Title: Server Lag. Needs to be adressed.
Post by: vocab on May 04, 2011, 07:50:05 am
I know that the recent steam sale brought a huge influx of new people, and the new CRPG patch brought a bunch of people I haven't seen in a few months back. However, some nasty server lag has plagued the servers with above 70 players. It wasn't like this pre patch/pre influx even with 70-80, but the lag is really making some of the servers unplayable. Everyone's ping jumps 20-40 higher than usual, and it's stable.  Go on Siege when there's above 70 players. Try to feint. Doesn't work. Try to block properly. Doesn't work most of the time. You'll get hit by things outside of your hit box that doesn't make a bit of sense. It's ghetto M&B at its finest.

Bunch of people in the server were also complaining, but they were still playing. I asked Tydeus if he was getting this lag, and he told me it's really bad on his end too. Is something wrong server side? Did CRPG attempt to adjust the netcode and break everything in the process? I can only play with under 60 people.

Any insight to this problem would be great.

Depending of the daytime my ping is sometimes above 30, but no general issue here at all.

Welcome to my world, where ping rarely drops below 100

It is the NA ATS servers all being hosted together. [2 battles/siege/duel server] and them all being at max capacity. Box hardly handles it.
With the influx of o many NA players, we need more NA servers/ people need to donate to such groups who host to increase quality, number, and size of servers.

That is all.

I've been playing on TunaTown since it is hosted separately by BRD. No lag there for NA -- and it is melee only for it's first week.

It hasn't been showing as an incrase in ping, but there's definitely been more lag and random choppiness lately. Also nasty FPS lag on some of the more prop-heavy new maps, specifically the city ones with lots of buildings.

It seems to only happen when the servers are almost full. Something in the new patch must be too performance heavy on the servers.

I've noticed that on the NA I'm unable to do fast feints because my second left mouse click is never registered. The lowest player count I've noticed this at is around 60 players on the NA and 90 on the siege with little to no one else playing on the 80 man server or the duel. I saw the server under that much pressure before the patch and it ran fine. I don't believe that it's -just- due to the steam sale, I honestly think the patch might have changed something.

I am in agreement as well. I have noticed a 10 ping increase on the 80 man server, and a 20-30 ping increase on the 100 man server, but I have also noticed what seems to be server-side lag independent of those concrete ping differences.

There's a difference between having your feints/blocks become less effective because of higher ping and literally right-swing-spamming your way to a 20-1 record over two rounds because neither you nor your opponents can accurately gauge position, attack direction, or that you are even attacking at all.

I noticed it gets better late at night or early morning, sometimes even with a lot of people.

I think people are talking about 2 different things here.  NA siege, notably when NA 80 also has a decent number playing (is Hospitaller NA 100 also using same box as ATS, thought I heard that somewhere), but also other servers have serious lag issues as they reach near capacity (maybe we could make 100 person servers actually cap at 80 people).  But since the patch there has been some definite issues with packet loss and server side lag at much lower capacities and when very packed far worse than before patch and fighting becomes as random as trying to fight in the China server if you are from the North American East Coast.  Before lag might have been bad, but now its almost completely unworkable.

As a 2h spec, not able to feint makes it extremely difficult to fight 1h + shield.

Kesh, agreed, btw did you put your pic in your avatar?

I'd really like to see this. Especially since BRD's server is now up as well as Acre's server. This means there are servers which remain mostly unfilled while the NA servers are overloaded. Wish LLJK would set their server back up.

I wish it was melee only. It's melee and CAVALRY only though, which turns it from awesome to lamer than regular mode. Would be nice if admins would warn people not to spawn with them

I wish they would just cap the servers at 70.  That's the mark where I start noticing that the feint timing is off.  You can still feint, you just have to slow down your button clicks, but it sucks.

I'm sword and board and when I fight a good 2 handed blocker, feinting is essential to open them up...trading blows back and forth just destroys my shield putting me at a big disadvantage.

I've also noticed that sometimes my swings don't seem to connect even though I am well within range of my opponent.

It's funny that you say that, because the exact same thing is even more applicable to the 2 hander.

Ya the lag is quite a bit more noticeable... But you also have to understand this isn't WOW they dont have the backbone or the monetary support to keep a huge server running

It is true in both cases. A very good blocker can simulate a shield in duel. And as more and more people can block nearly flawlessly, feinting, holding and other techniques become very important. Fight are already longer than what they were, so we really need to finish things fast.

I noticed it too especially on the battle servers.  Fights 1v1 or 2v1 tend to drag out because everyone's skill levels are pretty high.  This leads to cavs topping most maps just because they ninja people from behind.  It also leads to an influx of dedicated archers and xbows because theres more targets standing around for them to shoot.  The lag is just exascerbating things because its much harder to feint.  I do notice alot of server side lag on the siege server especially when the battle server is near capacity too.  Maybe we should cut the battle server to 80 people since acre and brd have their servers up.
