Title: Shield on back
Post by: Keltesh on April 13, 2011, 11:50:30 pm
So I've heard that having a shield on your back reduces ranged damage by 50% if you get hit in the back.

Does this also apply to melee hits to the back?

And does this work with all shields?

I'm wondering because if this is true my full str 2 hander could run around with an arena shield strapped to the back of his plate armor and be practically immune to ranged back hits.

first off you go a lot slower with shield on back
it was never a question of damage reduction, shields blocked arrows entirely. but crpg disabled it.
its only useful if u have a few 'pos' shields that breaks in ~5 hits, but even then the time spent switching will result in being dropt

I don't think it reduces damage. But it can have advantages. Just look at this guy. But look very closely.

(I still shot him though. You landlubbers don't fool an old scallywag.)

<@cmpxchg8b> they add (shield_armor + 10) to your armor

This is against ranged only, though.

I am stumped.

Hrrm, I may have to test the 10 armor thing with an archer friend of mine.  Seems that it would armor to the whole body in that case.

No, only the area covered by the shield. Plate armor + a steel shield would make your back pretty much invincible to ranged in this case, i guess.

But wouldn't even a arena shield do the trick then in this case? What would be the point of having the steel shield?

Arena shield has next to no shield armor. Steel shield has lots of it.

After he figured out he couldn't climb into my boat he walked backwards with raised shield. When I looked away for a second he put his shield on his back and turned around. Deception is also an armor.

Oh I'm retarded, I read that as shield_armor of 10 not the shield's armor + 10.

Tested this extensively this morning with Punisher and Astinus. It works, but it's not worth it. Also the shield forcefield on back seems sometimes quite random.

I was thinking of throwing a hide shield (12 armor) on my back when using full black plate and a full str build.  Is it just because of the move speed reduction that you think its not worth it?  Or does it just not block arrows most of the time?

Still haveing like 98 armor on my back sounds nice.

It block arrows quite often but it seems to be linked to your shield skill. So unless you have 5-6 shield skill to get the forcefield effect it's pretty useless.

Well maybe 2 shield skill with a board shield then.

I WILL find a way to abuse this discovery to annoy ranged users.

Oddly enough, I usually shoot people from the front, and only cav in the back.

And when I finally perfect my secret art of backwards fighting with my spamberge and only present my armored turtle shell back with black plate underneath, what then?  WHAT THEN?!?!?

Board shield is very bad for this, even with 6 shield skill a lot of shots went through because of it's sideways position when placed on back.

This is a goal of mine, want to help me practice on the duel server sometime?

I have surprised a couple of people with backwards overheads and sidways swings, hardest part is that you can't turn while using the camera to look behind yourself.  I wonder if I can bind turning to the keyboard......how did I not think of this sooner?

Foiled again, damn your science and testing!

Really though, thanks for testing this.  Guess I'll have to make a character to do this with steel/lolscarl.

On the NA server I might be a moderate challenge, but on any others my ping may make me a menace to myself in a duel server if I go melee. I could always do this though if you are interested.

I play NA, so may hit you up sometime, posting all this from work on my phone, so won't be on for a few hours still.

So, does this shield armor+10 apply to ranged only? Or does it include melee?

Also, can you put bucklers on your back?

It applies to range as well, not just melee. Trust me, I have tested this on unwilling CHAOS (back then RS) members many times in the past over Team Speak.

As for bucklers, I don't think I have ever seen anyone put that on their back... I assume you can though since every shield has that ability.

It only applies to projectiles to my knowledge, tears.
99% sure it does not apply to melee.

So no backpedaling around with 140+ armor and being totally impervious to melee attacks?
