Title: RIP LucasArts
Post by: Vibe on April 04, 2013, 09:05:59 am
http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/04/03/disney-shutters-lucasarts/

my hopes for a new Jedi Knight game are crushed, 10 years of waiting disintegrated, my dreams are destroyed, my life is nil

leave me alone
let me cry myself to sleep

EDIT: actually, come to think of it, this might actually be a good change

Just read it this morning and this is a sad news. Another Legend biting the dust...

Actually I'm more and more on the side of this being a good move here. Just take a look at the past few years of what these guys put out - it's mostly utter crap.

From the Jedi Knight series beyond Dark Forces II, meaning Jedi Outcast and Jedi Academy, wasn't even developed by LucasArts, only published.

The good stuff LucasArts themselves developed was long ago, and by now probably 90% of the team was different people. This good stuff includes:

Full Throttle

Jedi Knight: Dark Forces II

Other ones were either only published by them or shite. So this change to licensing model gives other game development studios a chance to make their own Star Wars games. I mean, let's be honest: even if they kept LucasArts, it would still be goddamn Disney calling the shots - my expectations for any proper game were close to null when I saw Disney take over.

Yea, maybe you're right.

The last remakes of Monkey Island 1 and 2 were actually pretty good and already done by outsourcing them to another studio.

Here is hope to remakes of Maniac Mansion, Zac McKracken and Indiana Jones.

...cuz when I think about it, the cult of LucasArts - at least for me, just personal opinion - comes from those gorgeous adventures they made. Never cared much about StarWars myself...

Yeah, the adventure games were amazing. I enjoyed Full Throttle, Grim Fandango and Monkey Island a lot.

IMO, this was to be expected after The Farce Unleashed.

Shame they had to pack up the bags and close down their Star Wars: 1313 project though, looked kinda cool. :(

A nice remake with the same love to detail as the original? Insta-buy for me! I loved Day of the Tentacle...

Yeah, I definitely won't miss LucasArts, at least not how they were now. They haven't made anything good in so many years that they were just living on borrowed time. The LucasArts we all loved died a long time ago.

I was kind of disappointed to start with, but then i'm with Vibe and others after thinking about it. My interest in Lucasarts pretty much only extends to the old adventure games, and that is like 10+ years ago. Maybe they will look at the old IP's and see what they can do with them, but i'm not holding my breath. Its not like Lucasarts cared about them either

This means no Republic commando 2, the game I've been waiting for since it had a cliff ending, its been 8 years since it came out and it still got enough players for full quite a few 32 matches.

Raven releases Jedi Knight II source code

http://kotaku.com/lucasarts-closure-convinces-developers-to-release-awes-468994505

Hope something good comes out of it.

Here's a few funny comments people found in the code:
Code: [Select]
// there has to be a better way than this...
//We can do this, we have the memory
// if we don't call OTLook, things wedge
// don't spew tons of messages

Code: [Select]
// Do I Have A Leader?
// AM I A Leader?
// If Our Leader Is Dead, Clear Him Out
// If My Leader Isn't His Own Leader, Then, Use His Leader
// Eh. Can this get more confusing?

Code: [Select]
//FIXME: just make a flag, dude!
//never taunt these mindless creatures (Found under the code for the Rancor)
//hmm, bosses should do this less against the player
//FIXMEFIXMEFIXMEFIXMEFIXMEFIXMEFIXMEFIXMEFIXMEFIXMEFIXMEFIXMEFIXMEFIXMEFIXMEFIXMEFIXMEFIXME
//desann doesn't do these kind of frilly acrobatics
//boss-level guys can multitask, the rest need to chill out during special moves

Code: [Select]
//I'm to his right
{enemy jump code}
//fuck, jump instead
{enemy roll code}
//fuck it, just force it

Code: [Select]
//on ground and not moving and on level ground, no reason to do stupid fucking gravity with the clipvelocity!!!!
//SIGH... fucks him up BAD
//SIGH... spine wiggles fuck all this shit
//just get the fuck out
//FUCK IT, always check for do not enter...
//ask them what the fuck they're doing
// Need to extern these. We can't #include qcommon.h because some fuckwit used LS_NONE to mean both a lightstyle and a sabermove.

Why? There are plenty of total conversion mods for JKA, one which was really fun. Doubt anything will come of it.
Title: Re: RIP LucasArts

Because source code > modding tools. A fuckton more can be done, way past total conversion mods
Title: Re: RIP LucasArts
Post by: Bjord on April 04, 2013, 03:01:37 pm
Well, I'm referring to Moviebattles 2 for JKA. It pretty much feels like they bypassed everything that was hardcoded. Plus the game itself had great mod support.

To be more precise, I don't know what else they could possibly code to considerably improve the immersion. Perhaps improve the code for JKA itself and create a stabler client etc, but beyond that I'm clueless.

Only time will tell anyway.

You can take any part of the code and stuff it into a new game, if you wish so.

Ohh, I didn't think of that.

Well then, that is indeed positive.

But JK2 was old and shit, what kind of code could they possibly extract of value? Perhaps the way you assigned force skills, that was fun. Could be useful for some indie game.

But JK2 was old and shit

As much as it was old it was definitely not shit and there's definitely a LOT that can be used

Ahahaha I didn't mean it was shit, the "shit" part was more of a "stuff". My bad.

As in "old and stuff". Just a redundant additional word because aleins.

Thus the avatar :D Full Throttle was amazing.

Also, checking myself through the JKII combat code file, some lulzy comments:

Code: [Select]
// Intelligent Ledge-Diving Deaths:
// If I'm an NPC, check for nearby ledges and fall off it if possible
// How should/would/could this interact with knockback if we already have some?
// Ideally - apply knockback if there are no ledges or a ledge in that dir
// But if there is a ledge and it's not in the dir of my knockback, fall off the ledge instead

Code: [Select]
// If the entity is in a vehicle.

{//whaaa?  I'm not on this bike?  er....
assert(!!"How did we get to this point?");
}
// Get thrown out.
// Now Send The Vehicle Flying To It's Death
// If Moving
// Send The Bike Out Of Control

Code: [Select]
// dumb, just get the NPC out of the chair

self->client->dismembered = false;
//FIXME: the limb should just disappear, cuz I ate it
G_DoDismemberment( self, self->currentOrigin, MOD_SABER, 1000, HL_ARM_RT, qtrue );

//SIGH... because our choke sounds are inappropriately long, I have to debounce them in code!

case FORCE_LEVEL_4:
//je suis invincible!!!

Meh. I was always out of the loop when it comes to Star Wars games. I only played star fighter on PS2, that aoe clone called battlegrounds or something, and SWTOR.

You could still get your jedi knight game, the only thing is it won't be made by a long-crappy studio with the name "lucasarts", so possibly someone who will make a decent game. Doubtful tho since it will prolly be made for consoles.

I can swear, the same algorithm works in Warband :mad:

let them die, they haven't developed a good game in decades. all they make now is starwars kinect/lego trash.

all the good games of relatively recently weren't developed by lucasarts. I'm not entirely sure whats lucasart's actual role is, co publishing i guess?

basically jediknight was made by raven, not lucas arts. why would lucas arts make a sequel if they haven't  in last 10 years? possibly more likely to happen now.

I loved kotor and battlefront, but they whored out kotor so bad as a wow clone i'm kind of glad there is no battlefront 3, it would probably SUCK ASS. it would probably have to have perks and killstreak air strikes, instead of actually flying yourself.

I put more faith in these guys http://www.moddb.com/games/star-wars-battlecry

my only slight regret about this is that 1313 looked like it could be good and redeem them.

Wait, so do modders still have to get permission from someone to make a Star Wars mod? If not, I expect to see a Star Wars conversion on AOE HD

You buy a Star Wars license from Disney now if you want to make a Star Wars themed game, if that's what you were asking

MB2 was such a great mod, spent years of my life addicted to it. B13 to B19! Shame the mod just lost player base slowly over time. Having played every jediknight game from dark forces to academy, I have to say it's an even bigger shame such a great series went by the wayside.

Follow up on this:

EA acquires exclusive Star Wars game license

 Bioware + DICE (Battlefield devs) + Visceral and Frostbite 3 engine for new games. Sounds like a good chance for Battlefront 3.

Ready for the yearly release of Call of the Knights of the Old Battlefront?  Which ending will you choose? Blue, red or green?

The best part will be when you pay a full-game price for 70% of a game and then have to acquire the rest through micro-transactions.

And now for some fun facts!
Fact 1 (http://www.esrb.org/about/video-game-industry-statistics.jsp)
Fact 2 (http://gamasutra.com/view/news/187292/GDC_State_of_the_Industry_research_exposes_rise_of_indies_smartphone_games.php#.US9zc1dvBYg)

Pay attention to the Second Fact. Amount of Developers not associated with a publisher...low.

Great news. EA can be terribad but they have their moments. Lucas Arts was huge can of fail for last 15 years, EA needs to try hard to get on their level.

Hopefully, one day I'll get to play Dark Forces III.

But they need to go back to the roots and ignore new age Clone Wars bullshit and everything that comes with it.
