Title: Space Hulk
Post by: okiN on April 23, 2013, 05:29:39 pm
There's been news about this for a while now, but I guess no thread here yet. They're making a new adaptation of Space Hulk, looks pretty neat.

Here's a gameplay video featuring a rather annoying interviewer, and an RPS text interview.

Yeah, it's great fun.

Really? I quite like it. It's atmospheric and faithful to the new edition of the board game.

You're asking whether there's more to the game than the camera viewpoint? Odd question, but yes, there is also turn-based strategy gameplay.

Is it a bs review/opinion? I don't actually care about the board game roots, just fancy a decent tactical turn based game

I don't agree or disagree with the review simply because after playing the first mission I deleted the game and was glad that I pirated it before I wasted my money on it. It just feels like a really, really boring simple turn based strategy with not much going on, it just wasn't that fun for me ( not saying others wont enjoy it, but personally I thought it was complete dogshit ). I don't think the review is correct on some things, doors are easy to see and the animations didn't bother me. If he wants to talk about "looks" then I could agree that the game also looks like shit on max settings for something released in 2013.

So yeah for me, the game has nothing going for it, I wouldn't pay for it before you have tried it because you might regret it. You might not regret it and want to buy it after that, who knows. But Grumbs, IMO if you're just looking for "Turn based strategy" and don't care about the board game roots at all then I would probably say this is one of the most simple and boring turn based strategy I've had the misfortune to play. Again, this is all my own opinion before anyone gets butthurt at me.

http://www.teardown.se/ - this company do 'Alien Assult' a total clone of Space hulk. If you want to get a grasp of the gameplay of SH and dont want shiny-ness, play that.

I think a lot of the complaints are essentially valid, but most of them are also easily fixable with patches, and overall I think the tone of the review is too harsh. I do agree that the price point is way too high though, I'll probably pick this up on a sale some time later. It's certainly a lot cheaper than the board game.

And yes, as Leesin pointed out, it is a board game adaptation, not some squad-based TBS in the vein of X-Com or whatever. So if any of you are expecting that sort of thing, don't.

The problem with these kind of board game adaptions is that they're always going to be shit. What makes board games and traditional PnP RPG's fun is the other players you're playing with. I wouldn't play a board game with a stranger and I sure wouldn't play a board game with a computer. Just like I wouldn't play Dark Heresy or Dark Crusade with random people I didn't know or with a computer.
Games like these are bound to fail. Even worse this game doesn't stand as a tactical turn base game. Strip this game of it's W40k IP and it's nothing.

Space Hulk: Ascension is a fairly good game imo. It's lots of fun setting up firing positions and holding those lethal genestealers back.

I restart missions a lot because I feel that to lose one Terminator is an instant lose.
