Title: Where did you learn about Mount & Blade?
Post by: Malak_Dawnfire on December 20, 2012, 05:57:43 pm
Just curious, as a newcomer it took some fancy Youtube videos to convert me into buying an older game.

Played the demo of the original Mount & Blade on steam, then i bought that after loving it for so long (about 8 months after release) only to find out a new one was being released (again through steam) and i have had it since release and played way way way too many hours

Played the game back before it had multiplayer. Or at least before I knew it had multiplayer. Probably... 5 years ago? I've only recently learned about c-rpg, and by recent, I mean within the last year or whenever it was that I joined. I've been hooked since.

I never really heard much about Mount & Blade before a few friends started playing it. They were really into NW and talked about it, kinda sad I didn't pick it up sooner because it's such a great game then you add in the multiple mods and it's worth every penny. Keep 'em comin guys!

I watched few youtube videos and tried to search a multiplayer mode where you can level up your character. The only reason why I didn't start earlier than I eventually did (over 1 and a half year ago) was cause I couldn't find the "Download" button... The website was still using the extremely early mode.

EDIT: this is how I discovered c-rpg

My friend saw it on steam and showed me it, i thought it looked pretty bad but i still downloaded it and loved it, when i later heard of warband being released with multiplayer in it i knew i had to get it since that was the only thing the game lacked imo.

Surprisingly, when I was looking for Warband mods to play I didn't immediately find anything I figured would be worth playing, then I googled for some and came across this. http://www.alteredgamer.com/mount-and-blade-warband/103115-the-top-5-best-warband-mods/

I thought that adding RPG aspects to multi-player would be lame but it turned out to be pretty cool.

That's where my first experience with combat similar to Mount&Blade came from, I played Half Life 2's AoC mod for a bit, eventually I tried luring friends to play it with me but said it was far clunkier than M&B. A decent mod but it was really let down by the Half Life 2 engine.

I played the original old Warband, when it was 1 year old. At first I tought it was a MMO, than I got curious, torrented it and after that ive been a massively dedicated fan of the series eversince.

The ammount of control the player has in combat simply stunned me and has been stunning me for quite some time now. Which is exactly something that I looked for quite some time. Frankly ive never been fan of anything ever and I never got diehardfans of something, but M&B.......its partially my life now. 8-)

Think the new Chivalry game will kill CRPG?

Total War is awesome. What age you like the most? Colonial age, Roman age, Japan, Medieval age. Heck, buy em all if you want. They all awesome.

NO, Chivalry will not kill Crpg. Thought so too at first, but no, not so much. We acctually thought at first that "War of the Roses" would kill it, but it was really not as good as most people expected. Some like it thou, but its really not a replacement for Crpg.

It is such a long time ago that I don't even remember where I first found out. I played the demo about 15 times when I decided it was time to buy it. I think it was 2007, it's been my main game ever since. I hopped a bit late on the cRPG train, because of the stupid name. Never really fancied finding out what it was cause I thought it was something really RPG-ish. If it would've had a proper name I would've been there during its infant stage, which was glorious. I am still mad about that, next time give it a proper name please.

My bro (Tommyhu) got me into the original M&B and into the Warband beta. He's also the one who got me into cRPG (took me months of prodding to finally cave and start playing, I always felt like the level gap between me starting out and the established players was too much to overcome to be competitive).  Glad I was partially wrong (there is a large learning curve compared to native and quite a large character stats gap to overcome)

Sadly I don't remember why I found out about the game.

I remember I did download the old beta demo from the talesworld site when you could only reach lvl 6.

Then buyed it after 2 weeks of non-stop arena fight!

This game was so fresh and no one beat it even today.  :)

PWMod is probably my favorite mod of all of Warband...it's just that all the servers that ran it were fucking terrible.  Either they wanted to force you into their version of role-play, which required you type every fucking thing you were doing.  For example you couldn't walk in and start robbing a castle's coffers, you had to type something like "Looks suspiciously at the coffers" and then stand there for 5 minutes to give them time to respond.

Or they had terrible rules for faction combat, as in "You must declare war in person, give them 5 minutes to prepare, once you die the war is over" etc.

I can see those rule sets if the game you're playing is a MUD (text based game) from 1985, but it's 2012 (was 2011) and we're playing a graphical game where you can see someone's actions.  If someone pulls out a weapon on you in real life, you're going to take it as a threat, so I consider someone pulling out a weapon on me and me responding (without ever typing) to be role playing...If someone's aiming a loaded crossbow at you, it's a pretty clear sign that they're threatening you.  And if you don't respond appropriately, you may die (or you may take your chances and try to kill them).

If you have guards posted on your bridge to your castle and some guy runs by ignoring your commands to stop, he's clearly a threat and can be dealt with appropriately.  But the admins would get in a tizzy if you warned him to stop and he ran off if you didn't type "I will kill you if you ignore me again" (which is pretty hard to do in a laggy server with the guy running full speed away from you)

I agreed with the rules about randoming, but role play (in graphical video games) is a hell of a lot more than typing your actions.

Such a shame, because it's a very very good mod (and the modder even said he didn't like that the only servers running it were role play servers, it was meant more as a "faction vs faction vs faction vs faction" game where you're vying for control of the castles, resources, and cities.

I have just about no idea how I learnt about the original M&B. All I still know is that I thought the campaign map would be the whole game like some kinda medieval port royal or patricians.
As soon as I entered real time combat though I knew I had to get this game (I pirated it).
I legally bought warband as soon as it came out to redeem myself.

Im not sure what year, but before warband came out.

I was not that interested in the fighting,I stayed on my horse with a bow. And sent my Swadian knights to mop up everything. :)
Loved running around with my caravan and trade. Viritual gold!!!

I was in a shogun total war 2 clan when it first came out called 7 Samourai, we where the best clan in all of shogun 2 (I had like a 4:1 or 3.5:1 or so win to loss ratio in one on ones and i dindt plug pull, and we were first non mega clan to win the tier 1 map). Anyways one of our best players, some guy (an adult) who literally plays video games 12 hours a day started playing mount and blade warband. I sometimes when on his steam channel to see what he was playing to find a good new game. Saw a screen shot of M&B and it looked cool and i saw it was only 10 dollars so i bought it. Guys name was Hazed if he plays CRPG.

I also found a strange coincidence with this. As many of you know i was in Hospitaller for a long time, when looking at other Hospitallers steam pages i found that quite a few of them where also in 7 Samarui, which had at most 100 peole in it at any one point so its not like it was a huge clan by any means (some clans had several hundred or even a few thousnad people in them). So yah strange coincidence i stop playing one game to play another and the clan i join is unknowingly made up of several people who where in my shogun clan.

Like some others, I found this game when it was in Beta. I vitnessed my friend playing it on a computer. I was also stunned by the sheer atmosphere and the control you had over your character, and the fact that the bots were very much like you. No other game has taken my time and given me enjoyment like the M&B series, I've been playing it over and over in SP. This is the only game I've been consistently playing MP, joined competitive play, joined a clan etc. I've never before engaged myself so much in one game. Taleworlds was talking about making M&B multiplayer, but it took so long that at some point I stopped believing there would ever be a multiplayer.
,
I joined in version 0.600 -something, back when Khergits were a special type of steppe bandits, Dark Knights still existed, nothing but Swadians and Vaegirs and there were no sieges.

Basically was a big fan of melee heavy games even before the Mount&Blade series. Played Jedi Outcast before (even competitively) since it's release in 2002 or something, which was an awesome game and I would probably still be at it if the playerbase didn't start falling apart due to new game releases (RIP JK:JO, cry evry time ;_;).
So after the player base of JO was really low and all the cool old school players left, I started googling and asking on forums for other melee heavy games. Someone suggested Mount&Blade, I tried it, loved it but it lacked multiplayer. Then after some time Warband (yay MP) was announced, I jizzed, bought and been playing since the beta.

My good rl friend which i know for like 20, 21 years now? told me about this. He and few of his friends were playing native and then found out about cRPG. In the time i let them convince me to buy the game they were like 5 guys playing.

The guy that brought me into cRPG ocassionally plays as Deserter_Drubezator. When he was regular player, he was really, really good. I miss the days.

But still, my friend got me into this shithole which i cannot leave for almost 2 years now.

(and yeah, cRPG is the ONLY thing i keep playing consistently over last two years)

Yeah, I had first played M&B back when it was a beta (~7-8 years ago?  ) and there was Zendar and the Vaegirs and Swadians with one castle each or something. All I really remember is looters and black knights.

Years ago I was trying to think of a way to stay out of the bars and started some stupid free mmorpg.  I eventually got quite involved, but the game fell apart and I needed a new fix.  Unfortunately I just could not handle the grind all over again, and I hoped there might be a skill based game out there.  I found 'Darkfall' which was not released yet, but it compared its combat to 'Mount&Blade'.  I tried the trial version, but after getting my ass kicked by looters (being too used to simple point and click games) I said forget it, too hard.  Then I got drunk and bought the beta version since it was so cheap, and eventually learned to play.  Still can't block tho:(

Played demo for original M&B, loved it. Pirated it, mainly because I could barely run it on my old crap comp. Would have to use the cheat to kill enemies at start of battle to make sure there wasn't more then 30 people on screen at once or I'd stutter too hard haha.

Fast forward two years, got a gaming comp, planned on playing all the pretty new games, ended up reading an article about the best mods for Warband, saw C-RPG, loved the concept, bought warband, almost two years later here we are. Who knew when I built this beast gaming rig I'd be spending 3/4's of my time playing a game like this.

I found original M&B years ago, by the time it was amazing and original stuff, and great mods gloomed on every horizon. I guess it was pirated version tho... But i had to buy Warband for multiplayer when it came out and after that i was forever bound to this lame piece of entertainment...
