ranged coverage, melee coverage, are they separate to each other?
are they both affected by shield skill and shield width ? or one yes and the other no ? the tooltip on the character page says shield skill is only ranged coverage o.O
thanks, corsair

I can say for certain (me and Dave tested this) that the melee block radius for shields is the same regardless of shield size. Not sure if shield-skill has an effect, but probably not.
Ranged block radius is bigger for bigger shields.

then why does kinnigrim seem to have such a big forcefield with such a little shield ? o.O
i thought for years that shield skill and width both affected melee forcefield but i spoke to a twi dev and he wasnt even sure lol

He is probably very proficient at aiming his shield just enough to block many attacks, and he is very fast (10 athletics I think?) so he can influence positioning a lot.

no, you almost certainly get a higher forcefield with a bigger shield skill, get a skip the fun and try a 3 shieldskill round shield and an 11 shieldskill roundshield

It's possible, we would need to devise another test to accurately test different shield skill effects.

No, i think it doesn't matter, forcefield for melee blocks doesn't grow. It's the same for all shield skill and all sizes of shield. Can you test it Corsair?
-
How exactly do shields work?
They block shit

i dont know about that dave, i remember playing the start of my build when i had 4 shield skill and before that in the previous build when i had 7 and either im paranoid but im like 99.999% sure that melee forcefield grows

And i'm 99.99999999% sure you're wrong as melee forcefield is the same for all shields and all shields I think ;)

except if you are on horse, your tiny shield covers the whole bloody horse

Kinngrimm is something like 12/30 with 10 ath and 10 shield...

Unless I am presented with cmp evidence, I can't believe that. The difference between round and rectangular shields especially at high shield skill is like night and day for both melee and ranged coverage.
-
From my personal view. I only think ranged force field is increased. Melee stay the same. The shield itself is what makes the difference when blocking melee. Things like the cavalry shield have a much wider radius than something like heater shields.
Plus I think the curved look it has wraps around a bit adding more width too but I'm not entirely sure about that.

Cmp saying this in IRC is what prompted us to test it. I too had thought that it was the other way around, but I can't help but to believe my own eyes.

Kinngrimm has 11 athletics and 11 shieldskill.
-
AFAIK it does actually increase melee forcefield
-
Yes it is very obvious it has an influence on sides.
-
Shield blocking melee works exactly like weapon blocking, except it automatically uses the matching block values (i.e. left block if the opponent uses a right swing). Shield skill or size make no difference whatsoever.

I also witnessed something weird.
I got myself 3 shieldskill and a green normal shield. I put myself in a shieldwall giving me +4 so a total of 7 shield skill. Nonetheless Xbow bolts went through the bottom of my unscratched shield hitting me for little damage and no damage to the shield
-
At least in native some shields are easily pierced by the siege crossbow. Maybe the same happened here?

Thats most probably because of the shit resistance. To stop xbow bolts you need atleast 20 I think.
