Title: New Scene Managers
Post by: Jacko on July 19, 2013, 12:25:21 pm
Our two new Scene Managers are Fips and Teeth.

They'll be cleaning up and learning the ropes, so hopefully you guys will start seeing changes in the near future.

Congrats guys!

Let us know what us map enthusiasts (scene reviewers?) can do to help.

Maybe we do a sign up for scene reviewers that also explains how you see the new system working?  And then we can start going through the current rotations and the new entries and get some action going on removing some, altering some, and adding new ones.

Patch everything!!!

Lots of low quality and overplayed maps on battle but the one that draws the most playerbase groans is Ruined Fort (Native).  Half the map is 45 degree or steeper slopes and both teams spawn at the bottom of a ~60 second hill climb.  This map goes to flags much more often than most maps due to the slowing nature of having half the terrain be a slope.

Please be sure to finally add/update these maps:
Apsod - Peaceful Mountains (never added)
Teeth - Lakeside Abbey (update)
Jarold - Snowy Town (update)
Jarold - Furvink Prison (not sure, doubt it'd work anyway though, like most dungeon maps don't)
Jarold - Cultist Hill (not sure if added, never seen it once, also not sure if needing an update)
Zlisch - All Roads Lead To Mork If You Walk Them In Goats Image/Goat Road (update)
Obitus - Chasm (update)
FrugFrug - Big Sable Lighthouse (never added)

This man speaks the truth. Worst map. +1

Yeah I think it would be safe to say you guys need to check the past 2 or 3 pages on the battle and siege map submissions.
Title: Re: New Scene Managers

Just for your information, there are currently over 80 (!) maps in the Battle Cycle. Reason why some of them are overplayed is simply because there is a shuffle mode activated, which leaves some maps behind. We'll do the cycles manually from now on, should be worth it and much fairer to the map suggestions.

Don't worry about new maps or updates. We're both new to this and we'll need a little time to get things going more easily. Right now i will have to test everything before i even think about actually committing any changes, so it takes a little longer =P

Please keep in mind that native village maps don't deserve the same weighting as player made maps.  No map author will get their feelings hurt if a random native village map is removed, and everyone has played them countless times.

+1'd the updating all maps listed by Zlisch.

UNOFFICIAL MAP REVIEWS IN PROGRESS!!!!

Jarold - Ruined Fort (Yes)
(click to show/hide)
I think this map will have a similar playstyle to Tropical with a high value campable roof/indoors area in the middle.  There's lots of routes like Tropical as far as I can tell so it should work.  Let's find out!

afonsoserro - Bounty (YES)
(click to show/hide)
I see no reason this one couldn't work.  Small beach map, should be short rounds, open land.  Gravy.

FrugFrug - Big Sable Lighthouse (YES)
(click to show/hide)
Looks like it should be great!  Should be ready to play in its current state.

Jarold - Ruined Castle (YES)

(click to show/hide)
Small size, hopefully short rounds.  Infantry will love it.

Jarold - Cultist Hill (yes)

(click to show/hide)
Not nearly enough flat land.  Jarold has much better offerings, but it is well more deserving of a slot than some mountainous native villages.  I give it a lacklustre yes.

Ronin - Gladiator Arena (Yes)

(click to show/hide)
Players may have trouble finding each other with the maze.  I'm afraid this one may not last in rotation in its current state but it looks fun enough to put in and find out the problems with so we can get him to fix it.

Apsod - Peaceful Mountains (yes)
(click to show/hide)
A map rife with hills and obstacles.  Replace one of the super mountainous native village maps with this one please.  There are at least 3 notoriously mountainous native villages I can think of just off the top of my head.

Jarold - Crossing (Yes)
(click to show/hide)
I am a bit worried about FPS on this map.  Not much in terms of flanking routes but the action will be concentrated.  Deserves a slot in rotation to see if its fun.

____________________________________

Jarold - Grand Arena (not in its current state)

(click to show/hide)
With the outer walls of an arena map breachable horrible things happen and players can't find and attack each other.  I'm sure everyone remembers the notorious water gates map.
Let's not repeat that lesson.  Close off the arena and move spawns inside.

Jarold - Furvink Prison (NO)

Indoor battle maps instantly cause half the server to rage upon loading.

Obitus, have you opened the maps in the editor or are you just looking at screenshots?

Jarold - Ruined Castle (YES)

(click to show/hide)
Duplicate name of a very terrible native map.  Replace Ruined Castle (Native) with this!  Small size, hopefully short rounds.  Infantry will love it.
You are confusing Ruined Castle
(click to show/hide)
with Ruined Fort
(click to show/hide)

Which means it is still a duplicate name, but apart from that I agree and I doubt Ruined Fort is going to make the cut.
Title: Re: New Scene Managers
Post by: obitus on July 20, 2013, 02:46:35 pm
Indeed I am confused, good catch.  Ruined Fort is the groan-inducing mountain map and Ruined Castle is a mostly flat, enjoyable map with a big single pit in the middle with the collapsed tower.

I opened the first map to review it, then started fixing shit on it.  Then I decided that was dumb because I might be working for no reason and if I have the editor open I should probably be mapping.  Then I started mapping.

I'll be an unofficial reviewer still, so nobody panic  8-)

Well yes, everybody is unofficial unless they are official. Very good.

Obitus, from now on, whenever i need advice, i will personaly PM you.
You seem to have a bit more understanding of battle maps then everyone else. If you got the time, i ask you to reconsider and become the oficial reviewer.
Title: Re: New Scene Managers

:| I just can't help myself when the editor is open.  It's where I belong.

(click to show/hide)

The map is called Face Off.  Teams spawn directly next to each other on opposite sides of that gate.  The winch is up there on that raised platform.

Teams can wait for the gate to open, go around either side route, try and march single file up the catwalk en masse, or some combination thereof.  Chances are the gate will remain closed on high playercount games where the winch is highly contested.  Players with high ath will be the specialized role for this winch and low playercount teams with the highest ath player will be rewarded with the ability to open the gate when desired.

Note the map is like 3 hours old or so, subject to change  8-)

Come on obitus at least be a scene reviewer, you are good at what you do.

Furvink prison and grand arena shouldn't be added imo. I make a lot of these maps when i'm bored and I generally don't know if they are bad/good. I spent shitloads of time on upheaval and snowy town though so those are my favorite battle maps. So for me it comes down to mass submissions to get it right.

Just crossposting that scene managers should have full edit capability for maps submitted for rotation.  It takes more time to explain the problems to original mappers than to just fix them yourself.

I can't wait for a new map rotation...soooooo many new maps all at once.  Going to be awesome!

I agree but the problem is, some mappers don't want their map to be modified in any way by anyone but themselves. I myself am fine with it so long as my map is recognizable, but others might not. Unless it's just understood that modifications may be made when submitted.

Lets start this

Och thx Fips mayby make attacker spawn on diffrent map so that they can run 5 out of 6 minutes to the flag if gate is open and map transition possible. -_-

Precisely.  I think that if someone is submitting their map for server use they should be consenting to have a version custom tailored to fit the server's needs.
