Post by: Alexander_TheGreat_ on January 21, 2013, 11:58:09 am
21/01/13

Today i asked the devs why we didn't have a change log, people are curious, people wants to know whats getting changed around them, people are playing this mod, and people deserves to know the reality. So i joined IRC and asked the devs.

And here is the conversation:

If he said something like "We don`t have time atm because we focus on the new game" or  at least say the truth that they are lazy and cba to add new stuff,I wouldn`t mind so much, but trying to be a smartass,meh..

If increased memory usage is a problem (for some players) just remove some of the low level/unused/bad texture items. They are nice to have but not necessary. New items are more important. You don't have to add all of them. The armors made by Zimke and the other ones with good textures (most Teutonic stuff for example) are enough.

The worst thing would be to do nothing.

It's not so much the diversity in what can be bought in the inventory but the diversity of armors displayed in game that apparently can be a problem. So what a lot of crpg players have been clamoring for, more diversity of armors on the battlefield, is something that is inherently unworkable given the limitations of the engine.  Adding more viable and cool looking armors = +memory usage and problems for older comp users.
Or maybe the item team are just apathetic and lazy about crpg XD.

Unless we have someone buddy on the inside confirming that they are lazy we cant really be sure.  The thing that speaks against the increased memory usage tale is the fact that some stuff that had been requested like year ago does eventually get added.

I think u got quite a few BS troll answers just because of your attitude.

Don't be hatin, they don't get paid for what they do, plus the way you asked was not okay.
Ofc a patch is long overdue (Especially due to map-cycle which is horrible, at least on siege), but new armors should not be top of the list. I'd rather see some gameplay-changes.

You didn't invest anything, so you are probably right about that. You will get to see it when it's done. =)

"multiple people adding changes here and there"

Kinda scary to think someone can just decide to modify code whenever they feel like it and not put any sort of note down. Does each dev know what the other is doing whenever he changes code?

If i was making a mod in my spare time instead of playing games myself, i sure as hell would not sit and write out every little damn change i did.
Keeping a log on every action you do is really time and effort consuming. And why bother if you dont get paid?

Let them focus on the real work instead, and hurray for the devs may they code forever!

We use revision control, so we can see exactly what the changes are, who made them and when they were made.

When no one uses them, they don't hit performance that much. It's the variety of equipment during a battle that can bring some computers to their knees.

At least that's how I guess it works with load textures on demand activated.

It also is a huge difference depending on how the textures are made and how much vram they need when loaded in game.

Having a random dress which is probably on one textures that hosts another 5 parts of armor is way different from having a 2048x2048 textures for a single armor and adding 6 of those...

I don't mind people asking questions, making drama threads about it and just assuming stuff you have no idea about will probably not help getting real answers in the future though.

Can you please still tell us if we can expect new items/a patch in the near future? That would be really nice.  :)

Panos, how dare you petition for the removal of dresses! You don't see people wearing them anymore because our Great Leaders outlawed cross-dressing. Let this be a reminder to all of us that freedom is only an illusion maintained in front of our eyes by the devious devices of the dev team's dictatorship.

If we would simple create changelog out of commit notes, it would look like this (rageball only).
Starting with the newest change:
Code: [Select]
Message:
RAGEBALL: - changes to bouncing
----
Message:
RAGEBALL: -changes to nudge
----
Message:
RAGEBALL: - fix for natural curve
----
Message:
RAGEBALL: - added nudge stuff
----
Message:
RAGEBALL: -changes to curved throws
----
Message:
RAGEBALL: -changes to tackling
----
Message:
RAGEBALL: - more tackle stuff to break the game
----
Message:
RAGEBALL: -removed active catch while blocking with a shield
----
Message:
RAGEBALL: -changed to air friction and multi decay
----
Message:
RAGEBALL: -changes for "dreher" throw and tackling
----
Message:
RAGEBALL: -fix for tackling and increased header str
----
Message:
RAGEBALL: - added tackling
----
Message:
RAGEBALL: -removed always_emit flag from power kick particle effect
----
Message:
RAGEBALL: - reworked offcenter kicks
----
Message:
RAGEBALL: -slightly increased max kick distance (and thus power) to partly compensate for air friction
----
Message:
RAGEBALL: -deactivated autopickup during kicks
----
Message:
RAGEBALL: -nerfed power jump when carrying the ball

So pretty useless for most.

hmmm, well it doesn't look that useless, pretty good comments actually, there may not be alot of detail, but at least it tells one where to look and also if something got added or removed, so its kinda usefull  :P

Imagine if the other companies that make games were creating games for ppl who have old and shit PC. I bet that we would still play super mario in 2013.
If you can't play warband on low because of few armors you should seriously throw ur PC in trash can.

I live in country where is average salary is 350 euros, and i don't work. I saved money to buy some parts for my pc if i can buy parts well you can buy it too.
There are all cind of summer works. Being poor is just a excuse.

Well even if you make a low amount of money you still have some safety nets that allow you some expendable income that doesn't need to be spent on basic needs and bills.

+1. Its really not a "fuck you poor people" suggestion, its basically just logical thinking. If you have a shit pc, its really nobodies fault. Just dont play it if its not possible. Its not the matter of life and death. If it is, than you shouldnt be playin at all, you should be in a pillowed room near doctors.

I agree there is a diffrence between

"we want to keep our game requriments low so that big variety of PC config could join the fun"

and

"we will do whatever is needed to allow you to play on your Pentium 166MMX even if this involve not having a single new texture (becouse when you bought it it was awesome
), "

so its not about fuck you poor people. You can buy 4 years old graphic card for the prize of 4 beers. And Warband will go high !

Frankly - preparing good release notes with PROPER information is a difficult job to pull off every time a small update comes along. I perfectly understand that CBA part, that Ozin mentioned. In our company there are strict rules which help filter the exact important things out of task tracking system... but my oh my how many heads have to be bashed every month to have statuses/flags/notices put in there properly...   Such overhead would probably kill a volunteer project for sure. If not instantly - then slowly and painfully

So YAY for any highlights we get (from time to time) , but I'd say effort is much better spent on doing actual things, than reporting
