SpaceEngine - a free space simulation program that lets you explore the universe in three dimensions, from planet Earth to the most distant galaxies. Areas of the known universe are represented using actual astronomical data, while regions uncharted by astronomy are generated procedurally. Millions of galaxies, trillions of stars, countless planets - all available for exploration. You can land any planet, moon or asteroid and watch alien landscapes and celestial phenomena. You can even pilot starships and atmospheric shuttles.

It's not a game, it's a... thing...

A beautiful thing.

A picture I just took of an orange giant from an orbiting planet.

Thanks a lot for sharing Leshma :)

EDIT: Another picture. Taken at the edge of the Andromeda galaxy.

You can see the Milky Way above and slightly to the left of the sun.

Should be renamed Lens Flare Simulator 2013

Beautiful images nonetheless  :)

Yeah. The Lens Flare is a little strong, but I haven't even checked the graphics options yet. Was too eager to fly around

Here's two more pictures :)

This is taken from the dark side of a planet. It shows a giant ringed crescent moon. The planet is what casts the shadow.

Battlefield franchise took that already, sorry.

In BF3 you have the additional details of pretty much everything you can think of. The amount of different subtle visual effects running on your screen in that game is quite daunting. In a space explorer, lens flare is the only thing you see.

Kafein, you should really try this.

Warp effect is pretty neat.

I've downloaded 3gb earth textures, going there as we speak :)

I know!

This is taken at the edge of the universe looking at the center of the star cluster/galaxy. Notice how the stars just end to the left of the planet. There's nothing there.

It would be hilarious if they added an Easter egg somewhere.

I know it's not a video game, but still.

I set speed at max (100 gigaparsec/s) and few seconds later I ended up in unobservable part of the universe (nothingness)...

Russian dude who made this is an astronomer. He learned programming on his own few years ago so he could start working on this engine. He keeps improving it, in next version he will support more than one texture per object (will make spacecrafts prettier).

Also, here's the picture of our planet:

Khorin, do you know where I can find a black hole?

Also, have you downloaded those modded textures?

Really nice pictures btw :)

If you press F6 you should see a list of locations where you can save locations you've been to and such, but there are also a few recommended spots. One of them is a black hole. If you're in a star system and press F2 you can see the black hole in the system and target it if you're having trouble finding it.

And, no. Only thing I've downloaded is 0.96 and the 0.96.2 patch. Although, I've been thinking of doing it. It has a surprisingly active modding community. Especially this:

Couldn't find a thread, only mentions, and this little gem certainly deserves its own thread now with the recent release (0.9.7.1).
