Title: Cav Story
Post by: Grumpy_Nic on April 15, 2013, 04:45:05 pm
I decided to make a 1h/Shield cav. So I started climbing up to 15 STR to be able to dish out some damage and wield proper damage. That went pretty fast. Then I started pushing AGI to get some riding and was really excited to reach 9 Agi and use my rouncey. I killed that poor thing round after round, maneuvering through hordes of enemies trying to land a good blow... masterworked weapons flashed at my horse, killing it in half a blow (due to my shitty skills at maneuvering and simply not knowing how to cav properly).

Well I thought, keep leveling, it'll get better - so I reached 12 Agi, thus getting 4 riding, still using my rouncey because it has good speed. Not much changed, in general I ended up being infantry and grinding my way up to 15 Agi.

Then something happened. I put the 5th point in riding and selected my warhorse. Suddenly my character transformed into a shiny knight, riding a goddamn tank an invincible steed! I bumped through enemy formations, throwing my foes to the ground making them cannon fodder for my fellow infantry allies! My sword went through archers like a hot knife through butter! When my rouncey had difficulties approaching an archer (dieing from arrows) my warhorse catches these arrows with its mouth and spits it back - laughing horribly while doing so!
This heavy horse changed my character from a peasant that desperately tries to get near enemies to a heroic warlord that rides down his enemies.

Thank you my dear heavy horse, I love you.

It's only a matter of time until you'll find Occitan salad coming in hot on your six unleashing a hail storm of jarids like a fighter jet firing air-air missles into the tail of your beautiful bomber.

I don't see the reason to be surprised here, heavy cavalry should be better than light cav. Light cav had in the past been way to dominant.

Consider the fact you are paying more than double for a destrier than a rouncey and over three times as much for a warhorse it should surely be much better?

Warhorse best horse.

Dear god arabians and stuff already behave like they have no inertia. That's why old lance angles were nerfed, the agile horses could dance around someone poking continously.

You never played cav, did you ?

Talking about no inertia, please go out IRL, run as fast as you can and while maintaining that speed, do a U-turn on less than a square meter. Was that easy ? Was that possible ? No ? Yet that's what "humans" do at will in warband.

Compared to these aformentioned "humans", this is an accurate depiction of all horses in cRPG :

Playing cavalry is indeed rather rough until you get to 15 agility, and I think the lower levels of riding should be given a little more competence but not too much because too much could create a cav meta. You have to think that if someone decided to only put 12 agility in and stay at 4 riding then that means they would be able to have either a whopping 24 or 25 strength which gives them much more ironflesh and power strike than other 18-18, 21-15, etc cav.

Below is me arguing about class balance and you should probably just not even bother reading it.

I did and the normal horse line was always inferior to the agile horse line; the sarranid (now arabian) was always the "top" horse for lancing and no other came near.

Because people have no inertia in Warband, horses shouldn't either? I don't agree with that particular line of reasoning. Especially I don't agree that "cheap" horses should be as effective as top of the line horses.

Damn are you new? From the sounds of it you are, unstoppable. Screenshot your kdr so we can really see your damage?

Naw I'm not new. I've spent many of my 20+ gens as xbower. I played cav once a long time ago but that was lancer.
I was just a bit surprised that the change from rouncey to warhorse is so extreme, I mean I knew it would be better... but hell it felt like godmode. Wanted to share that experience, thats all.

Of course I dont have good score at every map cuz I still suck as cav but it got way easier. Will post a screenshot when I remember taking one while playing.

but not too much because too much could create a cav meta.

And also, take forum posts with a grain of salt or they could become meta-foric.

Ah... that you mean. Well KD sucks as I'm lvl24 and still am on 15/15 build. So I've just started catching up kills  :D At the moment its 96/171, 1:1.8

If only that was true
Nah, horses can't spit out arrows but they can swallow one and die from it. Even a warhorse.

A good tip to all new cav players is to slow down while trying to dodge projectiles.
Taking a hit at high speed may cause severe damage to both you and the horse due to the speed bonus.

Well yes... but for me the jump from champion rouncey (never had the stomach to ride the silly sarranid horse, doesn't fit the western-type horseman theme and I think they're a bit nonsense / op) to champion destrier, it really makes a difference in survivability and what you can do in general.

Champ. rouncey was decent for horse crossbowing though since there you don't have to come in direct contact, but for longsword from horseback having a good horse really makes a difference since you just have to be exposed for longer, and you sometimes have to knock down infantry which the rouncey is not good at - it's liable to get stuck in people.

A champion warhorse would probably be even better, but even a champion destrier with heraldric mail gear forces you to spend some rounds on foot (then again, on many maps you're better off on foot anyway) to make money.

Are our characters sprinting all out in mount and blade? lol, Heskey needs to get fitter then cos 7athletics is still a light jog by real standards, and you can turn around fast when jogging.

After a few seconds of running, your character will be going pretty fast ("sprint mode"), even with heavy armor on. That is the speed I'm talking about.

And anyway if you really want to go down that path, try arguing that horses in cRPG are as agile as their IRL counterparts.

IMO, people who don't use rouncies, coursers, or Arabians are bad at cav. (Dirnoobian)

Courser best IMO. If your going full speed you'll usually 1 hit people exept if your lancer which was originally made to 1 hit people but rarely does couse of latest updates couse infantry QQ'd and achieved another nerf.(make heavy lance 3000 pierce)

Oh please.

The damned Sarranid horse was always the best non-armoured horse, and stands a mile above things like the rouncey, you shouldn't be putting them in the same context. Make a mistake? Pull a last-second U-turn in two metres. Rouncey rider is 100% dead. Courser might get away with it just because people didn't have time to react. A Destrier takes less ranged to fire to down, because the Arabian is a nightmare to actually hit due to small size and incredible agility in comparison.

The worst thing is that it won't go with a western style cavalryman  :(

Heavy lance was un-nerfed some (went from 26p to 23p, and now it's 24p at a normal loom level).  I think they are pretty good again, still the best weapon for going up against other cavalry
