Spearman
(no shield / or shield if you choose)

Equipment:
War Spear or Ashwood Pike

Advantages:
Scare the shit out of cavalry, long reach against infantry, poke at people too busy blocking other people, fast moving

Disadvantages:
Weak against shielders (unless you have good footwork and blocking), not as powerful as two handers, ashwood pike has only 2 attack directions.

Armor: anything from heavier leather to medium grade chainmail is fitting

Build:
I have used this build for a while now, it's for level 30

STR 18
AGI 18

Power strike 6
Ironflesh 6 (might be overkill but I love it, have for 3 years)
Athletics 6
Shield OR Riding 5 (you can choose)
Weapon Master 6

144 Pole proficiency and 75 in any other category of your choice, or just go all pole. I find the 75 prof in 2h or 1h actually useful for close quarters, like inside of rooms where the spear might be blocked by objects or hit the walls.

I also have a "Way of the Spear" guide that can be found here:

Wow! I thank you so much... I want to hear much of such answers, would be great!
So again, I am really thankful... How do you think about a blunt shielder (e.g. Military Hammer)
I was thinking to go for this class because it might be very effective with a blunt weapon in melee especially against good armored --> You can knockdown them and then the finally hit :D

Blunt shielder is excellent. I play atm 15/21 with an iberian mace. Always laugh when you knockdown people. :D

IF    5
PS   5
ATH 7
SH   7
WM 5

I will help you with what I can, describing the different classes to you.  Perhaps some of the info will help you decide, seeing what appeals to you.

The first advice I give is to not choose one class, but make a few alts.  Play them all and see which ones you like.  If you like more than one, you can play any class you like.

Another option, if you wanted to stick with one class but you get bored, is to make a hybrid class.  This way you can do different play styles with one character.

That being said, here are my descriptions:

MELEE CLASSES
Melee is where the “action” is.  Weapons flailing, and bodies falling all around.  It’s the most popular aspect of the game, and the majority of players are some kind of melee character.

Two Handed:
Two Handed characters are very good at melee.  They have a good selection of weapons to choose from, and you can use a variety of builds and still be successful.  For example, you can have a faster character with a fast weapon, a balanced character, a slow character with a slow powerful/crushthrough weapon….what they all have in common is that 2h weapons use nice in-game animations useful for cutting swaths through the enemy.
A downside of Two Handed might be that you have to learn to manual block pretty well in order to be effective.  For newer players especially, taking on one opponent at a time can be a great challenge.
Some say that Two Handed characters are the best damage-dealing/dueling/Hero melee characters in the game.

Polearms:
Polearm characters can also be very good in melee.  They can be compared to Two Handed characters in many ways (good damage, 2-slot weapons mostly, need to manual block well) but they are a little different.  One advantage of polearms is the weapon selection is very varied.  You can take some king of poleaxe and play like a Two Handed character, wading into melee.  Or you can take a pike or long spear and play a support/anti-cav role.  Or you can take a shield and spear and play as a hoplite.
With polearms you also must learn to manual block well, or die.  Some polearms only have 2 attack directions, so its best to fight with your team if you’re using one of these.
Some say that Polearms are the most versatile class, and rival Two Handed characters in melee combat effectiveness.

One Hand/Shielder:
One Hand/Shield characters are invaluable on the battlefield.  They are typically very survivable, able to defend against multiple opponents.  They are also very useful for charging in to chokepoints or defending against ranged attacks.  One does not have to learn how to manual block at first, which allows even newer players to be effective on the field.  At the same time, taking on several opponents with skill allows experienced players to shine with this class as well.  Each damage type (slash/blunt/pierce/shield-breaker) is well represented in the One Handed weapons, with several great weapons to choose from of each type.
The greatest disadvantage of a one hand/shield character is the reduced range and damage of the weapons.  They are not as long or as damaging as 2h/pole weapons on average.  Another disadvantage is that many shielders, since they have a shield, never learn how to manual block and become sitting ducks once the shield breaks.  They also tend to be a bit slower than the other classes because of the shield weight.
Some may say that 1h/shield characters are the most durable and survivable characters.

RANGED CLASSES

Ranged characters can be a lot of fun to play.  Nailing a long shot is very rewarding, and head-shots are exceedingly lethal.  A good ranged character is a valuable asset to the team.

Archers have a good variety of bows and arrows to choose from, but only a few of those choices are viable on the battlefield.  They shoot fast, and are great for taking out horses and lighter armored infantry.  Bodkin arrows can be effective against heavier armor as well.

Crossbows shoot slower than bows, but the damage is much greater.  There are less varieties of ammo to choose from, but they all deal pierce damage…so they can seriously wound even armored targets.  They take a long time to reload.

Throwing weapons do a good amount of damage and have a fast rate of fire…but ammo and range are very limited.  They are a good choice for a hybrid or skirmishing character, though many players have made a full time profession out of hurling axes and lances.

CAVALRY CLASSES

You need to have a lot of money to play a cavalry class.  The upkeep for a horse can be quite costly.

Cav can be really fun though.  You can zoom around the battlefield and do a great amount of damage….however since you are moving so fast people can deal greater damage to you as well.  Cav can be very lethal, especially if the enemy is unaware of their approach.  Also, they can make great support characters, bumping and trampling  the enemy at the right moment that lets a teamie get the kill.

If you want to play a cav character, I recommend using a weapon type you like as a melee character.  One Handed Cav, Two Handed Cav, and Polearm Cav are all viable options.  Also, you will be de-horsed or dis-mounted often enough that you want to make sure you like the type of weapon you are using on foot as well as on horse.

The classes of mounted ranged: Horse Archer, Horse Crossbow, and Horse Thrower I am not too familiar with.  These I would recommend for a more advanced player.  Some call these the bane of C-RPG for their tendency to kite, run away, and delay the end of a round.  However, they can be as rewarding and as useful as any other class if played with skill.

So yeah.  I recommend alts and/or making a hybrid character.
Also, check the beginners guides section for builds and more detailed info.
Good luck!

Other players, feel free to correct or critique my summaries.  :)

Garison u  :mrgreen:beast  I think you spent much time to write this that's awesome ;) Only critism (however I have to write ) I play cRPG since a looooong time and I am good manual blocker i think:) But I am glad to have a better knownledge of all classes after your post^^. Donib I am really lucky that you are agreed with Blunt Shielder y  I think it's one of the best shielder arts at cRPG :)) So glad to hear such good answers! Maybe some others oculd post their favourite classes here amd maybe why they like these classes so much :)
A great thanks for now!

I was trying to be fair and unbiased in my assessment...but I think 1h/shield is one of the best ways to go.  Using a blunt or pierce weapon will ensure you are putting the hurt on other players.

If you want to be REALLY deadly, try the following technique:
Knock them down, hit them on the ground, then kick them as they are getting up, and then hit them over the head again.  Few can survive this. :)  DON'T TELL ANYONE!

You can do the following too. Knock them down, hit once, kick him in the arse, hit again.

Hmm I believe there is one more thing to be touched upon about classes. Some classes require a high individual skill and some require a good tactical play. Cav for instance, can be more about instincts compared to the other classes. You have to see an opportunity and finish the job quickly, or decide to not interfere if you sense it's a death trap. Overall I believe this gut instinct is nearly the same for all skirmisher classes. Those classes I believe offer a more tactical approach, and require more possibilites for you to outsmart your opponent. If you think this kind of a class will be your cup of tea, I'd highly suggest trying it for a gen at least. Cavalry (ranged cav too) and throwers fit into this skirmisher catagory I think.

Whereas this kind of tactical can be beneficial to all kind of classes, it is possible to depend on individual skill as an infantry most of the time. If you feel like self-centered skill suits you more, I'd suggest trying those classes. Many infantry fall to this catagory.

I also see support-infantry classes to be in the middle ground of these. Those classes are thrower, pikeman, hoplite and maulers as I can think of.

As for archer/crossbowman, I don't really know about these.

I hope this also helps :P

That's it, Ziath. I can't find a for me special class and the other problem is that I am doing well with every class. I'm lvl 25 arbalester at the moment since yesterday and i had already often scores like 20-4 or 12:1 and today I had with peasents armor just my Nordic Short War Sword 12-4.. That's the problem I think, that I do well with evry class.
And why did you say afelter all the YEARS??! :O

If you're talking about swashbucklin, then here's a post from me in another thread.
I'd recommend using thrust oriented swords. Without a shield, you'll be faster and can get better speed bonus. Which is an important thing for thrusts if you ask me. Long espada was my favourite. Side sword, italian sword, knightly arming sword, scottish sword are all viable options too depending on your preferences. All 1h swords have their use, and will be good but I'd recommend picking a long onehander. That way you can adapt yourself to the sitation better. Left swing, overhead swing and thrust would be useful for clusterfucks, left swing will be useful if the enemy is very close, right swing and thrust will be useful if you need to gain range. All in all, long espada is the best, knightly arming is the most balanced for this. 18/21 or 21/18 are both good for this kind of setup.

A good all around hybrid build is 21/15 cavalry with polearm/1h/shield (or just all polearm):

21/15
2 skills to atts

2 IF
7 PS
5 Shield
5 Athletics
5 Riding
5 WM

115 1h
110 polearm

Or if you don't want a shield/1h you could go:

24/15
8 skills to atts

8 PS
5 Athletics
5 Riding
5 WM

148 Polearms

You could also remove some WM for IF, but I would recommend against it.

The other "fun" hybrid build I'd recommend is some sort of thrower hybrid (like 2h/throwing or 1h/shield/throwing).  I'd also recommend something like 21/15 (Turbo's build) or 24/15  if you go 2h/throwing, for these builds.  Use this calculator to mess around with builds yourself:

Well, around 500 ingame hours ago, I loved being Lancer with a courser and a medium armor (ny upkeep was around 2.6-2.9k) it was great fun for me but I am archer level 20 at the moment now... it's not fun (18:10 build) but my mates said maybe I just have to level up to have more fun because archery is the opposizlte of fun without good accuary. The big problem at the moment is, that I dunno whatI should do now  :(
Title: Re: Class... can't find the best for me:(

Archery is pain on low levels. a lvl 20 twohander can pwn as nearly good as a lvl35 twohander, but a lvl 20 archer can pwn as good as a peasant. If you feel like you like archery, be patient and go for higher levels. Loomed bow + loomed arrows are also a must to be a good archer too. I'd suggest respeccing if you can't have those two.

How about agility lancer? With a 15/24 build, using a lance and an arabian warhorse (or a very heavily armored horse). With arab horse you'll be fast, manueverable yet deadly enough. With an armored horse, you'll be tanky, doing very good bump damage, yet reasonably fast and manueverable. Never tried this myself, but GK_Lars uses high riding and is actually doing very very good. Agility lancer is very good for 1v1 figthts, but require you to be aware of archers in a crowded battle (something you always should). I believe agility is the way to go for a lancer, as they benefit more from the speed bonus for better damage and benefit more from the manueverability as they have a limited attacking area.

Edit: 12/27 works too. Even for a Heavy lance user. It's difficulty is 11. Also good for Great lance too, it's difficulty is 11 as well.

Isn't lancer very expensive? Especially with an Arabian Warhorse and hmm medium armor. I don't want to have higher upkeep than 3k so less than 3k. Would you be able to teach me something like this in an "footclass guide";-) and sorry if I am asking to much different things. So any good hybrod combination or some special fun amd effective class?

Post by: Ronin on March 13, 2013, 09:35:58 pm
Oh, cavalry is an expensive class indeed. Forgot about you were asking an economical build.

I'd say hybrids would be a bit more expensive than specialists, as they tend to use more than 1 weapon type (more chance to break, and with less wpf even more chance to break). Ranged also has some extra repair costs, just because developers hate those classes. I'd say, go for a simplistic build. Something that will make you useful with economical equipment. Hmm Spearman (or pikeman) or offensive shielder are what coming to my mind.
As a spearman, wear medium armor and use a cost efficient spear to stop horses, stab people from behind etc. Bamboo spear, Long spear, war spear maybe.
As a shielder, wear light armor (maybe medium armor) and protect yourself with your shield. Get 5 shield skill minimum (and maybe optimum), grab a good 2 slot shield and... fight :D Use your high movement as an advantage.

Edit: You can try agiwhore-katana bitch build too. 15-24 is a viable build for a katana. You won't be vulnerable to arrows at all. It is easy to dodge arrows, or find a cover quickly; as you will be reasonably fast. Wear ninja armor for style. Ninja armors are not very heavy, so not very expensive. You'll be making loads of money with this build.

Haha I don't want to be a katana-Bitch!! :))
Hmm Cavalry should be good yes ofc some other friends told me too,-) I'm sorry and what armor as cavalry? I will start the lanorcer at lvl 15 :P and use till courser or someHORSE else jist light armor and stick so poelarm stick :-) but what equipment else to have less than 3k upkeep?:-l

Most cost efficient horse is said to be the rouncey. But steppe horse or desert horse might be good alternatives for being cost efficient too. If you're talking about max20 lvl server, your best option in rouncey or steppe horse probably. And the cheapest weapon you can use for that server. Cav is generally expensive, but this might be different with a rouncey. I remember I was making lots of money with champion destrier and other top tier equipment, it was x5 for half an hour though.

:D well I have ~450k now and I would play with stick (polearm) until I can use the Lance (normally1) and at lvl 15 I will go 3:18 build xD I will run around in peasents gear and this until lvl
20 or so then I can use a Lance but I dunno atm how much strenght is needed for the normally lance. My question now is, what armor should I use? I guess if I don't get something from Clan Armoury I will have around 420k after buying all the stuff... I guess too that I will make money with less than 3k upkeep. I would use a courser, Normally Lance, Maybe later Hafted Blade, Mail Guantles .. but what armour??

That depends on how often you'll get hit, compared to your horse. Most of the time when you are dehorsed near enemy infantry group, you're already dead. Extra protection doesn't offer much. I'd say, something to keep you alive as long as your horse is alive would be sufficient. I'd suggest buying an armor that protects your leg more than the others. Also wearing a good couple of boots might be good. I wear plate boots. Their cost is very low, but they protect me even better than my body armor.

By the way: loom horse before the weapon. Champion horses are the best looms.

Hmm okey:) I will try and I will search for a low cost good foot armor, but I will search for good armor too, do you know one? Well I think I will be able to find something which keeps my upkeep less than 3k (if i use my highest and best armor);-)

Sarranid armors are not bad for this. Skirmisher armor, sarranid padded vest, sarranid leather armor, Sarranid mail shirt, mamluke mail. They are fitting the kapıkulu theme too :P

As a dedicated lance cavalry build for 13 gens (retired once at 33 and back at level 32), when leveling I have gone for agility first (to about 15) before going strength and vice versa and I can say that you are way better off going for 12 strength (and then going for your full agility to ride your horse).  You can actually hurt people when you hit them, otherwise if you're riding your horse with 1 power strike you're not going to do much damage, and obviously you won't be doing damage to people while you're on foot.

You can't use many weapons with 1 ps too of course. Seriously with speed bonus, the lance hits do very very high damage. I mean, they do so much damage that they gain the damage loss completely.

Now, I think I got a direction. I think I like Mounted Classes most. I have a Great Mauler Alternate Charakter for melee now. Funny one ;). But I realized that HX and HA are great classes. But I don't have got some loomed items at the moment so I am asking myself which class  is good and effective (also for the team) without loomed items. And what's more fun? :)) Any Builds maybe and some things, why  HA or HX in Your opinion is.

Why HX. Any reasons? And why not HA? ;-)

HA sucks, especially without heirlooms. HX does reload faster, can have better stats, do more damage, and can have melee stats too. Nuff said I think.

What's fun at HX? And especially what's better than HA and what's funnier as HX than HA?

HX does a better job than a HA overall, and being stronger is always funnier I think. I already listed in what ways HX is better than a HA. HX is better at everything, but the reloading speed. And that hardly matters as HX has a better accuracy, you'll probably shoot more with a crossbow.

Rumblood says picking HA over HX is stupidity these days.

A third party can only offer you so much advice fredom, eventually you have to play around and see what you like the best. it's not our character, it is yours.
