Title: What happened to this mod?
Post by: POOPHAMMER on December 24, 2012, 11:36:32 am
I used to be a real addict to this mod. I used to be able to play it for hours on end.

Any time I try to play it anymore, I can not play it for more than a few minutes, and I close out of it and I find browsing the internet to be more fun. Has anyone else felt this way about this mod? Or have I simply just outgrown it?

Not really, it recently got more fun once I learned about Strategus and its battles.

That happens when you have no life and all you wanna do is scam people from the marketplace.

For me I still love the melee combat gameplay, the teamwork to try to win rounds, and the single life gameplay. If you play to grind levels and get gold for new equipment that will burn you out or spoil the game eventually. Not saying anything bad about the levelling system..the persistence, marketplace, value in gear is a good part of the mod, but people should treat it as secondary to the actual gameplay.

If you do anything too much you will get burned out and bored tho, even if you still kind of like it. Just take a break before you're really sick of it, then you might miss it and come back. Or you break your addiction and never return.

The gameplay is just not something you can get elsewhere (except other M&B mods maybe). There is some crappy elements to the game, mostly a limitation in the design for ranged mechanics and the shear tactical advantage ranged brings. But its still a fun game.

Once you play a game too often over a long period of time, you are getting used to it, to all of the game mechanics and it feels the same every day.
The first day you started playing a game, the game feels amazing and new. That lasts for some time, probably even a year. During that time the game will always feel new and fucking amazing and makes you having a lot of fun.
That's btw applying for a lot of things in human life. Bought a new smartphone? Amazing thing heh? You like it, heh? Check it out after a few years. Oh god, how it sucked. The new smartphone is far better than the old.

That's also why most people love warband back in the beta or crpg in its first days. However the game today is far more better with all the new things like improved Strat, marketplace, upkeep system (!) and much more.

edit: Same applies to Archery in crpg. Im getting killed 2 out of 10 times by ranged. I hate being killed by range, I remember being killed by range. That's why I hate range and say, Im getting killed too often by ranged. Nerf them please.

Nothing wrong with Glaive
I haven't owned a MW Glaive for like 8 months
I don't use Glaive
If S key kills and wins rounds you're probably dense and should lose

No wonder people get sick of the mod when they play with there pure builds past lvl 33......  :P

Play another game instead. Skyrim or something similar will make you realise that while Warband melee system is bad, all the others are way worse thanks to the cancer called consolification. After some time this is usually motivation enough to play a bit cRPG again.

I think players are getting tired of the two main game modes, especially battle. We have two new gamemodes that are both ready for beta testing, but need some engine (wse2) fixes first, so we might have to wait a while for those.

As for battle, I'm not sure what can be done to improve it without ruining the mode. Feel free to post suggestions

Imo battle is actually perfect. In native I played only battle straight for nearly 2 years. At the same time I played crpg since release and mostly battle as well. Rounds aren't too long or too short with 6 and 1/2 minutes. Most times they are over after about 4 minutes so that is fine and even when dying during the first seconds, no one has to wait too long to play again.
Flags sometimes could spawn a bit earlier, but even that is fine now. Only thing I could think of, is changing map rotation more often to not play the same maps a hundred times a day. :)

Less night time would really improve battle experience and should be easy to do
Nerf ranged (this is facetious comment, what I really mean is there should be a limit to amount of ranged, increase depth of ranged combat, reduce ammo, or tweak builds that work with crossbows).

the fact is any other games offer the melee system that crpg/warband offers (chivalry apart , nice game but too arcadeish and fps oriented) , tried different games like this , Jedi academy was one i really enjoyed but it has empty servers now :( , i played rune , awesome game but now it's just spamming axes and pray to kill , played darkfall 1 , nice mmofps but it does not have parry system (apart the stupid parry that decrease damage) and mages are gay.
seriously , crpg is the only game i can play atm ; if darkfall had a melee combat like this , that will be the game of my dreams.

I feel the same. I thought when i get to gen 16 i will be happy and want to grind and make easily mw items, but i play it less and less so it takes me longer to reach lvl 31 when i am gen 16 then when i was gen 1.
Main problem is that everything is the same,i only have fun when i kick and tw other ppl in DTV and make them rage.  :P

The problem with cRPG is that after you tried M&B Warband, all games that are slightly similar to it will feel dull and unrewarding. Let's be honest, cRPG over the years basically became a balance fix for Native MP + some content (not saying the content or gamemodes are bad, but the core features that were part of cRPG in 2010 are all gone). Furthermore, it's normal people eventually grow bored of something they played for several years.

The combination of these two elements leads me to the conclusion that cRPG is a sort of gamer's curse. You can't play any other game because they are bad in comparison, but after some years you won't even be able to play cRPG due to boredom.

The mod gets stale for me if I play the same class over and over again. Mix it up man, try new tactics like only shotgunning people and using smoke bombs. that's what I'm doing and it's hilarious and dangerous at the same time! I get one chance, if I miss the shot I'm either dead or yelling ninja vanish as the smokebomb hits the ground and I run for my life....

Make it a bit crazier, as it use to be. Increase level cap so that diversity of builds increases, and bring back some fun weapons such as boulder on a stick and loony toon axe, no matter that they are unrealistic - so is everything else in this mod. Bring fun and crazy back to cRPG!!!
Title: Re: What happened to this mod?
Post by: Oberyn on December 24, 2012, 05:33:24 pm
Given the low variety of gamemodes we have to play I'd say it's actually somewhat miraculous that so many people play/ed this mod for so long. It's really a testament to how crappy other melee games are that we keep coming back to this one over and over. Strategus had and still has so much potential, that may be part of it, but I don't think a lot of crpg players are that much into Strat.
Like everyone else suggested, take a break from gaming in general. Also, I don't know if you ever donated any money (pretty sure you did actually) but think about how much time you've spent on this game compared to so-called AAA titles, or even native. Proportionally crpg would be worth at least 150 bucks or so to me.

Switch weapons, builds (non-gimmick), hybrid to do many different things in 1 round. My interest renewed when switching weapons around, and I am fortunate to be able to play at least 5 different classes with 1 character.

EDIT: And stop retiring/begin to retire, whatever choice you haven't been doing. Switch things up.

I don't know what it's like in EU, but in NA it already feels like upkeep has been removed.  You only need to sell a loom point once and you've set sail for level 33 with no issue.

Poopyhammer, I have the same problem.

And yes, browsing the internet is more entertaining.

Fine, the mod's getting old... (To you) Nobody really cares if you're here or not. It'll matter to people for about 3-10 days and then you'll just be another piece of cRPG history.

[NA]It's not just you.  Lately, when I try to play battle, I often become infuriated with the cavalry meta-game to the point of rage-quitting after a few rounds.  Siege rarely has more than 20-25 people these days and due to banner balance that is a substantially less than fun situation for the non-stacked team.  So I spend most of my MBW time on DTV and, well, that's a poor match to the fun of the battle/siege servers of the past.  Particularly when the bots walk or swing/shoot through each other constantly, inducing rage-quitting.[/NA]

I would like to see things improve and the game continue to live but I don't have any great ideas on how to fix the NA situation.  So I try not to complain; after all, it's not costing me anything.  (That's not a jab at anyone.  I just feel a little bad adding to this thread...but I would rather not see the NA half of this game die.)

EDIT: Being unable to enjoy even one melee fight because you're constantly being shot doesn't equate to a lot of fun either.

Well, it happens to everyone sooner or later. Nothing to be afraid of or feel sad about. Just do something else.

You've been playing what is essentially the same game for two years. You got bored.

Sometimes it takes me a few years to enjoy an old game again.  Most people only enjoy something for so long before repetition depletes the ability to enjoy it.  The rest are the small fraction of people who have 5,000 hours played because it never stops being fun.

Maybe you should donate all of your looms to those in need.
That would be fun.
Or, you could just leave this mod and give your looms away still :)

I was where you're at some months ago. Here is an idea, drop all clan/admin/whatever ties you got, then forget about the game for a while. Don't make yourself obliged to be on it for whatever reason. It will come back to you, eventually, for better or for worse

if you're bored just take a break, i got bored and didn't play for a couple months but i came back eventually. try a different build, get better at dueling, or if you're bored just...don't play.
