaths etc.

I also bought:
How to Survive (http://store.steampowered.com/app/250400/)

Bought Swapper for 5€ and already finished it in 4 hours. Very short, but nice art style and athmosphere. If you liked Portal, you're probably gonna like Swapper.

I've had excellent returns on The Swapper by a couple of people, buying right nao

It's a 3rd person fast-paced shooter, where you have to survive waves upon waves of enemies, advancing along the level. Mechanics are very simple, but effective. Also, you earn gold and XP, which allows you to customise your character and get better weapons/weapon upgrades.

If this sounds ok for you, then yeah, it's a great game, especially for its price.

Me, Nessaj, Xant and Lezard were playing God Mode yesterday (far too late, couldn't get up this morning :( ), had fun, till it eventually went and bugged out at some point.

Sounds like Serious Sam.

well i heard god mode was one of the worst games to come out in the last year. apparently it has terrible shooting mechanics and mind numbingly monotonous gameplay.

For 5€ it is a fine game, 12€ for a 4-pack, 100% worth it for some LAN fun or just having a quick blast with a few friends. It seems most challenging when playing only as two though (might be some scaling issue).
I wouldn't pay more than 10€ for the game though normally.

There are negatives with it, but as I wrote for 5€ I can totally ignore those;

It isn't something you can play 24/7, of course, it only has a few maps, not THAT much customization sadly, plus the only change in experience is the buffs/debuffs that randomize at every shrine. Which though can completely change the gameplay.

Mindless, headless shooting. Serious Sam in third person, but with worse mechanics (bit too much console garbage over the controls/settings).

Fine game, though in total very lackluster and could have been way more.

Fallout NV looks like a good deal for anyone who doesn't have it (I'd recommend playing it).

Otherwise not much there interests me.  I didn't think the Walking Dead game was that good, it was okay.

Overall my thoughts about the sales are "meh."  What's up with all the shitty looking indie games that are coming out nowadays?  Don't they realize that 8 bit games were a necessity in 1985.  But 27/28 years later, not so much.  Only a few NES games are still worth playing these days.  And I don't see these new platformer/shit graphics games being worth my time or money.

Limbo, Deadlight, The Swapper... all great platformers for no money

Deals on Fallout 3 and New Vegas, Bioshock, Dead Space, Left for Dead, Sleeping Dogs, Both Amnesias, Penumbra, Both Darksiders... all that for less than 5-10 euros/dolars each..

Just because you got a full Steam library and bought pretty much everything you're interested in doesn't mean there aren't many geat deals for the people that don't have a big library or are new to Steam

Because gaming is all about graphics. Best you stay with your GTA.

Didn't see that bioshock deal. Just grabbed it. That's a steal indeed.

I still have a ton of games I need to finish but.. might as well put it on the backlog.

As someone who loves crpg and Warband (and played Ultima Online far after there were better graphics games) and counter-strike religiously from beta's til 2008'ish...no, graphics really don't mean shit to me. But when you have shit graphics and scrolling platform games that resemble games from 1985, I just don't get it. Wish these indy dev's would put some more effort into their games.  It it appears as if that trend is catching on.  Reminds me of the shitty MMORPG trend that we've had for the past 10 years or so.  Hope that's not what the indy genre will turn into.

Why do you care? If people want to play these types of games let them. There are plenty who never were a part of the early console/gaming days due to not being born :P

You had your time! Now make room for others

Because it sets trends (bad trends!).  If you want to play shitty 8 bit platform games that capture your attention for 30 minutes, pirate an NES emulator and buy a $20 NES USB controller and play it like you're supposed to.

So which of those games were especially shitty? Have you even played any of them? There are probably bad ones, but I have played a few that were pretty good. The best thing about them was that they did something that an AAA title would never do: dare to try something new. It wasn't always in the gameplay (Faster Than Light), sometimes it's just the mood of the game (Limbo), an unusual setting (The Binding of Isaac), the story that is told (To the moon), but sometimes, it's everything (Braid).

And seriously, if you ever have two dollars to spare, and Intrusion 2 is 75% off, you should try it. It's one of those 8bit platformers, but it's great. Short, but intense.

I agree that they are mostly overpriced, though. Not ready to shell out close to 20 dollars for a game that lasts for 5 hours. But a few dollars for a 5h break from the commercially streamlined standardware is a good deal IMO.

I tend to agree. Not only that, but indie developers by their very nature can't start with a AAA title that includes every bell and whistle (that includes the very expensive Art). They have a limited development team and limited funds. Their goal is to make a fun game, build a resume, and hopefully get some funding along the way (including a little bit of profit). I'm happy to see that the problem on Steam is wading through a bunch of games that may not be the highest of quality, but brings the opportunity for a fresh take on the genre for a few bucks, rather than looking at the same old titles at $59.99.

If you look at all the games that were made, there's very little link between game budget and game overall quality.

Mostly true when it comes to gameplay, but it appears to me that lowbudgetgames have a habbit of being more often quite badly optimized. The grahicspart I wont bring into this, cause graphics stopped mattering long ago.

Optimization comes down to the quality of your team and having reasonable ambitions. High budget high graphics games tend to flirt with the limits of what their consumers have as hardware
