Title: Axeplay - are you a fan?
Post by: Commodore_Axephante on February 18, 2013, 10:52:39 pm
1h, 2h, pole, throwing - all four have axes. Do you use them? If so, which are your favorites?

I want to hear from archers/xbow/throwers/hybrids/shielders, you name it. I'm curious about axe builds in general - which is the best axe for any particular build?

Go!

EDIT: Here's a list of the weapons I would consider an axe, in case anyone is somehow confused:

Pole Axes feel best, my fav weapons when playing pole... however I only made one generation as polearmer, prefer any other weapon class.

Throwing axes. Loved them in native, but always prefered and still prefer Javelins and Jarids over any other throwing stuff. I'm just used to them.
I like Axes style but usually I'm more into a weapon that is able to stab as well.

As an archer i would have to say the hatchet, its actually surprisingly good!

As a shielder, it has to be the Broad One Handed Axe, i absolutely love playing with that weapon, its a bit short but it makes up for it in damage and speed

As for 2H, the battle axe, its heavy, slow but deals tons of damage, i remember using it in strat and everyone was getting a high K/D with it, because it was such a strong weapon and was tearing the enemy apart!

Used the Iron battle axe (1h) a lot with a shield,

stats say it is slow but if you know how to feint well (1h axes are balanced) then that should not be a problem, also never had a problem with agility people.
Very good, deals great damage for a 1h weapon and capable of making short work of shields. It is also quiet heavy for a 1h weapon, dont know if weapon weight gives a bonus in combat, but in case you wondered, it has a weight value of 3.0.

Now i am back on maces again, just love knockdown

The damage buff on axes went a long way to help make them competitive with swords, but the buff to small/quick 2h swords was not needed whatsoever.  Just compare the numbers you'll see small 2h swords outnumber axes probably 10:1.

Dont know any fulltime axe user that doesnt heavily abuse hiltslashing and even fewer polearm axe users.

Makes zero sense that the 2h axes are unbalanced but the long axes & poleaxes that weight more and are longer ARENT?  Clearly not big fans of physics.

Well, the polearm animations go a long way toward making them look like they're being more reasonably handled than 2h axes... but I see what you mean.

Noob Q though - what is hitslashing? And, I'm a fulltime axe user... how do I abuse it too, please?

Axe is a proper man's weapon! Always loved animation of 2-h axes. My favorite and in heavy use is Persian battle axe. :)

Hitting someone with the first 1/3 of the length of a 2h/polearm weapon, the area around the hilt.  Good amount of the time you can be hit without an animation even being rendered.  You can also be hit thru blocks due to sloppy collision detection.  You'll have to ask someone better at 2h/dueling than me how to do it on command, usually happens when the person is on your side instead of in front.
Works for 2h & polearm, but try it with 1h and you will bounce unless its left swing.

CMP actually had some code for WSE to adjust sweet spots for longer weapons to STOP this and instead do light blunt damage (with a wooden shaft weapon) but thats prob been over a year ago and its vaporware now.

I love all axes equally. Be they throwing axes, poleaxe, hallberds, longaxes, bardiches, woodcutting axes, war axes, battle axes, hatchets, whatever. I love them. They all have a use in this game. Axes are badass.

I'm glad you axed this question.

I'm most familiar with 1h axes and I like the One handed battle axe, broad one handed battle axe, and hatchet.  Hatchet > hammer for a 0 slot weapon!

Hand Axe is 3 cut better and 6 speed faster than hatchet and still 0 slot. Axes are epic though I don't really like unbalanced weapons (2h axes).

I prefer spears of all types, weapons of the common people. I do sometimes use axes, all the one handers, my favorite being Hand Axe which I had +3 for awhile, are pretty good (esp the high damage/weight, slower and shorter Arabian/Sarranid ones), and am a fan of Long Axe, Long Voulge, Poleaxe for polearms. Heavy Throwing Axes are ridiculously OP for the investment required to use them (44 cut base for 4 PT investment, get the fuck out of here).

Oh...I think I meant the hand axe then

I like Crossbows and blunt weapons. I do have a +3 broad 1h battle axe cause it's awesome.

But because I'm often mounted axes and blunt weapons don't work(often) on HB, so I use swords a lot.

Used two handed axe a ot during strat v3, they are decent weapons, great for the price and very efficient for 2h cav.

All of my alts use axes as their primary. Also love throwing axes.

Yeah...

CMP actually had some code for WSE to adjust sweet spots for longer weapons to (...) instead do light blunt damage (with a wooden shaft weapon) but thats prob been over a year ago and its vaporware now.

The hybrid damage type (...) A long time  ago we discussed it for cRPG and iirc came to the conclusion that axes should have something in between of cut and pierce or cut and blunt. It was planned to implement it once the damage system gets reworked.

I dunno what the status is on that now. Maybe cmp still has it written on the old pizza boxes he uses as todo-lists. Other stuff is probably more important now. A quick-and-easy solution would be to give axes a flag that makes them use the arithmetic mean of cut and pierce soak/reduce armor parameters in damage calc. Might be a bit much with the recent axe damage buff though.

It seems CMP has his hands on everything I could ever hope for, in terms of axe changes. I truly think that if both of the above were implemented, axes would stand out so well / have such a unique niche that axeman would become its own sub-class, sort of like hoplite (being a subclass of shielder).

However as you can see, these things are apparently never going to happen.
Oh, and before anyone flames me, yes, the dream-change would involve a damage reduction to make up for the new armor parameters.

But, hell, at the end of the day, even if nothing changes, at least they look great.

EDIT: added ()'s around the ...'s that I added into the quotes. I'm pretty sure that's how you're supposed to do it, to show it's your own edit, not the original text. Been a while since I was a liberal arts student.

Great Long Bardiche, 'nuff said. Using without any changes since january 2012 iirc.

People may say its slow, people may say its unbalanced, people may say that 2h version deals way more damage...

People won't say stuff after they recieve the hit.  8-)

I love my 3+ Hand Axe and regular Long Bardiche, but those are the only 2 "axes" that I use outside of goofing around.

On my main Shield + Throwing Hybrid I use +3 Heavy Throwing Axes and a +3 Broad One Handed Battle Axe. Love the combo of the two, although it's not the most versatile..

You can simplify the "Siege server" part.

Yeah brother, put that shield on your back where it belongs and start LWAing like the sky is falling!

One Handed Battle Axe
Broad One Handed Battle Axe

Great sidearms for xbowing. If a shielder comes in you break it with one of these babies then run away and shoot  :D
So much for the theory... doesnt work that often but if it does I smile.

When I ran polearms I loved my +3 LWA. As 2h, I loved the idea of axes, but the fact that they were unbalanced killed them for me.
Now as a shielder, I don't use it, but I do quite enjoy the Broad One Handed Battle Axe. I also have a loomed Iron War Axe that I never use, but I may start carrying it just as a secondary to break shields.

Great Bardiche, manliest weapon imo. I love the sound of cracking shields and the feeling of heavy weight and power behind my swings!

I love the Hand Axe as sec weapon for archers.
Even making good damage with 0 PS - that's why I loomed mine to +3 :D

I have often used the Persian axe, great axe, battle axe .... etc  I think the best compromise is the great axe has a damage ratio speed excellent.

It pains me that my heavy throwing axes don't rest on my belt when not in use. Even better would be if all 3 were there and they disappeared as they were used - something that is possible to implement, but not at my level.

3 pages and no mention of the fighting axe?  Cheap, 32 cut, decent length for a 1h axe, and you can swing it 2h for lulz.

The first thing I loomed for my 2h alt which became my main character was a great axe so I've been using that since fall of 2010.  At that point you could carry a pike, 2h weapon and xbow at the same time so I'd stop a plated charger with the pike then run behind them to hack away with the great axe.

I used to do a 18/21 build then switched to 21/18 after strength builds became more common.  So I went for a combo of somewhat high agility with a high damage weapon that would be good for running up and hitting people in the back while they're fighting someone else.  I also like the great axe because I'm bad at dueling so have a better chance facehugging someone and circling them than standing back with a longer weapon where I'd have to trade hits and blocks more.
